Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the many functions of paper in the fine art and aesthetics of the early twentieth-century modernist or historic avant-garde (Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Constructivism and many more). With its many collages and photomontages, the historic avant-garde is generally considered to have transformed paper from a mere support into an artistic medium and to have assisted in art on paper gaining a firm autonomy. Bringing together an international team of scholars, this book shows that the story of paper in the avant-garde has thereby hardly been told. The first section looks at a selection of canonized individual avant-gardists’ work on paper to demonstrate that the material and formal analysis of paper in the avant-garde’s artistic production still holds much in store. In the second section, chapters zoom in on forms and formats of collective artistic production that deployed paper to move around reproductions of fine art works, to facilitate the dialogue between avant-gardists, to better promote their work among patrons, and to make their work available to a wider audience. Chapters in the third section lay bare how certain groups within the avant-garde began to massively create monochrome works, because these could be easily reproduced when transferred to, or reproduced as, linocuts. In the last section of the book, chapters explore how the avant-garde’s attentiveness to paper almost always also implied a critique of the ways in which paper, and all that it stood for, was treated and labored in European culture and society more broadly. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, modernism, and design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates Michael Stonebraker's accomplishments that led to his 2014 ACM A.M. Turing Award "for fundamental contributions to the concepts and practices underlying modern database systems." The book describes, for the broad computing community, the unique nature, significance, and impact of Mike's achievements in advancing modern database systems over more than forty years. Today, data is considered the world's most valuable resource, whether it is in the tens of millions of databases used to manage the world's businesses and governments, in the billions of databases in our smartphones and watches, or residing elsewhere, as yet unmanaged, awaiting the elusive next generation of database systems. Every one of the millions or billions of databases includes features that are celebrated by the 2014 Turing Award and are described in this book. Why should I care about databases? What is a database? What is data management? What is a database management system (DBMS)? These are just some of the questions that this book answers, in describing the development of data management through the achievements of Mike Stonebraker and his over 200 collaborators. In reading the stories in this book, you will discover core data management concepts that were developed over the two greatest eras (so far) of data management technology. The book is a collection of 36 stories written by Mike and 38 of his collaborators: 23 world-leading database researchers, 11 world-class systems engineers, and 4 business partners. If you are an aspiring researcher, engineer, or entrepreneur you might read these stories to find these turning points as practice to tilt at your own computer-science windmills, to spur yourself to your next step of innovation and achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Programming Methodologies consists of lecture demos and practical experiments from the Summer School on Advanced Programming Methodologies which took place in Rome, Italy, on September 17-24, 1987. The school focused on tools of advanced programming as well as theoretical foundations for software engineering. Problems connected with implementation and application of high-level programming languages are highlighted. Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume first looks at two software development projects at the Institute of Informatics of the University of Warsaw in Poland, with emphasis on the methodologies used in programming and implementation. The reader is then introduced to flexible specification environments; object-oriented programming; and Paragon's type hierarchies for data abstraction. Subsequent chapters focus on the inheritance rule in object-oriented programming; a functional programming approach to modularity in large software systems; database management systems; and relational algebra and fixpoint computation for logic programming implementation. The book also examines modules in high-level programming languages before concluding with a chapter devoted to storage management. This book is intended for computer programmers, undergraduate students taking various courses in programming, and advanced students of computer science.
