This book was released on 1998 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phase space of the spatial three-body problem is an open subset in R18. Holding the ten classical integrals of energu, center of mass, linear and angular momentum fixed defines an eight dimensional manifold. For fixed nonzero angular momentum, the topology of this manifold depends only on the energy. This volume computes the homology of this manifold for all energy values. This table of homology shows that for negative energy, the integral manifolds undergo seven bifurcations. Four of these are the well-known bifurcations due to central configurations, and three are due to "critical points at infinity". This disproves Birkhoffs conjecture that the bifurcations occur only at central configurations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book serves as an introduction to holomorphic curves in symplectic manifolds, focusing on the case of four-dimensional symplectizations and symplectic cobordisms, and their applications to celestial mechanics. The authors study the restricted three-body problem using recent techniques coming from the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves. The book starts with an introduction to relevant topics in symplectic topology and Hamiltonian dynamics before introducing some well-known systems from celestial mechanics, such as the Kepler problem and the restricted three-body problem. After an overview of different regularizations of these systems, the book continues with a discussion of periodic orbits and global surfaces of section for these and more general systems. The second half of the book is primarily dedicated to developing the theory of holomorphic curves - specifically the theory of fast finite energy planes - to elucidate the proofs of the existence results for global surfaces of section stated earlier. The book closes with a chapter summarizing the results of some numerical experiments related to finding periodic orbits and global surfaces of sections in the restricted three-body problem. This book is also part of the Virtual Series on Symplectic Geometry http://www.springer.com/series/16019

This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition text provides expanded material on the restricted three body problem and celestial mechanics. With each chapter containing new content, readers are provided with new material on reduction, orbifolds, and the regularization of the Kepler problem, all of which are provided with applications. The previous editions grew out of graduate level courses in mathematics, engineering, and physics given at several different universities. The courses took students who had some background in differential equations and lead them through a systematic grounding in the theory of Hamiltonian mechanics from a dynamical systems point of view. This text provides a mathematical structure of celestial mechanics ideal for beginners, and will be useful to graduate students and researchers alike. Reviews of the second edition: "The primary subject here is the basic theory of Hamiltonian differential equations studied from the perspective of differential dynamical systems. The N-body problem is used as the primary example of a Hamiltonian system, a touchstone for the theory as the authors develop it. This book is intended to support a first course at the graduate level for mathematics and engineering students. ... It is a well-organized and accessible introduction to the subject ... . This is an attractive book ... ." (William J. Satzer, The Mathematical Association of America, March, 2009) “The second edition of this text infuses new mathematical substance and relevance into an already modern classic ... and is sure to excite future generations of readers. ... This outstanding book can be used not only as an introductory course at the graduate level in mathematics, but also as course material for engineering graduate students. ... it is an elegant and invaluable reference for mathematicians and scientists with an interest in classical and celestial mechanics, astrodynamics, physics, biology, and related fields.” (Marian Gidea, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2010 d)

Book excerpt: This book considers global solutions to the restricted three-body problem from a geometric point of view. The authors seek dynamical channels in the phase space which wind around the planets and moons and naturally connect them. These low energy passageways could slash the amount of fuel spacecraft need to explore and develop our solar system. In order to effectively exploit these passageways, the book addresses the global transport. It goes beyond the traditional scope of libration point mission design, developing tools for the design of trajectories which take full advantage of natural three or more body dynamics, thereby saving precious fuel and gaining flexibility in mission planning. This is the key for the development of some NASA mission trajectories, such as low energy libration point orbit missions (e.g., the sample return Genesis Discovery Mission), low energy lunar missions and low energy tours of outer planet moon systems, such as a mission to tour and explore in detail the icy moons of Jupiter. This book can serve as a valuable resource for graduate students and advanced undergraduates in applied mathematics and aerospace engineering, as well as a manual for practitioners who work on libration point and deep space missions in industry and at government laboratories. the authors include a wealth of background material, but also bring the reader up to a portion of the research frontier.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the author examines the following: When the Hamiltonian system $m i \ddot{q} i + (\partial V/\partial q i) (t,q) =0$ with periodicity condition $q(t+T) = q(t),\; \forall t \in \germ R$ (where $q {i} \in \germ R{\ell}$, $\ell \ge 3$, $1 \le i \le n$, $q = (q {1},...,q {n})$ and $V = \sum V {ij}(t,q {i}-q {j})$ with $V {ij}(t,\xi)$ $T$-periodic in $t$ and singular in $\xi$ at $\xi = 0$) is posed as a variational problem, the corresponding functional does not satisfy the Palais-Smale condition and this leads to the notion of critical points at infinity. This volume is a study of these critical points at infinity and of the topology of their stable and unstable manifolds. The potential considered here satisfies the strong force hypothesis which eliminates collision orbits. The details are given for 4-body type problems then generalized to n-body type problems.

Book excerpt: The invariant integrals of spherical functions over certain infinite families of unipotent orbits in symplectic groups over a p-adic field of characteristic zero are explicitly calculated. Book excerpt: Exceptional complex Lie groups have become increasingly important in various fields of mathematics and physics. As a result, there has been interest in expanding the representation theory of finite groups to include embeddings into the exceptional Lie groups. Cohen, Griess, Lisser, Ryba, Serre and Wales have pioneered this area, classifying the finite simple and quasisimple subgroups that embed in the exceptional complex Lie groups. This work contains the first major results concerning conjugacy classes of embeddings of finite subgroups of an exceptional complex Lie group in which there are large numbers of classes. The approach developed in this work is character theoretic, taking advantage of the classical subgroups of Eg(C). The machinery used is relatively elementary and has been used by the author and others to solve other conjugacy problems. The results presented here are very explicity. Each known conjugacy class if listed by its fusion pattern with an explicit character afforded by an embedding in that class.

Book excerpt: This volume studies the behaviour of a random heat kernel associated with a stochastic partial differential equation, and gives short-time expansion of this heat kernel. The author finds that the dominant exponential term is classical and depends only on the Riemannian distance function. The second exponential term is a work term and also has classical meaning. There is also a third non-negligible exponential term which blows up. The author finds an expression for this third exponential term which involves a random translation of the index form and the equations of Jacobi fields. In the process, he develops a method to approximate the heat kernel to any arbitrary degree of precision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental property of compact spaces - that continuous functions defined on compact spaces are bounded - served as a motivation for E. Hewitt to introduce the notion of a pseudocompact space. The class of pseudocompact spaces proved to be of fundamental importance in set-theoretic topology and its applications. This clear and self-contained exposition offers a comprehensive treatment of the question, When does a group admit an introduction of a pseudocompact Hausdorff topology that makes group operations continuous? Equivalently, what is the algebraic structure of a pseudocompact Hausdorff group? The authors have adopted a unifying approach that covers all known results and leads to new ones, Results in the book are free of any additional set-theoretic assumptions.
