Book excerpt: An oral biography that reveals the Southern author's true voice Pat Conroy's memoirs and autobiographical novels contain a great deal about his life, but there is much he hasn't revealed to readers—until now. My Exaggerated Life is the product of a special collaboration between this great American author and oral biographer Katherine Clark, who recorded two hundred hours of conversations with Conroy before he passed away in 2016. In the spring and summer of 2014, the two spoke for an hour or more on the phone every day. No subject was off limits, including aspects of his tumultuous life he had never before revealed. This oral biography presents Conroy the man, as if speaking in person, in the colloquial voice familiar to family and friends. This voice is quite different from the authorial style found in his books, which are famous for their lyricism and poetic descriptions. Here Conroy is blunt, plainspoken, and uncommonly candid. While his novels are known for their tragic elements, this volume is suffused with Conroy's sense of humor, which he credits with saving his life on several occasions. The story Conroy offers here is about surviving and overcoming the childhood abuse and trauma that marked his life. He is frank about his emotional damage—the depression, the alcoholism, the divorces, and, above all, the crippling lack of self-esteem and self-confidence. He also sheds light on the forces that saved his life from ruin. The act of writing compelled Conroy to confront the painful truths about his past, while years of therapy with a clinical psychologist helped him achieve a greater sense of self-awareness and understanding. As Conroy recounts his time in Atlanta, Rome, and San Francisco, along with his many years in Beaufort, South Carolina, he portrays a journey full of struggles and suffering that culminated ultimately in redemption and triumph. Although he gained worldwide recognition for his writing, Conroy believed his greatest achievement was in successfully carving out a life filled with family and friends, as well as love and happiness. In the end he arrived at himself and found it was a good place to be.

Book excerpt: This work presents a complete history of psychoanalysis from its origins in 19th-century medical science to the end of the 20th century. The origins of psychoanalysis as well as the more immediate influences on Freud are explored, as is the way the discipline he founded has developed and changed.Joseph Schwartz first lays out the late Victorian approaches to mental illness and health and explains the context in which Freud's revolution took place. He traces the evolution of Freud's own thought, then shows how and why the rifts and shifts in the analytic community occurred. He then focuses on Freud's colleagues, rivals, successors and detractors - Jung, Adler, Sullivan, Melanie Klein, Erich Fromm to name a few. For once we see how the different schools and interpretations fit together - how they grew in response to each other, and what separate contributions each pioneer made over the last hundred years to create an effective understanding of the world of human subjective experience.

Book excerpt: An Exotic Heir Weaving a web of revenge can be satisfying, but dangerous to your heart. London society is shallow and cruel, sending Cassandra Renwick running to Calcutta, the exotic seat of the British Raj. It’s a fascinating place filled with interesting sights – including the dark and mysterious Julian Ritchie. But she never thought that an even greater heartbreak could be here in this alien and enchanting land. Julian has always been discriminated against for being only half English. Embittered, he plots an intricate plan for vengeance with the innocent and lovely Cassandra as his pawn. But he soon finds that payback can be painful for the avenger as well when the threads of revenge unwittingly turn into the silken bonds of love. A Rake's Reward A treasure lost… American Sara Whately came to England with a single goal: recover a long-lost family treasure. Her father had long ago renounced his title and abandoned his country, but desperate financial straits call for desperate measures. Gaining access won’t be easy. The jewels are hidden on an estate Sara’s grandfather lost long ago in an unlucky turn of the cards. And then there’s the vexing, villainous, valiant Viscount Reath… A jewel of a woman… Sinclair Stratton, Lord Reath has always gotten everything he wants—money, privilege, and women. But after ten years in India, he’s returned to England, ready to make amends for his youthful follies. He plans to return his ill-gotten estate to its rightful owner but the man is impossible to find. And despite still being one of the most sought after rake’s in town, the bold American beauty he keeps encountering seems to be immune to his charms and dashing good looks. While Sara has promised to not just search for her grandfather's jewels, but make an attempt at fitting into society, it might just be that Viscount Reath is the treasure she actually needs. And a BONUS NOVELLA: Under the Mango Tree In 18th century Calcutta, Lakshmi Rai has grown up under and in the mango tree in her mother's garden. Escaping there from her chores every chance she gets, she hides amongst the branches to read and study, even though reading is unheard of—even forbidden—for a good Bengali girl. Only her brother knows and aids her in her passion for learning—until the day the Englishman comes into the garden and stood under her mango tree. Now all sorts of forbidden thoughts are entering her head—many of them having to do with the handsome Englishman, Lord Huntley, the man with blue-green eyes. But can a girl from a good Bengali family even dare to dream of such things? If she does, what else might be possible under the mango tree?

