Download or read book Ill Effects written by Martin Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ill Effects is a radical re-examination of the whole 'media effects' debate. It questions not only whether the media is capable of directly influencing people's views and actions, but also whether the idea of 'effects' is the most useful way of conceptualising the relationship between the media and audiences. Ill Effects looks at the reasons why the media are routinely blamed for horrific events such as the murders of James Bulger and Suzanne Capper and the Hungerford massacre, as well as for perceived trends such as the alleged 'death of the family' and the rise of 'yob culture'. The authors' concern goes beyond individual cases: they discuss the development and current state of play of research into media effects, the remarkable power of 'common-sense' notions of media effects and the way in which the effects issue has become embroiled in debates about freedom of expression and censorship. They suggest how audiences really respond to media texts, and argue that there is an urgent need for informed and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the media. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I suspect that this Handbook may become a ′definitive′ text as we seek to include the perspectives of all types of people, to reach beyond the boundaries that have separated people of one culture from those of another, and to socialize our youth to be more multiculturally sensitive." —Carolyn Stroman, Howard University The SAGE Handbook of Child Development explores the multicultural development of children through the varied and complex interplay of traditional agents of socialization as well as contemporary media influences, examining how socialization practices and media content construct and teach us about diverse cultures. Editors Joy K. Asamen, Mesha L. Ellis, and Gordon L. Berry, along with chapter authors from a wide variety of disciplines, highlight how to analyze, compare, and contrast alternative perspectives of children of different cultures, domestically and globally, with the major principles and theories of child development in cognitive, socioemotional, and/or social/contextual domains. This volume will help readers evaluate ethnicity, socioeconomic, and gender issues in child development and see how these issues influence individual development as well as social policy. Key Features Provides comprehensive coverage: This handbook covers theory, research, and best practices for traditional agents of socialization such as family and home, socio-political and religious communities, and schools and peers, as well as the traditional (e.g., print and television) and newer media forms (e.g., the Internet and video games). Presents multiple perspectives: A well-known and impressive list of contributors from numerous disciplines represent various theoretical orientations and offer a rich variety of viewpoints regarding research and methodological assumptions. Offers versatile utility: This volume will be a valuable resource for program development, research and evaluation, or hands-on community-based projects. In addition, the practical applications will be of interest to broadcasters, public policy and advocacy groups, teachers, and other childcare professionals.
Book Synopsis Before Journalism Schools by : Randall S. Sumpter
Download or read book Before Journalism Schools written by Randall S. Sumpter and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randall Sumpter questions the dominant notion that reporters entering the field in the late nineteenth century relied on an informal apprenticeship system to learn the rules of journalism. Drawing from the experiences of more than fifty reporters, he argues that cub reporters could and did access multiple sources of instruction, including autobiographies and memoirs of journalists, fiction, guidebooks, and trade magazines. Arguments for “professional journalism” did not resonate with the workaday journalists examined here. These news workers were more concerned with following a personal rather than a professional code of ethics, and implemented their own work rules. Some of those rules governed “delinquent” behavior. While scholars have traced some of the connections between beginning journalists and learning opportunities, Sumpter shows that much more can be discovered, with implications for understanding the development of journalistic professionalism and present-day instances of journalistic behavior.
