Book excerpt: The Indiscreet Jewels (or The Indiscreet Toys, or The Talking Jewels, French: Les bijoux indiscrets) is the first novel by Denis Diderot, published anonymously in 1748. It is an allegory that portrays Louis XV as the sultan Mangogul of the Congo who owns a magic ring that makes women's genitals ("jewels") talk. Plot Summary : Sultan Mangogul of Congo is bored of court life and suspects his mistress Mirzoza of infidelity. Happily for him, a genie presents him with a magical ring with unique properties. When the ring is rubbed and pointed at the genitals of any woman in the vicinity, the genitals ("discreet jewels") begin speaking of their past amorous experiences to the confusion and consternation of their owner. The Sultan uses the ring in this manner about thirty times - usually at a dinner or a social meeting; on these occasions, the Sultan is typically visible to the woman. However, since the ring has the additional property of making its owner invisible when required, a few of the sexual experiences recounted are through direct observation with the Sultan making himself invisible and placing his person in the unsuspecting woman's boudoir.

Book excerpt: "Philosopher, critic, novelist, and editor of the monumental Encyclopedie, Denis Diderot was one of the eighteenth century's most influential and provocative figures. For the first time complete in English translation, The Indiscreet Jewels is the earliest and, perhaps, most daring of Diderot's "philosophical" novels - a fearessly libertine fable on the order of such ribald classics as Boccaccio and Rabelais." "Published in 1748, with three chapters added later in the author's career, this extraordinary fiction is a take-off on the erotic-oriental tales popular at the time. Set in a sultan's court in the Congo, the novel begins with Mangogul (the Sultan) suffering from acute boredom, only to be rescued by a genie offering the potentate a magic ring that, when pointed at women, causes their genitals, or "jewels," to speak. The resulting story, exuberant and delightful in its wit and satire, was so openly irreverent and critical of the French Court at Versailles - with the Sultan as Louis XV and his favorite as Mme de Pompadour - that it secured its author some egregious trouble with the Parisian authorities." "But The Indiscreet Jewels is far from being just a political roman a clef. The Sultan's "scientific method" reveals an allegory of the female body, perennially silent, at last recovering its voice and daring to speak. What the "jewels" say is at once a parody and supreme example of the French Enlightenment's urge to seek knowledge above and beyond the hypocrisies, inhibitions, and limitations of everyday life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: The Talking Jewels (1748) is an erotic novel by Denis Diderot. Although he is known as a leading radical philosopher of 18th century France, Diderot also pursued a brief career as an anonymous author of controversial works of fiction. The Talking Jewels, his most famous erotic creation, is thought to have been inspired by the life of Madame de Pompadour, the favorite mistress of Louis XV. Bored with his life as Sultan of Congo, Mangogul longs for a distraction. Certain that his mistress Mirzoza has been cheating on him, he seeks the assistance of a powerful genie. With one of his wishes, Mangogul acquires a magic ring that gives him the ability to learn the sexual secrets of any woman he chooses. By rubbing the ring and pointing it toward the genitals, it grants them the power to speak and to reveal in graphic detail the romantic encounters of the past. Much to the embarrassment of these women, the talking jewels are often activated in the company of Mangogul's illustrious guests, who listen in shock to the secrets of their lustful lives. The Talking Jewels is a masterful erotic tale that plays on the prejudices and traditions of civilized society while humorlessly critiquing the stuffy morals of France's political, religious, and cultural elite. By portraying Mirzoza in a positive light, Diderot likely earned the respect of Madame de Pompadour, who helped secure funding for his influential and controversial Encyclopédie project. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Talking Jewels is a classic of French erotic literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: Hiaouf Zeles Tanzai had already reigned long in great Chechianea, and this voluptuous prince still continued to be the delight of his subjects. Acajou king of Minutia had undergone the fate predicted by his father: Zulmis was no more: the Count De -- was still living: Splendidus, Angola, Misapouf and some other potentates of the Indies and Asia were carried off by sudden deaths. The people tired of obeying weak sovereigns, had shaken off the yoke of their posterity; and the descendants of those unfortunate monarchs rambled unknown, or not regarded, in the provinces of their empires. The grandson of the illustrious Scheherazad was the only one who maintain'd his throne: and he was obeyed in Indostan by the name of Schach Baam, at the time when Mangogul was born in Congo. Thus it appears, that the death of several sovereigns was the mournful epoch of his birth. His father Erguebzed did not summon the Fairies round the cradle of his son; because he had observed, that most of the princes of his time, who had been educated by these female intelligences, were no better than fools. He contented himself with ordering his nativity to be calculated by one Codindo, a person fitter for a portrait than an acquaintance.

