Book excerpt: Hernandez (2013) claimed that the economic landscape in the United States of American (U.S.) has changed over the last decade, increasing the number of children of low social class standing. Counselors for Social Justice (CSJ; 2011) noted that an achievement gap exists between children of low social class standing and their middle and upper social class standing peers. School counselors and school counselor-in-training (SCITs) serve as advocates to address systemic barriers impeding academic, career, and personal/social success of all students (American School Counselor Association; ASCA, 2012; CSJ, 2011; Erford, 2011). Therefore, the need to understand school counselors’ and SCITs’ multicultural self-efficacy is imperative (Holcomb-McCoy, Harris, Hines, & Johnston, 2008). ASCA and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP, 2016; 2009) provide standards and guidelines for training school counselors to address issues of social class and classism. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between SCITs multicultural competency training and their self-efficacy in social class and classism training regardless of race/ethnicity and gender. This quantitative study consisted of 169 SCITs from CACREP and non-CACREP school counselor programs across the five Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) regions. The survey used in this study contained modified versions of the Multicultural Counseling Competence and Training Survey-Revised (School Counselor Version) (MCCTS-R; Holcomb-McCoy & Day-Vines, 2004); the School Counselor Self-Efficacy Scale (SCSE; Bodenhorn & Skaggs, 2005); the Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR; Paulhus, 1984); and a social class and classism training questionnaire and demographic questionnaire developed for the purposes of this study. Results from this study indicated program accreditation status (i.e., CACREP and non-CACREP) does not appear to influence multicultural competence or self-efficacy, but non-CACREP status did seem to increase perceived social class and classism training competence. In addition, results suggested low social class standing appeared to negatively influence perceived multicultural competency, self-efficacy, and social class and classism training more so than middle or upper social class groups. The number of multicultural competency courses and training level were consistent significant predictors in perceived multicultural competency, self-efficacy, and social class and classism training. However, region did not appear to influence perceived multicultural competency, self-efficacy, or social class and classism training. Finally, this study found a moderate, positive relationship between perceived multicultural competency and self-efficacy regarding social class and classism training. Implications from this study supported previous research (i.e., Constantine, 2001b; Constantine & Yeh, 2001; Holcomb-McCoy, 2005, 2001; Holcomb-McCoy, Gonzalez, & Johnston, 2009; Holcomb-McCoy & Myers, 1999; Larson, Suzuki, Gillespie, Potenza, Bechtel, & Toulouse, 1992) that the number of multicultural competency training courses, training level, and counseling experiences increased perceived multicultural competence and self-efficacy in social class and classism training. Therefore, SCITs should experience social class issues early and often in training through role-plays and modeling to improve the multicultural self-efficacy in social class and classism training (Cartwright, Daniels, & Zhang, 2008; Owen, Bodenhorn, & Bryant, 2010).

Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States (2014), in her address at the American School Counselor Association Conference stated that school counselors needed to be provided with professional development opportunities designed specifically for their needs. Though the need for supervision and professional training has been identified, there has been little recent research done addressing the unique professional development needs of school counselors in rural America. There is also a paucity of research that assesses the impact of state-sponsored school counseling professional development training. The first article summarizes the research on school counselors in rural America and indicates the need to provide them with professional development opportunities and/or supervision to meet the higher demands placed on them and the lower availability of resources to meet those demands. The second article examines the impact of state-sponsored professional development training on school counselors' self-efficacy, including school counselors working in rural school settings. Albert Bandura's self-efficacy theory (1986) and research indicating the impact self-efficacy has on a number of indicators of counselor well-being and then their provision of counseling services served as the theoretical base for this research. The assessment instrument utilized in the study was based on Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Outcomes indicated that state-sponsored professional development training may have similar efficacy with rural school counselors as with those from more urban and suburban settings and when provided via web-based as well as through site-based delivery. Caution should be used when interpreting these results due to the validity threats in a non-equivalent posttest design and with small sample sizes. Additional research is recommended.

