Book excerpt: When comparing the number of contributions for the proceedings of the third symposium on The Influence of Antibiotics on the Host-Parasite Relationship with those of its two predecessors, one becomes aware of the progress that has been made in this field. It is obvious that the design of experiments has substantially refined and therefore the clinical relevance of the results has gained in significance. The editors of this volume would like to thank all the colleagues who contributed to this book. It is hoped that interest in this field will develop further and that it will finally yield results which one day may be the basis for an improvement of antibiotic therapy. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second International Symposium on "The Influence of Antibiotics on the Host Parasite Relationship" was held in Munich, F. R. G. , from March 28 to 30,1985. The topics of the meeting dealt with the aspects of changes in bacterial metabolism and structure which occur under the influence of antibiotics, and with the effects of such changes on the antibacterial host resistance. The influence on pathogenicity factors, changes in the outer membrane of bacteria, as well as the influence on the individual components of the defence system were analysed in detail. In addition, these studies showed that antibiotics proved to be an excellent tool for the examination of bacterial physiology, so that, 50 years after the introduction of antibiotics, additional important knowledge can be gained about the effect of these substances on bacteria. Considering the observations reported, it appears justifiable to postulate that new antibiotics should be routinely tested with respect to their possible effects on antiinfectious resistance. Of course, a consensus will have to be found on which to base methods and criteria employ€d. The symposium documented an increasing interest of microbiologists and clini cians for this field of research. It would not have been possible to organize it without the substantial support of the Paul Ehrlich Society as well as of Squibb-Von Heyden Pharma, Inc. Particular help concerning the organization has been given by Werner Kremer of Squibb-Von Heyden Pharma.
Book Synopsis The Influence of Antibiotics on the Host-Parasite Relationship by : H.-U. Eickenberg
Download or read book The Influence of Antibiotics on the Host-Parasite Relationship written by H.-U. Eickenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When discussing the drug, the bug, and the host in the past, emphasis was laid mainly upon the interaction between antibiotics and bacteria or the reaction of the host to the invading organism. Today, however, standardized immunologic parameters are available for evaluating cellular and humoral responses and an increasing number of publications deal with the host reaction to the antibiotics administered. Some re searchers and clinicians felt that the time had come to bring together investigators studying the influence of antibiotics on the host-parasite relationship. The first section of this book therefore covers the influence of chemotherapy on the host defense system. Here antibody production and cellular immunity, the influence of antibiotics on the function of phagocytic cells, and immunostimulation combined with antibiotics in the treatment of infection are presented. The second section deals with the influence of antibiotics on the produc tion of extracellular and cellular virulence factors by bacteria, the adherence of bacteria being of utmost importance here. In addition, phagocytosis and serum bactericidal activity are discussed. In Prof. Opferkuch and Prof. Hahn I found two colleagues keen and knowledgeable enough to organize the First International Meeting on the Influence of Antibiotics on the Host-Parasite-Relationship. These proceedings of the meeting constitute a survey of the latest develop ments in this field, and should be of interest to clinical and researchers. Book Synopsis Host Defense Dysfunction in Trauma, Shock and Sepsis by : Eugen Faist
Download or read book Host Defense Dysfunction in Trauma, Shock and Sepsis written by Eugen Faist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unique overview of all aspects of host defense alterations under stressful conditions. It is based on the most important contributions given at the "2nd International Congress on the Immune Consequences of Trauma, Shock, and Sepsis-Mechanisms and Therapeutic Approaches," which was held in Munich under the auspices of the most distinguished scientific societies involved in this field (Society of Critical Care Medicine, European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Societe Internationale de Chirurgie, Surgical Infection Society, Surgical Infection Society Europe, European Society for Surgical Research, International Society for Burn Injury, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and National Institutes of Health). Since the first conference of this kind in 1988, new information from basic studies and clinical trials has provided exciting and novel insights into the immune dysfunctions accom panying trauma, shock, and sepsis. The volume is divided into 18 parts presenting the structural background of trauma-induced alterations of immune and imflammatory mechanisms as well as the currently discussed therapeutic interventions designed to restore or maintain normal host defenses following major injury. Introducing the general theme of the book is a summary of the essential keystones of trauma and sepsis-related immune deficits. Discussions of the progress in trauma care brought through better understanding of the cell biology of injury and of the major clinical factors that influence host defense integrity in operative medicine provide a setting for understanding the wide array of detailed information that is presented thereafter.
Book Synopsis The Rasputin Effect: When Commensals and Symbionts Become Parasitic by : Christon J. Hurst
Download or read book The Rasputin Effect: When Commensals and Symbionts Become Parasitic written by Christon J. Hurst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on those instances when benign and even beneficial relationships between microbes and their hosts opportunistically change and become detrimental toward the host. It examines the triggering events which can factor into these changes, such as reduction in the host’s capacity for mounting an effective defensive response due to nutritional deprivation, coinfections and seemingly subtle environmental influences like the amounts of sunlight, temperature, and either water or air quality. The effects of environmental changes can be compounded when they necessitate a physical relocation of species, in turn changing the probability of encounter between microbe and host. The change also can result when pathogens, including virus species, either have modified the opportunist or attacked the host’s protective natural microflora. The authors discuss these opportunistic interactions and assess their outcomes in both aquatic as well as terrestrial ecosystems, highlighting the impact on plant, invertebrate and vertebrate hosts.
Book Synopsis Antimicrobial Agents and Intracellular Pathogens by : Didier Raoult
Download or read book Antimicrobial Agents and Intracellular Pathogens written by Didier Raoult and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-07-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antimicrobial Agents and Intracellular Pathogens is the first book devoted to the relationships among intracellular pathogens, antibiotics, and cells. The book is divided into two sections. Part One describes the effects of antibiotics on uninfected and infected phagocytic cells, the subcellular location of antibiotic compounds, the subcellular compartment of intracellular microorganisms multiplication, and the vectorization of antibiotics. Part Two focuses on intracellular pathogens used as paradigms, including strict intracellular bacteria and antibiotics such as Chlamydia, Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Coxiella burnetii; facultative intracellular bacteria and antibiotics such as Legionella and Mycobacteria; and intracellular protozoa and antimicrobial agents, such as Leishmania, Trypnonosoma, and Toxoplasma. This book will be an important reference for microbiologists, clinical microbiologists, infectious disease experts, and researchers in pharmaceutical companies involved in antibiotic development.
