Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence participating in a college marching band may play in the development of effective music teaching skills. A researcher-designed survey instrument was designed. The survey instrument consisted of a series of close-ended questions designed to collect demographic data, as well as a series of questions designed to determine the extent to which college marching band is perceived as a valuable part of the undergraduate music education curriculum, the extent to which participating in college marching band might aid in the development of effective teaching skills, and the extent to which certain social and musical skills identified in the review of literature may be developed as a result of participating in college marching band. The survey tool also included one open-ended question in which participants were encouraged to provide any additional information they felt may be pertinent to the study. Participants (N = 454) were public and private high school and middle school band directors selected at random from throughout the United States. Data were collected utilizing an online survey tool. Results of this study indicated a majority of respondents perceive their participation in college marching band to have been an effective way to develop effective music teaching skills. A majority of respondents also indicated their participation in college marching band was a valuable component of their undergraduate music education coursework. Respondents ranked the personal characteristics associated with effective music teaching higher than instructional behaviors and musical skills. The skill or characteristic respondents perceived as being most developed as a result of their participation in college marching band was the "ability to work towards a goal." The skill perceived as least developed was "proficiency on a secondary instrument." These results are consistent with those of previous research which found in-service music educators value their participation in college performing ensembles.

This study also examined if there were differences between perceptions of where pre-service and in-service music educators perceive they will learn these skills for marching band. The participants for this study (N = 63) were pre-service (n = 25) and in-service (n = 38) music teachers from one large, southeastern public university. All pre-service teachers were undergraduate instrumental music education majors, who had not yet completed the marching band techniques course, and had participated in high school and/or college marching band. All in-service teachers had graduated with an instrumental music education degree, were currently teaching secondary band, and participated in high school and/or college marching band. The researcher-designed surveys asked participants about 19 marching band skills divided among five categories: marching, music acquisition, design, logistical, and teaching skills. For each of the skills, participants indicated where they think they will learn/did learn the named skill, selecting from university course, marching band participation, or on your own. Results indicate pre-service teachers perceive they will acquire marching band skills primarily through university coursework while in-service teachers indicated they acquired those skills primarily on their own. The influence of marching band participation on marching band skill acquisition was relatively similar between pre-service and in-service teachers. A two independent sample X2 test was calculated to determine if there was a significant difference between pre-service and in-service responses for all 19 marching band skills. Results suggest pre-service and in-service music teachers have similar perceptions of where musical skills are learned, but differing opinions of where the non-musical skills are learned.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential benefits of high school marching band participation from the perspectives of high school band directors, band students, and band parents. Through the use of survey methodology, this research aimed to examine the potential musical benefits as they pertain to the 2014 NAfME music education standards for ensembles. This study also examined the potential social benefits as they relate to the constructs for social and emotional learning outcomes as stated by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). The participants included 14 band programs purposefully sampled to represent a variety of demographic and philosophical variables. Three unique questionnaires were developed (one for the director, one for students, and one for parents) containing items for participants to rate on a Likert-type scale, as well as prompts which requested narrative response. Results from all three surveys (directors N = 14, students N = 431, parents N = 331) showed unanimous agreement that the improved concept of rhythm was the highest perceived musical benefit of marching band participation. Evidence regarding the social benefits showed that participants viewed marching band as an activity that mostly improves the SEL competencies of relationship skills, self-management, and self- awareness.

Effective teaching characteristics were collected from related literature and used to construct a survey of 79 variables, teacher behaviors (n = 26), rehearsal activities (n = 28), and targets of instruction (n = 25). The survey was distributed, and 54 marching band directors responded. Participants were asked to rank their top seven characteristic from each category. The resulting rank order was used to construct a second survey deriving from the top characteristics of each category. The second survey was distributed, and 55 marching band directors responded. Participants were asked to rate the seven top characteristics from each category of effective teaching characteristics based on a 7-point Likert Like Scale. Results identified the top teacher behavior as, building culture and student relationships, the top rehearsal activity as, repetition, and the top target of instruction as, tone/quality production. Statistical analysis revealed teacher behaviors and targets of instruction to be rated significantly higher (p = 0.05) than rehearsal activities. Furthermore, a significant difference in the perceived importance of building culture and relationships, and error detection, was found between novice and experienced teachers (p = 0.05). Detailed analysis of remaining results and implications will be discussed in this study.