Indeed, many studies have found that healthy masculine identity development is associated with a number of positive outcomes for males in general, including Black males. In school counseling literature, however, this discussion has been relatively absent—particularly regarding those students living in urban contexts. Indeed, research devoted to the study of Black males in the school counseling literature focuses almost exclusively on race and issues associated with its social construction with only cursory, if any, attention given to their masculine identity development as a function of living in urban communities and attending urban schools. Based on this lack of information, it is probably a safe assumption that intentional, systematic, culturally relevant efforts to assist Black males in developing healthy achievement and masculine identities based on their unique personal, social, academic experiences and future career goals are not being applied by school counselors concerned with meeting students’ needs. School counselors are in a unique position, nonetheless, to lend their considerable expertise—insights, training and skills—to improving life outcomes among Black males—a population who are consistently in positions of risk according to a number of quality of life indicators. Without knowledge and awareness of Black males’ masculine identity development in urban areas, coupled with the requisite skills to influence the myriad factors that enhance and impede healthy development in such environments, they are missing out on tremendous opportunities which other professions appear to understand and, quite frankly, seem to take more seriously. As such, this book proposes to accomplish two specific goals: 1. Highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends. 2. Encourage school counselors to give more thought to Black male identity development that takes into consideration differential experiences in society as a whole, and schools in particular, as a function of the intersection of their race, as well as their gender. The first rationale for this book, then, is to highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends (e.g., standards?based accountability practices) in urban environments. However, I recognize the role of school counselors has never been fully integrated into educational reform programs. As such, their positions are often unregulated and determined by people in positions of power who do not understand their training, job?specific standards and, thus, potential impact on the lives of Black male students. As a result, their vast potential to develop strong interventions designed to address the myriad racial and masculine factors that serve to enhance and impede Black males’ academic achievement is often unrealized. Therefore, the second reason for this special issue is to include the scholarship of professional school counselors and counselor educators with policy change in mind. Scholars will be invited to contribute manuscripts that explore race, masculinity and academic achievement in relation to the role of school counselors. This is designed to encourage school counselors and counselor educators to give more thought to Black male identity development that takes into consideration differential experiences in society as a whole, and schools in particular, as a function of the intersection of their race, as well as their gender.

Career counselors' self-efficacy in general, and particularly regarding multicultural clientele, is a key component of career counseling effectiveness. This may be especially true for career counselors of color although little research has been conducted to assess variables predictive of self-efficacy among career counselors of color. Due to the potential that their own personal experiences of racial insults may impact treatment competency perceptions, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether self-perceived multicultural competence and self-perceived racial microaggression predicted career counseling self-efficacy among counselors of color. Minority stress theory informed the underpinnings of the present study. One hundred eighteen licensed professional counselors and licensed rehabilitation counselors, self-identified as counselors of color and practicing career counseling, completed the Career Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale, the Racial and Ethnic Microaggression Scale, the Multicultural Counseling Inventory, and a demographic questionnaire. Four hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that stronger career counseling therapeutic process and competency self-efficacy beliefs were significantly predicted by self-perceived increases in multicultural competency skills. However, neither other forms of self-perceived multicultural competencies nor self-perceived microaggression predicted self-efficacy beliefs. Implications for multicultural theory, career counselor practice and education, and future research are discussed.

(b) Is the relationship between self-efficacy and multicultural counseling competence mediated by self-advocacy for school counselors? The data were collected from 306 school counselors practicing in the US. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Model (SEM) were used in the data analysis in the study. The results suggested self-efficacy significantly predicted multicultural counseling competence among the US school counselors. The results of the hypothesized structural model also suggested that self-advocacy had a strong indirect effect on multicultural counseling competence mediated by self-efficacy. The results of the data analysis, discussions of the findings, implications of the current study, and limitations and future research directions are presented herein.

The top five areas of need in terms of training were: (a) "Use functional Spanish to work more effectively with the Latino population;" (b) "Understanding how the students' Latino culture heritage impacts their education values;" (c) "Interpret Latino students' nonverbal body language and its significance in counseling;" (d) "Understand how the students' Latino cultural heritage impacts their educational goals;" and (e) "Connect with community organizations that support Latino students' development." Inferential statistical analyses revealed no difference between the rankings of self-efficacy and training needs. The implications for practice and research were discussed.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated the relationship between mental health counselor's self-efficacy and multicultural counseling competency. Counselor self-efficacy and multicultural counseling competency were assessed using two self-report measures. The Counselor Self-Efficacy Scale (CSES) and the Multicultural Counseling Awareness Scale: Form B (MCAS:B) were administered to members of the Oregon Mental Health Counseling Association using the Diliman Method for Internet Surveys. Multiple linear regression was used to identify any relationship between multicultural competency and counselor self-efficacy. Data was collected yielding a response rate of 35% which indicated only marginal statistical significance between counselor self-efficacy and multicultural competence. These results suggest that there could be a relationship between multicultural competence and counselor self-efficacy and has many implications for future research.
