Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the three point field goal on women's collegiate basketball. This study compared the average number of three point field goal attempts per game and average three point field goal shooting percentage per game to winning percentage in close and non-close games. Women's collegiate basketball teams representing the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Big Sky and Southeastern Conferences and the NCAA Division II North Central Conference were the subjects of this study. Data were collected during the 1990-91 basketball season. Statistical data indicated a significant correlation between the average three point field goal shooting percentage per game and winning percentage in all games combined. There was also a significant correlation between the average three point field goal shooting percentage per game and winning percentage in non-close games. A questionnaire surveying the opinions of the coaches of each institution involved in this research regarding the three point field goal was developed, distributed, and analyzed. Survey findings indicated coaches believe the current three point field goal rule should remain. The coaches surveyed suggested the three point field goal rule has changed the style of play by creating more competitive and exciting games, increased the ability for the team behind to "catch up" and win games, and increased the use of player-to-player defenses. Additionally, coaches consider rebounding strategies effected by the addition of the three point field goal. Coaches do not feel the three point field goal has helped eliminate rough low post play. Coaches were undecided whether the three point field goal has helped off-set the advantage of the big player, or changed fast break strategies . Coaches were also undecided on a suitable percentage that would be justifiable in attempting three point field goals compared to two point field goals. This research concludes the three point field goal rule in women's collegiate basketball has a positive influence on the game and the present three point field goal rule with the line remaining at 19'9" is favored by women's basketball coaches at both NCAA Divisions I and II. The statistical research indicates that three point field goal percentage may be an important consideration in a team's win/loss record. Future researchers may wish to investigate the effect of the three point field goal on fast break opportunities and rebounding strategies, or conduct a replication study to examine different levels of play"--Document.

The study was conducted with two Division II Women's basketball programs during the 1994-95 season. The experimental and control groups participated in a pre-test, mid-test and post-test to measure shooting accuracy changes over a 16 week period between Dec . 1, 1994 and Feb. 28, 1995. Each test consisted of 65 field goal attempts from 13 designated spots out to and including three point range, along the baseline, at 45 degree angles, and straight out from the basket as well as 20 free throw attempts. The control group did not participate in practice sessions with the device. The practice sessions were designed to examine the effect of immediate transfer by including a set of shots with the device followed by immediate practice on a basket without the device. The results ofthe experimental group's pre-test, mid-test and post-test scores while using the device for 30 practice sessions were compared to the results of the control group's pre-test, mid-test, and post- test scores without the use of the device or practice sessions to determine significance. A Repeated Measures of ANOVA statistical test was used to determine if a significant difference existed between the experimental and control group's pre-test, mid-test and post-test scores. Alpha was chosen at the .05 level. The experimental group improved in all four categories of shooting when comparing their scores with and without the device during the 30 practice sessions. The overall field goal percentage increased from 60.9% to 65.9%, the two point percentage from 74.4% to 77.2%, three point percentage from 39.5% to 48%, and free throw percentage from 76.3% to 78. 1%. Even though the study found positive results in the experimental group's shooting percentages in the four categories, significant difference was not found between the experimental and control group's pre-test, mid-test and post-test scores"--Document.

The North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) and the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP) convene conferences each year to present scientific findings and new developments in a rapidly expanding field. The AAASP and other organizations also qualify professionals as certified sport and exercise psychology consultants. Finally, a visit to any bookstore will reveal the lay public’s fascination with sports, as revealed in numerous self-help books and guides to perfecting athletic performance. Behavioral psychologists have studied sport psychology for more than three decades (Martin, Thompson, & Regehr, 2004). Applied behavior analysis (ABA), in particular, has been an instrumental approach to behavioral coaching in many sports, including baseball (Osborne, Rudrud, & Zezoney, 1990), basketball (Pates, Cummings, & Maynard, 2002), figure skating (Ming & Martin, 1996), football (Ward & Carnes, 2002), golf (Pates, Oliver, & Maynard, 2001), ice hockey (Rogerson & Hrycaiko, 2002), soccer (Brobst & Ward, 2002), swimming (Hume & Crossman, 1992), and tennis (Allison & Ayllon, 1980). ABA stresses the application of learning theory principles, objective measurement of athletic skills, controlled outcome evaluation, and socially significant behavior-change. Cognitive behavior therapy, or CBT, also has been a dominant approach to psychological intervention in sports (Meyers, Whelan, & Murphy, 1996; Weinberg & Comar, 1994). CBT addresses athletic performance through cognitive-change methods combined with behavioral practice and environmental modifications. The purpose of the book described in this proposal is to compile the most recent experimental and applied research in behavioral sport psychology. Several journal articles have reviewed critical dimensions of behavioral sport psychology (Martin et al., 2004; Martin, Vause, & Schwartzman, 2005) but no book has covered the topic with an emphasis on ABA and CBT methodology and practice.
