Book excerpt: Unmatched by other books on the market, this edition of Guiding Children's Social Development, provides a solid foundation of up-to-date theory and research that will strengthen the reader's understanding of how children, birth to twelve years of age, develop and learn within the social domain. It describes successful ways to translate information in practical settings within learning environments, and offers teaching techniques to increase practitioner effectiveness. With sound principles of theory and practice, the book creates a framework for interpreting children's behavior and for implementing appropriate strategies to enhance children's social competence. This direction will assist professionals and educators to work with children and families from all backgrounds and circumstances, and help them support and accomplish goals together.

Book excerpt: In this book, psychologists explore the range of emotions children feel during moral transgressions, how and why acts of victimization become emotionally charged, what the emotions can tell researchers about people who become routine victimizers and those who learn to inhibit victimizing behaviors, and whether victimization is primarily affective, or cognitive abilities also play a major role. They cover theoretical foundations; factors from neuroscience to culture that influence aggression and morality; and assessment, interventions, and clinical perspectives. Among specific topics are emotion in early conscience, callous-unemotional traits and aggression in youth, and a cognitive-emotional model for the etiology of youth violence.

Book excerpt: The conference on which this volume is based was one of a series of symposia initiated by the Department of Psychology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on the theory and research surrounding topics of interest to the faculty and germane to the Hawaiian community. In order to encourage interaction around specific themes, the symposium series has assembled a small, select group of scholars to exchange knowledge, ideas, and enthusiasm with the resident faculty, students, and the community at large. The first two symposia concentrated on cross-cultural themes (Marsella, Tharp, & Ciborowski, 1979; Marsella, DeVos, & Hsu, 1985). The third one addressed a significant social problem: aggression and violence in children. At the time that our plan was being developed, Hawaii, along with mainland states, was experiencing or at least expressing widespread alarm over the involvement of children and youth in violent crime, in belligerence at school, as perpetrators of aggression at home, and as victims of physical abuse. This symposium was planned around a major area within the department, the Clinical Studies Program. The Clinical Studies Program has developed along two interrelated lines of concentration: one emphasized the foundation of clin cical psychology in basic science and the other expanded its purview into the broader community, covering prevention, systems change, and social networks.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has consistently studied environmental and biological risk factors for violence. However, recent studies have begun to examine the contribution of both biological and environmental predispositions to aggressive behavior. While there is a growing body of research examining biosocial influences, there has been a distinct lack of comprehensive research exploring the influence of parent-child interaction factors on the relationship between autonomic arousal and aggression. The current study addressed this issue by examining inconsistent discipline and parental involvement as moderators in the relationship between autonomic arousal (specifically sympathetic versus parasympathetic arousal at rest and during a task) and reactive versus proactive aggression. Data were collected from a sample of fourth graders identified as at-risk for aggression (N= 360). Inconsistent discipline was found to be a significant moderator in ten of the sixteen tested models and either gender or race acted as an additional moderator in seven of these models. Parental involvement was not a significant moderator in any of the tested models. Results demonstrated that children exhibiting both proactive and reactive aggressive behaviors may demonstrate heighted or diminished autonomic arousal patterns, but level of arousal depends on contextual and demographic factors (specifically gender, race, and the level of inconsistent discipline). By examining the influence of environmental factors on the relationship between autonomic arousal and different types of aggression, we may be better able to understand under which circumstances children with reactive versus proactive aggression exhibit heightened or reduced arousal patterns.
