Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between adolescent-parent congruence on the SCCT variables of college-going self-efficacy beliefs, college outcome expectations, and college decision-making in rural Appalachian youth. The study addressed three main research questions: What are the typical levels of adolescent-parent congruence, college-going self-efficacy, and college outcome expectations of rural Appalachian youth? How are college-going decisions impacted by the level of adolescent-parent congruence, college-going self-efficacy beliefs, and college outcome expectations of rural Appalachian youth? and How do rural Appalachian high school students say that adolescent-parent congruence impacts their college decisions? Participants in the study were high school seniors enrolled in five rural Appalachian high schools within a single Southeastern state. Data was collected through online surveys. Participants were asked to complete three scales: the Adolescent-Parent Career Congruence Scale-Revised (Sawitri et al., 2012), College Outcome Expectation Scale (Flores et al., 2008), and the College-Going Self-Efficacy Scale (Gibbons & Borders, 2010). Participants were also asked to answer two open response questions and complete a brief demographic scale. Findings indicated that rural Appalachian youth have a moderate amount of congruence with their parents regarding postsecondary plans, moderately high levels of college-going self-efficacy, and high levels of college outcomes expectations. High positive correlations were found between each of these three variables. In addition, multiple variables were found to predict students' adolescent-parent congruence including college-going self-efficacy, college outcome expectations, mother's educational level, and gender. Finally, while students reported moderate levels of adolescent-parent congruence on the quantitative measure, they demonstrated increased incongruence when asked about incongruence in an open-ended format. Based on these findings, implications for future research, counselors, and counselor educators were provided.

Book excerpt: Purpose The major purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self concept upon parent-adolescent communication patterns. Parental self concepts and the self concepts of their adolescent along with the adolescent's perceived quality of communication with their parents were examined to determine if (1) the parents' self concepts have a significant effect upon the adolescent's perceived communication with his parents, (2) the adolescent's self concept has a significant effect upon his perceived communication with his parents, (3) gender has a significant effect upon perceived communication patterns, and (4) the self concepts of the parents have a significant effect upon the self concept of the adolescent. Procedure The population consisted of 18 year old male and female university freshmen from two-parent, middle socioeconomic class families. A random sample of these students were assumed to be present in the lower division personal health classes at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon. A total of 152 adolescents and their respective parents comprised the sample for the study. Names, addresses, and demographic data were obtained from an information questionnaire. The adolescents were given The Tennessee Self Concept Scale and The Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory to obtain measurements of self concept and perceived communication with parents respectively. Parents were mailed a Letter of Explanation and The Tennessee Self Concept Scale. Sample return comprised 89.4 percent. The Total Positive Scores from the TSCS were categorized into quartiles labeled high, medium-high, medium-low, and low self concept. The data were subjected to two and three-way analysis of variance factoral designs. The factors were fixed and the cell sizes were unequal. Findings 1. Combined parental self concept seems to have had no effect upon the adolescent's perceived communication with parents. 2. The adolescent's self concept appears to have had a significant effect upon his perceived communication with parents at the .01 level. Those adolescents who had low self concept perceived communication with their parents as significantly more nonconstructive than those adolescents who had higher self concepts. 3. There was no significant difference between adolescent males and females in their perceived communication with their parents. 4. The mother's self concept appeared to significantly influence her daughter's perceived communication with her parents at the .05 level. Medium-low self concept mothers had daughters who perceived communication with their parents as significantly more non-constructive than daughters of high and medium-high self concept mothers. 5. The father's self concept did not appear to affect his daughter's perceived communication with parents. 6. Neither the mother's nor the father's self concept seemed to have any effect upon the son's perceived communication with parents. 7. Even when controlled for sex, the self concepts of the parents had no measurable effect upon their adolescent's self concept. Discussion of the findings included suggestions for study replication with design variations including controls for mother's educational level and specific changes in procedure and instruments. Consideration was given to the possibility of sex role influences upon communication patterns. Implications for education, especially in the areas of human sexuality and family living as well as for family counselors in experimental and applied areas, were presented.

