Book excerpt: The study examined high school mathematics course enrollment patterns, college mathematic readiness, and post high school intentions during the planning and implementation of the Future Ready Core high school graduation requirements in North Carolina public school systems. Quantitative methodologies were utilized to describe the impact of the increased, uniformed high school graduation requirements with proportions and averages of graduates in the state of North Carolina of graduates completing three or more college preparatory math courses, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) math scale scores, and graduates indicating intent to attend a two or four-year college. Additionally, the study looked at the proportions and averages by district sized based subgroups (small, mid-sized, and large) for each indicator. The data sources included the entire population of North Carolina public high school graduates between 2008 and 2013. The study0́9s findings presented two major findings for school leaders. The implementation of the more uniform, rigorous Future Ready Core graduation requirements positively impacted the proportion of graduates completing three or more college preparatory course more immediately than previous new policies0́9 implementation; however, the substitution option was selected 16.39% of the time at the state level in 2013 with higher percentages in small and mid-size school districts. Additionally, the decrease in student performance on the SAT math assessment even with increases in college preparatory coursework requires school leaders to examine the quality of teaching and learning as well as potential unofficial tracking methods that may be occurring in the more uniform graduation requirements. Further research studies on the impact of the Future Ready Core graduation requirements could include analysis of total math coursework, repeating a similar study using ACT math composite scores after three graduating classes under the new requirements, or conducting a case study of districts who have had positive trend data while implementation the Future Ready Core graduation requirements as an exemplar for other school districts to follow.

Book excerpt: We explore the effects of a statewide policy change that increased the number of high school math courses required for admission to any of North Carolina's 15 public four-year institutions. Using administrative data on cohorts of 8th grade students from 1999 to 2006, we document and exploit variation by district over time in the math course-taking environment encountered by students. Within an instrumental variables setup, we examine effects of the policy change on students grouped into deciles defined by their 8th grade math test scores. First, we find that students took more math courses in high school following the state's announcement, with relatively larger increases in the middle and bottom deciles of students. Second, we conclude that increased math course-taking in high school led to increases in college enrollment rates that were not uniform across the 15 branch campuses. In particular, we observe the largest increases in the deciles of student achievement from which universities were already drawing the bulk of their enrollees. Finally, for upper-middle decile students, we find limited and noisy evidence that increased math course-taking in high school boosts post-enrollment college performance as measured by a student's GPA or the likelihood of majoring in a STEM field.

Book excerpt: In 2004, the Transition Mathematics Project (TMP), funded by the state of Washington and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to create projects to help high school students gain the necessary skills to become college and work-ready. Aligned to TMP's College Readiness Mathematics Standards, a fourth-year capstone mathematics course was developed and implemented, titled Applications in Mathematical Reasoning (AMR), a rigorous course option for students to take during their senior year of high school. The purpose of this study was to explore any relationship between taking the AMR course and preparation for college level mathematics. Using causal-comparative study design and matching participants in the sample, variables were examined based on the number of precollege courses taken; college level math course completed and grade earned; and placement test results for students who took the AMR course compared to those students who took no mathematics during their high school senior year. Though findings for precollege and college level course-taking were inconclusive, mathematics placement test scores were found to be significantly higher for those students who completed the AMR course. The placement test findings supported other research that links rigorous mathematics courses taken in high school with improved college placement and persistence. Based on the research examined and the study findings, there was support to consider the following: (a) creating alternate but rigorous math course offerings for the high school senior year; (b) striving toward a four-years of mathematics graduation requirement for all high schools; (c) enacting mandatory placement at the community college for students placing into precollege courses; and (d) reducing barriers to successful transition between high schools and post secondary institutions by fostering K-16 communication, aligning standards, and improving course alignment.

To receive funding from the Race to the Top, Tennessee educators and legislators implemented the Tennessee Diploma Project in 2009. The Tennessee Diploma Project increased graduation requirements for students in terms of coursework and assessments. Tennessee educators and legislators anticipated the increased graduation requirements would increase students’ achievement and ACT scores (college readiness skills). In mathematics, the graduation requirement increased from three high school math courses to four high school math courses: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and an upper-level math course. The purpose of this study was to investigate if a relationship existed between students’ ACT math subscores and the fourth mathematics class they completed in high school in Tennessee. In a sample of 674 students who graduated from a rural high school in Tennessee, the researcher conducted a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a Welch-Test ANOVA to analyze data from students’ transcripts. The researcher determined a statistically significant relationship existed between students’ ACT math subscores and the fourth mathematics class they completed in high school. The researcher acknowledged some students could have higher ACT math subscores than other students due to completing a particular fourth mathematics course in Tennessee high schools. The researcher encouraged educators to adjust their mathematics curriculum to maximize students’ performance and improve students’ college and career readiness skills.

Book excerpt: To better prepare students for college-level math and the demands of the labor market, school systems have tried to increase the rigor of students' math coursework. The failure of universal "Algebra for All" models has led recently to more targeted approaches. We study one such approach in Wake County, North Carolina, which began using prior test scores to assign middle school students to an accelerated math track culminating in eighth grade algebra. The policy has reduced the role that income and race played in course assignment. A regression discontinuity design exploiting the eligibility threshold shows that acceleration has no clear effect on test scores but lowers middle school course grades. Acceleration does, however, raise the probability of taking and passing geometry in ninth grade by over 30 percentage points, including for black and Hispanic students. Nonetheless, most students accelerated in middle school do not remain so by high school and those that do earn low grades in advanced courses. This leaky pipeline suggests that targeted math acceleration has potential to increase college readiness among disadvantaged populations but that acceleration alone is insufficient to keep most students on such a track.