Book excerpt: Here we have Mr. Lang at his best. . . . The recollections, perhaps, are the best things in the book — of Stevenson, Dr. John Brown, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, all sympathetic, delicate, and perceptive in criticism, reticent to the point of shyness. But the lighter literary essays have that elusive humour of which we have spoken, even in a greater degree than the recollections, and in the " The Boy " Mr. Lang is almost rollicking — for Mr. Lang. This book is annotated with a rare extensive biographical sketch of the author, Andrew Lang, written by Sir Edmund Gosse, CB, a contemporary poet and writer. Contents: Preface Chapter I: Adventures Among Books Chapter Ii: Recollections Of Robert Louis Stevenson Chapter Iii: Rab’s Friend Chapter Iv: Oliver Wendell Holmes Chapter V: Mr. Morris’s Poems Chapter Vi: Mrs. Radcliffe’s Novels Chapter Vii: A Scottish Romanticist Of 1830 Chapter Viii: The Confessions Of Saint Augustine Chapter Ix: Smollett Chapter X: Nathaniel Hawthorne Chapter Xi: The Paradise Of Poets Chapter Xii: Paris And Helen Chapter Xiii: Enchanted Cigarettes Chapter Xiv: Stories And Story-Telling (From Strath Naver) Chapter Xv: The Supernatural In Fiction Chapter Xvi: An Old Scottish Psychical Researcher Chapter Xvii: The Boy Footnotes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the learned first gave serious attention to popular ballads, from the time of Percy to that of Scott, they laboured under certain disabilities. The Comparative Method was scarcely understood, and was little practised. Editors were content to study the ballads of their own countryside, or, at most, of Great Britain. Teutonic and Northern parallels to our ballads were then adduced, as by Scott and Jamieson. It was later that the ballads of Europe, from the Faroes to Modern Greece, were compared with our own, with EuropeanMärchen, or children’s tales, and with the popular songs, dances, and traditions of classical and savage peoples. The results of this more recent comparison may be briefly stated. Poetry begins, as Aristotle says, in improvisation. Every man is his own poet, and, in moments of stronge motion, expresses himself in song. A typical example is the Song of Lamech in Genesis—“I have slain a man to my wounding, And a young man to my hurt.” Instances perpetually occur in the Sagas: Grettir, Egil, Skarphedin, are always singing. In Kidnapped, Mr. Stevenson introduces “The Song of the Sword of Alan,” a fine example of Celtic practice: words and air are beaten out together, in the heat of victory. In the same way, the women sang improvised dirges, like Helen; lullabies, like the lullaby of Danae in Simonides, and flower songs, as in modern Italy. Every function of life, war, agriculture, the chase, had its appropriate magical and mimetic dance and song, as in Finland, among Red Indians, and among Australian blacks. “The deeds of men” were chanted by heroes, as by Achilles; stories were told in alternate verse and prose; girls, like Homer’s Nausicaa, accompanied dance and ball play, priests and medicine-men accompanied rites and magical ceremonies by songs. These practices are world-wide, and world-old. The thoroughly popular songs, thus evolved, became the rude material of a professional class of minstrels, when these arose, as in the heroic age of Greece. A minstrel might be attached to a Court, or a noble; or he might go wandering with song and harp among the people. In either case, this class of men developed more regular and ample measures. They evolved the hexameter; the laisse of the Chansons de Geste; the strange technicalities of Scandinavian poetry; the metres of Vedic hymns; the choral odes of Greece. The narrative popular chant became in their hands the Epic, or the mediaeval rhymed romance. The metre of improvised verse changed into the artistic lyric. These lyric forms were fixed, in many cases, by the art of writing. But poetry did not remain solely in professional and literary hands. The mediaeval minstrels and jongleurs (who may best be studied in Léon Gautier’s Introduction to his Epopées Françaises) sang in Court and Camp. The poorer, less regular brethren of the art, harped and played conjuring tricks, in farm and grange, or at street corners. The foreign newer metres took the place of the old alliterative English verse. But unprofessional men and women did not cease to make and sing.

TAG feels the professor has overstepped their agreement in regards to experimental research boundaries. To avoid further tension within D.A.R.C., the professor takes tenure at Dresden University to continue his research with nanorobotic technology. Professor Giovanni eventually discovers a way to enhance a nano procedure by remote switching. This breakthrough will directly change all areas of applied medical science and medicine. This research soon draws the attention from several governmental and private entities. It's not long before MI6 comes knocking on D.A.R.C.'s door informing them of the professors possible kidnapping. What comes to light as the action unfolds is that a hostile Middle Eastern corporation, along with a private mercenary agency, will do whatever it takes to acquire the professor's discovery. Their control of this technology has the potential to be worth more than their oil reserves within their country. TAG and Dutch race headlong into an explosive chase that will take them from Dresden, Monaco, Corsica and Marseille. With the stakes this high, there's nobody better to tackle this mission than TAG, along with his D.A.R.C. team.
