Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine African-American student perceptions of their parents' and guardians' attitudes towards education and academic achievement at five urban schools in the Kansas City, Missouri School District. One hundred four sixth grade African-American students responded to 28 statements about their personal beliefs and attitudes as well as their perceptions of their parents' and guardians' attitudes towards learning and education. Fourteen statements on the survey invited students to consider their personal thoughts and opinions about school and academic achievement; 14 statements also required students to predict their parents' and guardians' attitudes and feelings about the same or similar educational concerns. The Likert scale was used as a measurement method for assessing student responses. Information from this study established significant common factors among students and their interpretations of their parents' and guardians' attitudes regarding academic achievement. The survey results shed light on the complex relationships between messages students hear and beliefs they deemed were actually held by parents and guardians. Convictions students believe were espoused by primary caregivers may affect their own opinions about the value of education and their performance at school.

Book excerpt: This study used survey design to explore the relationship between protective influences (support from parents, teachers and peers, social capital assets, and social support use), contextual risks, and two achievement outcomes in a representative sample of male and female African American high school seniors (N=317). Responses to two questionnaires, weighted cumulative grade point averages, and eleventh grade Virginia English Reading Standards of Learning test scores were analyzed. Multiple regression analysis revealed that some support variables were predictive of better achievement outcomes and others were associated with poorer outcomes. Three of the parent support predictors were associated with poorer achievement outcomes, suggesting that low-achieving African American students may have heightened needs for parent support during their senior year in high school, a point in time that determines the trajectory for years to follow. Even though 44 percent of the sample acknowledged a high level of exposure to contextual risks, its effects were more predictive of poorer outcomes for males than for females. This finding suggests that males may be more vulnerable to the effects of contextual risks. Additionally, only two support variables, Friend Support and Family Togetherness, moderated the influence of contextual risks on male student achievement. Qualitative findings revealed that important gender differences exist with regard to perceptions of support within the samples' home, school, and peer group environments. Females identified emotional support as a success factor more than males. In contrast, males acknowledged the importance of behavioral support as a school success factor. Both males and females endorsed tangible support as an important school success factor. Respondents also endorsed ambivalence about the role of peer support as a school success factor. Taken in combination, the study findings increase our understanding of the relationship between the context-linked experiences of urban African American adolescents and their achievement outcomes. The findings also support the critical need to extend our understanding about the role of contextual influences as we facilitate stronger connections between homes, schools, and communities. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: There is a great deal of evidence that parental involvement is positively related to how children and adolescents perform in school (Flouri & Buchanan, 2004; McLanahan, Tach, & Schneider, 2013). Few studies (Battle & Scott, 2000; Reynolds, Howard, & Jones, 2015) have specifically looked at the influence of fathers and non-biological father figures on the educational outcomes of African American adolescents. Father involvement is crucial to the academic success of African American males. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of involved African American fathers regarding the academic success of their high school age sons? For the purpose of this study, father involvement is broadly defined as engagement (interacting with the child directly), accessibility (being available for the child, but not interacting directly with the child), and responsibility (monitoring and providing for the child; Lamb, Pleck, Charnov, & Levine, 1985). Social ecological theory will be used to guide the study. Bronfenbrenner (1979) theorized that socio-cultural systems and environmental factors influence a child’s development. Data was collected primarily from African American fathers who were involved in their high school age sons’ academics through interviews, a focus group session, and document analysis. Phenomenological data analysis procedures as described by Moustakas’ (1994) seven step model were utilized. The findings suggests that through the lived experiences of 10 African American fathers three themes were developed: getting to the next level, father-son relationships, and the importance of education. The study concluded that father involvement is a crucial component in assisting African American males with becoming academic successful in urban high schools as well as life.

Book excerpt: With a continued and recently growing difference in achievement between African American and White students and between African American boys and their female peers, attention is re-focusing on parents as agents of positive change. No Child Left Behind calls on schools to reduce inter-group achievement gaps in part by making parents instruments of their children's success. However, to effectively engage parents in their children's education and reduce the achievement gap, we must understand better the nature and effects of parental engagement and how the construct, as it is enacted, may differ across family race and child gender. With data for African American and White parents of boys and girls from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study - Kindergarten Class, this study tests, via structural equation modeling, a multidimensional conceptualization of parental engagement, its predictors, and its effects. Confirmatory factor analysis results support a five-factor, behavioral conceptualization of parental engagement for African American and White parents of boys and girls & mdash;each factor representing a role parents play when engaging in their children's learning: Resource Agent, Manager, Teacher, Encourager, and Relational Advocate. Parent-related constraints (such as socioeconomic status and education) was the strongest negative predictor of parental engagement and parental expectations across all groups, while school-related constraints (parent perceptions of school and teacher efforts to inform and engage them) was a particularly strong negative predictor of parental engagement for African American parents of girls only. Logistical constraints (such as inconvenient meeting times) and parental expectations were weak predictors of actual parental engagement for all four groups. For African American and White boys and girls alike, parental engagement was a moderate, positive predictor of their classroom effort, while parental engagement and effort were both strong, positive predictors of kindergarteners' cognitive performance. Results of latent mean analyses suggest that African American parents tend to engage less in their children's education than White parents. Nevertheless, while African American and White parents experience similar levels of school-related and logistical constraints, African American parents experience far more parent-related constraints than White parents, possibly explaining this racial gap in engagement. Implications of these findings for policy, research, and practice are discussed.
