Book excerpt: This case study of a rural West Tennessee school district examines the relationship of the learning styles of middle school students and the learning and teaching styles of middle school teachers and the effects on student achievement. With the use of the Index of Learning Style Survey (ILS), the Paragon Learning Style Inventory (PLSI), and the Survey of Teaching Styles Questionnaire, 577 students and 30 teachers were surveyed to explore if there is a relationship between the learning and teaching styles of teachers, as well as determining if students' learning styles impact their achievement. The study finds that there is a significant relationship among 1) teachers' learning styles and students' learning styles; and 2) teachers' teaching styles and students learning styles. Results show that there is no significant relationship between student achievement and students' learning or between students' achievement score and the teaching and learning styles of teachers. Seventh grade English was the only time a significant difference was found in student achievement when teachers had different styles of learning.

Therefore, a majority of population will return to a community college for retraining and personal growth (McCabe, 2003). Since the turn of this century, many studies have been conducted to examine the success and challenges of the relatively new community college system. One of the most significant challenges is the large percentage of the U.S. population requiring remedial coursework. Fifty-five percent of students entering Florida's postsecondary system require remediation. Of this large remedial population, only 51% will complete their preparatory classes. Students who do complete classes take an average of two years to finish preparatory classes and move on to college-level work. It is hypothesized that learning styles information will empower students with knowledge about their study habits and positively effect academic achievement. This research first examined the quantitative effect that learning styles information had on student achievement. The second qualitative phase of the study examined students' perceptions of learning styles information. Three Introductory Algebra (MAT 0024) courses at a large suburban community college were intensively studied during one spring semester. Due to the size of the study (N=69), results obtained in the quantitative portion were not significant enough to accept the hypotheses. Responses in focus groups showed that students generally felt that learning styles information was useful and half the class used the information to modify how they studied. Half of the students in the control group modified their study habits in response to knowing more about their learning style. Although the qualitative data was supportive of the usefulness of learning styles information in the classroom the quantitative data did not support the hypotheses that learning styles information improves achievement.

Inroads in quantitative methods have been made in the psychometric and sociometric literatures, but these methods are not yet common knowledge in the mathematics education community. Book excerpt: United States policymakers have taken measures to improve learning for all students emphasizing the use of scientifically based research in choosing educational programs to promote school improvement and student learning. However, educators, researchers and policymakers debate about which factors are most important in affecting student achievement. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) places major emphasis upon teacher quality as a factor in improving achievement for all students. This emphasis grows out of research showing that teachers' mastery of the academic content they teach is critical to engaging students and is a significant factor in raising levels of student achievement. Middle or secondary school teachers must possess the equivalent of an academic major in the core academic area (107th U.S. Congress, 2002). To meet this need, a key goal of the Cleveland MSP was to increase middle school teacher content knowledge in mathematics through teacher participation in graduate coursework. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of impact that this program had on middle grades student mathematics achievement. In addition, the stability of teaching assignment was investigated. A two- level hierarchical linear model was used to explore the relationship between the teacher and student variables. Over 2500 student cases and over 90 teacher cases per grade level were used for analysis. Results indicated that teacher MSP participation, as a main effect, was significantly and negatively associated with student achievement on the sixth grade OAT-M. In addition, there was a significant positive relationship between teacher MSP participation and student achievement on the OAT-M when students had additional instructional time for sixth and eighth grades. Teacher assignment stability, as a main effect, was significantly and positively associated with sixth grade student achievement on the OAT-M and was significantly and negatively associated with eighth grades student achievement in mathematics when students had additional instructional time. Finally, the main effect of classroom mean prior achievement was significantly and negatively associated with eighth grade mathematics achievement, and classroom mean prior achievement was positively associated with student prior achievement for seventh grade students. As shown in this study, teacher participation in graduate level content coursework can enhance other teacher and student characteristics and thereby contribute to middle grades student achievement in mathematics.

Correlational research design that is one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The sample of the research consists of 652 8th grade students 347 are male and 305 are female and the students continue their education in 11 different middle schools in the centre of Bayburt in Turkey. In the research, two data collection tools were used. The first tool is Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ) that was developed by Reid (1987) and translated by Bengi ̇(2008) into Turkish. The second tool is 45-questions achievement test that selected from TIMSS 2011 mathematics questions according to experts' opinions. Frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, ANOVA and correlation analysis were applied through SPSS for data analysis. The most dominant learning style of the students is auditory and the second one is kinaesthetic learning style. Students' general TIMSS scores vary between 11 and 94 and the average TIMSS achievement score is 43.38. Additionally, it was seen that there is no significant relationship between TIMSS mathematics achievement and learning styles.