Book excerpt: Irresistibly charming or shamelessly deceitful, remarkably persuasive or uselessly verbose, everything one loves to hate — or hates to love — about “French lovers” and their self-styled reputation can be traced to eighteenth-century libertine novels. Obsessed with strategies of seduction, endlessly speculating about the motives and goals of lovers, the idle aristocrats who populate these novels are exclusively preoccupied with their erotic lives. Deprived of other battlefields in which to fulfill their thirst for glory, libertine noblemen seek to conquer the women of their class without falling into the trap of love, while their female prey attempt to enjoy the pleasures of love without sacrificing their honor. Yet, in spite of the licentious mores of the declining Old Regime, men and women are still expected to pay lip service to an austere code of morals. Asked to constantly denounce their own practices, they find that their erotic war games are thus governed by a double constraint: whatever they feel or intend, the heroes of libertine literature can neither say what they mean nor mean what they say. The Libertine Reader includes all the varieties of libertine strategies: from the successful cunning of Mme de T– in Denon’s No Tomorrow to the ill-fated genius of Mme Merteuil in Laclos’s Dangerous Liaisons; from the laborious sentimental education of Meilcour in Crébillon fils’s Wayward Head and Heart to the hazardous master plan of the French ambassador in Prévost’s The Story of a Modern Greek Woman. The discrepancies between the characters’ words and their true intentions — the libertine double entendre — are exposed through the speaking vaginas in Diderot’s Indiscreet Jewels and the wandering soul of Amanzei in Crébillon fils’s Sofa, while the contrasts between natural and civilized — or degenerate — erotics are the subjects of both Diderot’s Supplement to Bougainville’s Voyage and Laclos’s On the Education of Women. Finally, Sade’s Florville and Courval shows that destiny itself is on the side of libertinism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What induced the British to adopt foreign coffee-drinking customs in the seventeenth century? Why did an entirely new social institution, the coffeehouse, emerge as the primary place for consumption of this new drink? In this lively book, Brian Cowan locates the answers to these questions in the particularly British combination of curiosity, commerce, and civil society. Cowan provides the definitive account of the origins of coffee drinking and coffeehouse society, and in so doing he reshapes our understanding of the commercial and consumer revolutions in Britain during the long Stuart century. Britain’s virtuosi, gentlemanly patrons of the arts and sciences, were profoundly interested in things strange and exotic. Cowan explores how such virtuosi spurred initial consumer interest in coffee and invented the social template for the first coffeehouses. As the coffeehouse evolved, rising to take a central role in British commercial and civil society, the virtuosi were also transformed by their own invention.

Book excerpt: The Age of Enlightenment of the 18th century, also called the Age of Reason, was so named for an intellectual movement that shook the foundations of Western civilization. In championing radical ideas such as individual liberty and an empirical appraisal of the universe through rational inquiry and natural experience, Enlightenment philosophers in Europe and America planted the seeds for modern liberalism, cultural humanism, science and technology, and laissez-faire Capitalism This volume brings together works from this era, with more than 100 selections from a range of sources. It includes examples by Kant, Diderot, Voltaire, Newton, Rousseau, Locke, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Paine that demonstrate the pervasive impact of Enlightenment views on philosophy and epistemology as well as on political, social, and economic institutions.
