Being a narrative of two years' residence in the Eastern Himlaya and two months' tour in the Interior. By a Lady Pioneer, Nina Mazuchelli. "Would you see Nature in all her savage grandeur? Then follow me to her wildest solitudes-the home of the yak, and the wild deer, the land of the citron, and the orange, the arctic lichen, and the pine-where, in deep Alpine valley, rivers cradled in gigantic precipices, and fed by icy peaks, either thunder over tempest-shattered rock, or sleep to the music of their own lullaby-even to the far East, amongst the Indian Alps. . . ." Illustrated with a map, 10 very fine chromolithograph plates and over 140 text illustrations showing the scenery, people and the experiences of the mountaineering party. This classic of mountaineeering literature also contains much on the people and scenery of the Himalayas. The writer was the first Englishwoman to have travelled so far into the Himalayas.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Alps and How We Crossed Them: Being a Narrative of Two Years Residence in the Eastern Himalaya and Two Months Tour Into the Interior The following pages were written principally in India, and sent home at short intervals for the exclusive perusal of a family circle. They make no pretension to a scientific character, the little band of travellers who ven tured with me into the interior of the Eastern Himalaya having done so, not for the purpose of scientific research, but simply to explore an almost unknown country, and to enjoy the incidents of travel. Neither do they pre tend to give any adequate conception of the magnificence of the scenery of that vast mountain region, for in truth its beauty and grandeur are alike beyond all power of description. Book excerpt: Discourses of Difference unravels the complexities of writings by British women travellers of the `high colonial' period. Sara Mills examines the relation of women travellers to colonialism, positioned as they were at the site of conflicting discourses: femininity, feminism, and patriarchal imperialism. Using feminist discourse theory, Sara Mills analyses the writings of three women travellers - Alexandra David-Neel, Mary Kingsley and Nina Mazuchelli. Her examination of agency, identity, and the contemporary social environment, is an important and inspiring step forward in post-colonial cultural and literary theory.

Book Synopsis In Nature's Name by : Barbara T. Gates
Download or read book In Nature's Name written by Barbara T. Gates and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-04 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, hundreds of British women wrote about and drew from nature. Some—like the beloved children's author Beatrix Potter, who produced natural history about hedgehogs as well as fiction about rabbits—are still familiar today. But others have all but disappeared from view. Barbara Gates recovers these lost works and prints them alongside little-known pieces by more famous authors, like Potter's field notes on hedgehogs, reminding us of better known stories that help set the others in context. The works contained in this volume are as varied as the women who produced them. They include passionate essays on the protection of animals, vivid accounts of travel and adventure from the English seashore to the Indian Alps, poetry and fiction, and marvelous tales of nature for children. Special features of the book include a detailed chronology placing each selection in its historical and literary context; biographical sketches of each author's life and works; a comprehensive bibliography of primary and secondary literature; and over sixty illustrations. An ideal introduction to women's powerful and diverse responses to the natural world, In Nature's Name will be treasured by anyone interested in natural history, women, or Victorian and Edwardian Britain.
Download or read book Burning the Dead written by David Arnold and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burning the Dead traces the evolution of cremation in India and the South Asian diaspora across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Through interconnected histories of movement, space, identity, and affect, it examines how the so-called traditional practice of Hindu cremation on an open-air funeral pyre was culturally transformed and materially refashioned under British rule, following intense Western hostility, colonial sanitary acceptance, and Indian adaptation. David Arnold examines the critical reception of Hindu cremation abroad, particularly in Britain, where India formed a primary reference point for the cremation debates of the late nineteenth century, and explores the struggle for official recognition of cremation among Hindu and Sikh communities around the globe. Above all, Arnold foregrounds the growing public presence and assertive political use made of Hindu cremation, its increasing social inclusivity, and its close identification with Hindu reform movements and modern Indian nationhood.
Book Synopsis An Anthology of Women's Travel Writing by : Shirley Foster
Download or read book An Anthology of Women's Travel Writing written by Shirley Foster and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology aims to challenge stereotypes of women travellers. Rather than simply presenting writings by Victorian women who travelled bravely around the world disregarding social convention and danger, the editors present a range of writing and possible ways of being a woman traveller. As well as the 'eccentric' woman traveller, the editors have included writings by those who might be seen as failed travellers, cautious and conventional travellers and those who did not conform to the adventurous heroine stereotype. Because travelling as a woman and writing as a woman presents the author with a number of textual problems which must be negotiated, Foster and Mills have chosen to include writings which confronted these problems and which resolved them (or did not resolve them) in different ways. These textual problems include the depiction of other women, the representation of spatial relations, the negotiations undertaken in relation to the adventure heroine narrative and character and the position taken by the author in relation to the representation of knowledge. These issues are all crucial in relation to travel writing by women , and the women, whose writing has been collected together in this anthology have made bold decisions in relation to them.