University band programs work to incorporate musical, personal, and leadership experiences through the act of music-making in which student leaders develop effective leadership skills. Student leaders are allotted opportunities to grow in confidence, leadership skills, and motivational techniques as they interacted with and teach their peers. Leadership education provides guidelines and models for understanding student leadership development. Two of these models can help to clarify three aspects of development occurring and how those aspects join together to create the bigger picture of a student's leadership capacity: readiness, willingness, and ability. Through a post hoc case study utilizing an R1 university marching band program, student leaders were selected and interviewed to better understand how they developed over their tenure of positional leadership. The findings addressed the research question in better understanding students' development in self-efficacy, motivation to lead peers, gained leadership skills, and overall leadership development. Findings also revealed additional aspects of student leadership development from the perspective of the participants. The researcher utilized multiple interviews with nine participants, stimulated recall, and observation to better understand the participants' reflection of development. Understanding how students are developing and why can provide educators with guidelines and processes for training and assessing student leaders in a university marching band.

Book excerpt: The need for understanding democratic practices in education and their role in our classrooms has been discussed for many years within music education. Frances Elliott Clark, nicknamed the "Mother of MENC" and the first president of MENC in 1907, recognized that teaching and learning through democracy is a commitment that requires an acceptance of the changing world and a focus on learning from one another (Allsup, 2007). As educators, it is our role to serve as ambassadors for providing students more "musical leadership with respect to increasing the breadth, depth, and vitality of students musical experiences so that they can contribute to the democratization of musical culture" (Woodford, 2005, p. 29). Through democratic practices in our music classrooms, teachers can begin to provide students with an educational environment that allows for independent thinking, appreciation for the common good, and the ability to become promoters of change (DeLorenzo, 2003). This study looked at democratic practices on the marching band field. The purpose of this study was to find the relationship between the use of democratic practices and festival scores of competitive marching bands.For this study, a questionnaire was devised to determine teachers' perceptions of how frequently they use democratic practices within their competitive marching band. The survey solicited complete responses from 42 band directors within the Cavalcade of Bands and Tournament of Bands marching band circuits. The survey was divided into three sections: general information, leadership team responsibilities, and student responsibilities. Leadership and student responsibilities were analyzed according to the frequency certain activities occurred within the competitive marching band using a Likert Scale (Never - All the Time). Analysis revealed that there are many examples of democratic practices found within competitive marching bands that are used to meet the individual needs of the students and the band as a whole. However, the frequencies of these practices differ between the Leadership Team, Student Involvement, and Overall Democratic Scores of high and low scoring competitive bands. This observable difference shows the need for a better understanding of how democratic practices influence competitive marching band success. Further research needs to be conducted to look at the quality of these democratic experiences within a marching band and how student happiness may affect the differences in competitive marching band scores.

Book excerpt: Retention rates for college marching band participation show a considerable number of students choose to drop out every year, with a range of 17.6 % attrition at smaller universities and 42% in larger Division 1 Programs (“A recent series of studies”, 2014; Townsend, 2004). Unfortunately, most students leave after only participating for one year (Patzig, 1983; Fuller, 1995; Townsend, 2004) suggesting the transition from first to second year membership is especially consequential to the goal of improving retention. In this study, the University of Alabama's Million Dollar Band (MDB) was examined. The MDB is widely known regionally and arguably throughout the United States for its close involvement to its storied football program and for excellence in music performances across many decades. Unfortunately, at the time of this study, the first-year member retention rate for the MDB was only 66.4. To determine those factors that may improve retention, all first-year members of the MDB (N=144) in 2015 were invited to complete a survey two months before registering for fall 2017 classes. Participants' (n=78, 54.2%) provided basic demographic information (e.g., gender information, in-state/out-of-state status, instrument, degree/major, scholarship information), current participation in other band ensembles (e.g., pep band, concert band), and indicated their intention to re-audition for the MDB. The questionnaire included 22 items: evaluating each factor with a 5-point Likert-scale: (1) not influential, (2) somewhat not influential, (3) undecided, (4) somewhat influential, and (5) influential. Participants were also asked to share three items they enjoyed the most and least during the marching band season; these were read by independent evaluators and themes were identified. Additional questions asked whether first-year members would recommend joining the MDB to their peers and whether they agreed to participate in a concert band during the spring 2016 semester to “guarantee membership” and thereby avoid having to re-audition for the 2016 MDB. Participants' responses were classified into four factors that influenced their intended decision to return for a second year: time requirements, degree responsibilities, performance enjoyment and financial opportunities. Common ideas emerging from participants' open-ended responses to items enjoyed were social, travel, performance, pride, and game day, while items they did not enjoy were time-commitments, number of rehearsals, external factors, leadership, and musical selections. Recommendations for future research and implications for college marching bands were addressed.

