Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense of one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light. The views of individual intellectuals have spanned the spectrum, but the views of intellectuals as a whole have tended to cluster. Indeed, these views have clustered at one end of the spectrum in the early twentieth century and then clustered at the opposite end of the spectrum in the late twentieth century. Moreover, these radically different views of race in these two eras were held by intellectuals whose views on other issues were very similar in both eras. Intellectuals and Race is not, however, a book about history, even though it has much historical evidence, as well as demographic, geographic, economic and statistical evidence-- all of it directed toward testing the underlying assumptions about race that have prevailed at times among intellectuals in general, and especially intellectuals at the highest levels. Nor is this simply a theoretical exercise. The impact of intellectuals' ideas and crusades on the larger society, both past and present, is the ultimate concern. These ideas and crusades have ranged widely from racial theories of intelligence to eugenics to "social justice" and multiculturalism. In addition to in-depth examinations of these and other issues, Intellectuals and Race explores the incentives, the visions and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups, but for societies as a whole.

Whether the straight-shooting hero from a John Wayne movie or the lawless gunslinger spreading mayhem, the cowboy lassos the imagination and just won’t let go. On these magnificently illustrated pages unfold cowboy life and legend, cowboys around the world, the cowboy’s ranching roots, modern-day cowboys, cowboy food and fun, and the cowboy in film and popular culture. Quotations from Western poems, songs, and novels offer contemporary perspectives, as do the old-time posters and nostalgic advertisements. An astounding variety of photos show it all. There’s also absorbing background on black cowboys, vaqueros, women who rode the range, and rodeos. Known as the "Cowboy Professor,” Richard W. Slatta, Ph.D, has earned numerous honors and awards. The International Who’s Who of Intellectuals lists him as one of the Outstanding Writers of the 20th Century as well as one of the Outstanding Intellectuals of the Twentieth Century. The American Library Association gave an "Outstanding Reference" award to his book, The Cowboy Encyclopedia. Slatta’s Cowboys of the Americas received the Western Heritage Award for Nonfiction Literature, National Cowboy Hall of Fame. His many books include Simn Bolvar's Quest for Glory, co-authored with Jane Lucas De Grummond; The Mythical West: An Encyclopedia of Legend, Lore and Popular Culture; and Comparing Cowboys and Frontiers.

Book excerpt: The Intellectual Property Review, edited by Dominick A Conde of Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto, covers 30 jurisdictions with leading practitioners explaining the opportunities for intellectual property protection in their respective region, plus significant recent developments and the unique aspects of each country. It is not an overstatement to say that essentially all business is global, and the protection of intellectual property is the lifeblood of all business. The scope and implementation of that protection, however, varies from country to country. It is therefore incumbent for both clients and their lawyers, to be conversant with the individual practices, laws, rules and procedures, in each of the economically significant countries. The goal of this review is to provide that guidance. Contributors include: Stanislas Roux-Vaillard, Hogan Lovells LLP; Felix Roediger, Bird & Bird LLP; and Tommaso Faelli, BonelliErede

Book excerpt: In developing countries, the extent to which intellectuals disengage themselves in state activities has widespread consequences for the social, political, and economic development of those societies. Roderic Camps’ examination of intellectuals in Mexico is the first study of a Latin American country to detail the structure of intellectual life, rather than merely considering intellectual ideas. Camp has used original sources, including extensive interviews, to provide new data about the evolution of leading Mexican intellectuals and their relationship to politics and politicians since 1920.

This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying the optimal price for a transaction involving an intellectual property (IP) asset necessarily involves a thorough, well-reasoned, and well-supported IP valuation analysis. This matchless book draws on decades of experience from the world’s most renowned IP valuation experts, patent office chief economists, finance and accounting professors, and top-tier legal professionals to provide clear guidance and immediately actionable knowledge on how to value IP assets in a multitude of scenarios. The contributors explore all major facets of IP valuation, ranging from the basics of value to technical economic methods in an approachable manner. The book examines the valuation of brands, copyright, trade secrets, patents, and other forms of IP from a multidisciplinary viewpoint with worked examples, draft contract language, case law analysis, and up-to-date theoretical considerations. Issues and topics considered in depth include the following: fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms; determining reasonable royalty rates; standard essential patents; profit apportionment; discount rates; role of the IP asset manager and multi-functional teams; IP management in collaborative research and development; financial methods and economic considerations; and operationalization of IP valuation in practice. The handbook is the result of five years of dedication and hard work by the advisors and a growing network of researchers, supporters, and end-users involved in the Asia-Pacific Research and Training Network on Trade. As IP becomes ever more indispensable in so many activities and industries that cross national borders, the need to overcome the lack of shared understanding of how to approach the valuation of IP becomes more urgent. This book will facilitate consistent approaches to the valuation of IP as an indispensable component of trade, investment, and sustainable economic development. It will provide IP asset managers and transactional attorneys, both seasoned experts and newcomers, with up-to-date methods on how to value IP assets and apply them in practice.
