Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inflammable Gases in Mine Air Samples of mine air have been obtained from many mines, in the main returns, splits, and entries, in places where the air was moving, and also in places where the air was still, as at working faces, cavities in the roof, in the goave, and in sealed inclosures. In addition, samples have been collected from parts of mines that were on fire and from mines shortly after explosions had occurred. Consequently, an excel lent opportunity has been afforded to study mine gases that have accumulated under many different conditions. Some results of this study are presented in the following paper which is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to a better knowledge of the causes of mine explosions.