Participants (N = 168) were undergraduate pre-service music education majors who participated in band through high school and college. The participants were from seven universities located in Florida (n = 2), Kentucky (n = 3), and Ohio (n = 2). Music education majors from these universities were asked to complete a two-section questionnaire regarding participation in competitive marching band and concert band events. The first section included six questions relating to music education majors' previous high school band experiences with competitive marching band and concert band events. Section two included seven Likert-type questions pertaining to music education majors' feelings about pressure to compete and importance of participating in competitive marching band and concert band events. Results indicated music education majors' high school bands generally attended one to two concert band contests/festivals per year, but the number of marching band competitions attended in a year was inconsistent between band programs, with responses ranging from zero marching band competitions per year to more than ten in a school year. The amount of concert and marching band events attended varied by state. While pre-service music education majors expected to receive pressure to participate in competitive events as band directors, there was an inconsistency among variances regarding the amount of pressure received and from where they would receive pressure. Music education majors expected to receive the most pressure from peers/colleagues in all areas. Participation in concert band and non-ranked/non-rated events was slightly more important to music education majors than participation in competitive marching band events. However, all events were rated with some importance.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to survey Ohio high school marching band directors to obtain their perceptions of need, and their undergraduate preparation, in the area of marching band techniques. It was determined that a questionnaire was the best method to solicit opinions. Responses were solicited from a sample of 400 Ohio high school marching band directors. A total of 226 questionnaires were returned, representing 56.5% of the target sample, of which 214 were usable. Results from the survey indicated that 67.8% of the respondents had taken a full course in marching band techniques as an undergraduate student. The results also revealed that 72.9% of the respondents had participated in a collegiate marching band. Data were collected regarding twenty-eight teaching factors related to teaching a high school marching band. For each factor participants were asked to define their perceived degree of need for preparation in the undergraduate curriculum. Participants were also asked to indicate their perceived degree of preparation for each factor through coursework in marching band techniques and through participation in a collegiate marching band. The factors indicated to have the highest degree of need were those from the category "skills for marching band rehearsals" and from the category "marching band music." The factors perceived by the participants to have the highest degree of preparation through coursework were those from the "philosophical" category, and the factors the respondents felt best prepared for through participation in a collegiate marching band were from the category "show design techniques." Respondents indicated a higher degree of need than degree of preparation for all twenty-eight of the teaching factors. Results indicate that respondents perceived twelve of the factors were best prepared through coursework, while sixteen of the factors were perceived to have been best prepared through participation in a collegiate marching band. For this reason, it would appear as if future instrumental music educators would be best served through coursework in marching band techniques as well as participation in a collegiate marching band.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This descriptive correlational study examined the relationship between high school band directors' teaching style and personality and their ratings in marching and concert band festivals using the Five-Factor Model of personality and Gumm's Music Teaching Style Inventory. The sample (N=176) consisted of 46% of all high school band directors in Florida. Criterion variables included marching and concert festival ratings, state concert band ratings, Florida Marching Band Coalition marching competition scores, frequency of attendance of these last two events, and the balance between marching and concert band. Predictor variables included thirty personality facets and eight teaching styles. Four demographic variables included gender, experience, academic degree, and primary instrument. One predictor, Time Efficiency, stood out as having particularly strong correlations with all of criterion variables. Regression models produced the following findings: 23% of the variation in concert band ratings can be explained from Time Efficiency, Immoderation, Music Concept Learning Assertiveness, and Nonverbal Motivation; 22% of the variation in marching band scores can be explained by Time Efficiency, Music Concept Learning, Imagination, Modesty, Cheerfulness, and Anxiety; 20% of the variation in participation in state Florida Bandmasters Association concert band festival participation can be explained by Time Efficiency, Positive Learning Environment, Immoderation, Music Concept Learning, Group Dynamic, and Assertive Teaching, and 11% of the variation in FMBC competitive marching band event attendance can be explained by Time Efficiency, Nonverbal Motivation, Dutifulness, and Modesty. Most subjects (84.3%) were balanced, while the remaining 15.7% were marching oriented. There was no significant difference in marching ratings between groups, although balanced subjects scored significantly higher in concert band and attended significantly fewer marching competitions.