Book excerpt: The main concern of this study is how parental decision-making style affects children's self-esteem and locus of control. A secondary longitudinal study was employed to investigate how parental decision-making style, which was broken into three categories-- collaborative, independent, and autocratic-- affects children's self-esteem and locus of control. Sex and ethnicity were also examined for their effects on parental decision-making style as well as on self-esteem and locus of control. The results showed that, contrary to what I predicted, the more frequent the use of independent decision-making relative to collaborative decision-making, the lower the child's self-esteem and locus of control. However, as I predicted, the more frequent the use of autocratic decision-making relative to collaborative decision-making, the lower the child's self-esteem and locus of control. It was also found that sex and ethnicity interact in their effect on parental decision-making style. White male adolescents are more likely than White females to have either independent decision-making or autocratic decision-making relative to collaborative decision-making. Asian male and female adolescents have no apparent differences in parental decision-making styles. Asian female adolescents are more likely than White female adolescents to show both independent and autocratic decision-makings relative to collaborative decision-making. White male adolescents are more likely than Asian male adolescents to have independent decision-making relative to collaborative decision-making. White male adolescents and Asian male adolescents show no differences in the frequency of autocratic decision-making relative to collaborative decision-making. Male adolescents have a higher level of self-esteem than female adolescents, while female adolescents have a higher level of internal locus of control than male adolescents. No differences were found in White Americans' and Asian Americans' self-esteem or locus of control. Limitations and applications were also discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation developed a comprehensive model conceptualizing the factors affecting children's choice of influence strategy and relative influence in family consumption decisions. In particular, the model asserted that antecedent variables (i.e., family variables, individual characteristics of children, individual characteristics of parents, and parent-child interdependence) affect both directly and indirectly children's choice of influence strategy and relative influence. Process variables (i.e., family socialization and power structure) mediate the effects of the antecedent variables. In addition, effects of family socialization and power structure on children's choice of influence strategy and subsequent relative influence vary with the product type, decision stage, and subdecision. Finally, children's relative influence is also dependent on their choice of influence strategy. An empirical study was advanced to partially test the model. Specifically, relationships among family socialization, power structure, children's choice of influence strategy, and their relative influence were empirically examined. A field experimental interaction procedure was designed for data collection from parent/child dyads. Multiple regressions were conducted to analyze the data. Results showed moderate support to the hypothesized relationships. However, most links in the testing model presented significant results. It appears that the integration of consumer socialization theory and power relational theory provides better explanation to children's influence behavior than either theory does individually.

Over time, early adolescents may feel stressed as they engage in frequent tasks they consider to be hassles, which may increase their risk for poor psychological functioning. Research has established positive links between daily hassles in early adolescence and anxious and depressive symptoms over time. Given the unique developmental changes and important role of parents during early adolescence, it is warranted to consider whether communication influences adolescents' anxious and depressive symptoms in the context of experiencing daily hassles. Accordingly, it is important to further examine how interpersonal coping processes may be communicated within these interactions and its influence on adolescents' psychological symptoms during stressful times. Thus, it was hypothesized that open parent-adolescent communication and co-problem-solving would have negative links to later symptoms, whereas co-rumination would demonstrate positive associations. The moderating influence of these parenting variables and adolescent gender, were subsequently explored. In this study, 400 early adolescents (M age = 12.30; SD = 0.98; 50% female; 55% Caucasian) completed online self-report questionnaires in classrooms at two time points, five months apart. Partial correlations controlling for participants' gender, minority status, and family standard of living determined positive associations between daily hassles and adolescents' depressive symptoms five months later. Both open communication (OC) and co-problem-solving with mothers and fathers, separately, were negatively correlated to later anxious symptoms. Only father-adolescent OC was negatively associated with adolescent depressive symptoms over time. Unexpectedly, co-rumination with fathers, but not mothers, was negatively associated with adolescents' subsequent later anxious symptoms. No significant links were found between co-rumination with either parent and depressive symptoms. To examine the moderating influence of parent-adolescent OC and interpersonal coping processes (i.e., co-problem-solving, co-rumination) on the association between daily hassles and adolescents' later anxious and depressive symptoms, regression analyses with interaction terms included were run separately for each type of parent, communication variable, and symptom outcome. Most interactions were not significant, but mother-adolescent co-rumination was found to moderate the link between daily hassles and anxious symptoms five months later, such that the association strengthened in a negative direction when co-rumination with mothers was low. Adolescent gender was added to regression analyses to explore whether it acted as an additional moderator; however, no significant interactions with gender were supported. Developmental and clinical implications of links between parent-adolescent OC and interpersonal coping processes influencing later adolescent psychological functioning are discussed. Furthermore, implications of low mother-adolescent co-rumination as a protective factor to the development of symptoms during times of stress are explored.
