Book Synopsis The Economics of World War I by : Stephen Broadberry
Download or read book The Economics of World War I written by Stephen Broadberry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume offers a definitive new history of European economies at war from 1914 to 1918. It studies how European economies mobilised for war, how existing economic institutions stood up under the strain, how economic development influenced outcomes and how wartime experience influenced post-war economic growth. Leading international experts provide the first systematic comparison of economies at war between 1914 and 1918 based on the best available data for Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands. The editors' overview draws some stark lessons about the role of economic development, the importance of markets and the damage done by nationalism and protectionism. A companion volume to the acclaimed The Economics of World War II, this is a major contribution to our understanding of total war.
Book Synopsis The Consumer on the Home Front by : Hartmut Berghoff
Download or read book The Consumer on the Home Front written by Hartmut Berghoff and published by Studies of the German Historic. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'home front' gained currency during the First World War and was closely associated with the idea of 'total war' - it encapsulated the blurred lines between the armies fighting in the field and the civilian societies at home. It became one of the most consequential elements in Second World War strategic thinking, entailing an unparalleled degree of civilian mobilization. And the legacies of the home fronts reached far beyond 1945: the war became a crucial catalyst for broader social developments, including the emergence of mass consumer societies in the twentieth century. This volume explores the history of the home fronts in the Second World War from a comparative and transnational perspective, focusing on the role of the consumer and civilian morale in Nazi Germany, Japan, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. The volume covers a wide range of aspects. It compares the belligerents' efforts in securing civilian food and nutrition. It analyses the role of advertising and commercial entertainment in creating 'virtual consumption' to compensate for wartime hardships. It highlights fashion as a means of offering distraction and promoting promises of future consumption. And it enquires into the impact of the wartime consumer regimes on the post-war period and long-term developments. This collection of ground-breaking international research will advance scholarship at various levels. It will contribute to our understanding of the entanglements between war and society in the twentieth century. And it will introduce a more holistic transnational perspective that aims to integrate the Second World War into the thriving historiography on mass consumption.

Book Synopsis Ideas and Economic Crises in Britain from Attlee to Blair (1945-2005) by : Matthias M Matthijs
Download or read book Ideas and Economic Crises in Britain from Attlee to Blair (1945-2005) written by Matthias M Matthijs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period from 1945 to 2005, Britain underwent two deep-seated institutional transformations when political elites successfully challenged the prevailing wisdom on how to govern the economy. Attlee and Thatcher were able to effectively implement most of their political platforms. During this period there were also two opportunities to challenge existing institutional arrangements. Heath's 'U-turn' in 1972 signalled his failure to implement the radical agenda promised upon election in 1970, whilst Tony Blair’s New Labour similarly failed to instigate a major break with the 'Thatcherite' settlement. Rather than simply retell the story of British economic policymaking since World War II, this book offers a theoretically informed version of events, which draws upon the literatures on institutional path dependence, economic constructivism and political economy to explain this puzzle. It will be of great interest to both researchers and postgraduates with an interest in British economic history and the fields of political economy and economic crisis more widely.
Book Synopsis A Small Price to Pay by : Graham Broad
Download or read book A Small Price to Pay written by Graham Broad and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often picture life on the Canadian home front as a time of austerity, as a time when women went to work and men went to war. Graham Broad explodes this myth of home front sacrifice by bringing to light the contradictions of consumer society in wartime. Governments pressured Depression-weary citizens to save for the sake of the nation, but Canadians had money in their pockets, and advertisers tempted them with fresh groceries, glamorous movies, and new cars and appliances. Broad reveals that our "greatest generation" was not impervious to temptation but rather embarked on one of the biggest spending booms in our nation's history.
