Book Synopsis Allende’s Chile and the Inter-American Cold War by : Tanya Harmer
Download or read book Allende’s Chile and the Inter-American Cold War written by Tanya Harmer and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fidel Castro described Salvador Allende's democratic election as president of Chile in 1970 as the most important revolutionary triumph in Latin America after the Cuban revolution. Yet celebrations were short lived. In Washington, the Nixon administration vowed to destroy Allende's left-wing government while Chilean opposition forces mobilized against him. The result was a battle for Chile that ended in 1973 with a right-wing military coup and a brutal dictatorship lasting nearly twenty years. Tanya Harmer argues that this battle was part of a dynamic inter-American Cold War struggle to determine Latin America's future, shaped more by the contest between Cuba, Chile, the United States, and Brazil than by a conflict between Moscow and Washington. Drawing on firsthand interviews and recently declassified documents from archives in North America, Europe, and South America--including Chile's Foreign Ministry Archive--Harmer provides the most comprehensive account to date of Cuban involvement in Latin America in the early 1970s, Chilean foreign relations during Allende's presidency, Brazil's support for counterrevolution in the Southern Cone, and the Nixon administration's Latin American policies. The Cold War in the Americas, Harmer reveals, is best understood as a multidimensional struggle, involving peoples and ideas from across the hemisphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of the adoption of the American Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Man in 1948, there was little indication that the Declaration would ultimately yield a highly institutionalized system comprised of a quasi-judicial Inter-American Commission and an authoritative Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Today, however, the Inter-American Human Rights System (IAHRS) has emerged as a central actor in the global human rights regime. This comprehensive volume explores the institutional changes and transformations that the IAHRS has undergone since its creation, offering contributions and insights from a variety of disciplines including history, law, and political science. The book shows how institutional change has affected and been affected by the System’s normative leanings, rules of procedure and institutional design, as well as by the position of the IAHRS within the broader landscape of the Americas. The authors examine institutional change from a variety of angles, including the process of change in historical context, normative and legal developments, and the dynamic relationship between the IAHRS and other regional and international human rights institutions. This book was originally published as a special issue of The International Journal of Human Rights.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This edited volume brings together both established and emerging human rights scholars and practitioners to discuss the central challenges in the areas of LGBT rights, torture and indigenous rights in the Americas. The theoretical and empirical contributions in this edited book are based on the most recent cases decided by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights against the Chilean state, namely; (a) Case of Atala Riffo and daughters v. Chile, (b) Case of Garcia Lucero et al. v. Chile, and (c) Case of Norín Catriman et al. (Leaders, members and activist of the Mapuche Indigenous People) v. Chile. Using different methodological approaches such as case studies, legal analysis and cross-national approaches, the authors go beyond the description of these three cases and reflect on the importance of the IAHRS, its increasing developments and the improvement that it has had in the region"--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis 21st Century Democracy Promotion in the Americas by : Jorge Heine
Download or read book 21st Century Democracy Promotion in the Americas written by Jorge Heine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the promotion and defense of democracy in the Americas. Taking the Inter-American Democratic Charter (IADC) of 2001 as a baseline, it charts the evolution of the issue over the past decade. Although it considers historical antecedents, the main focus of the book is on key instances of promotion and defense of democracy in the Western hemisphere since the adoption of the IADC. It analyzes democratic norms, norm enforcement mechanisms and how they work in practice. Special attention is paid to the 2009 Honduras coup, the issues raised by it and the debates that surrounded it, as this was the first instance in which a member state was suspended in accordance with the IADC. Three central themes guide the analysis: the nature of challenges to democracy in Latin America; the role of regional organizations as democracy promoters; and the transformation of Inter-American relations. The book unveils the key achievements and limitations of the OAS in the field and will be of great interest to students and scholars of democratization, US-Latin American relations, international relations of Latin-America and international organizations.
