Book excerpt: Abstract: Over the past 30 years, the tourism industry in China has evolved from a fledgling state-run industry to become one of the shining stars of China's ongoing economic development. Travel agencies traditionally have had held a central role in China's tourism industry and have continually adapted and evolved to meet the needs of changing markets. The appearance of Ctrip, Elong and other online travel service providers beginning in 1999 marked the entrance of China's tourism industry into the Internet Age and was a catalyst for the adoption of E-marketing and E-commerce solutions in China. This trend has created a vast number of growth opportunities in China's tourism industry, while also bringing about many challenges for Chinese travel agencies. Through the analysis of several travel agencies in Chengdu, China, this paper examines the current state of Internet Tourism in China and explores the challenges facing Chinese travel agencies seeking to adopt an Internet tourism strategy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an insightful look into the great changes in the hospitality and tourism industry in China in recent years. The steady growth of the GDP in China, the increasing middle-income population, lifestyle changes of the Chinese people, and fast infrastructure development (speed trains, airports, highways, and seaports, linking many mega cities, mid-level cities, and townships) have all had a significant effect on the Chinese hospitality industry, which is booming in China. With much more money in their pockets, the Chinese are spending more than 60% of their disposable income on food and travel. International food and hotel chains have responded by increasing their presence in China, and in turn, new domestic restaurant and hotel chains have sprung up to compete for the business. With chapters by scholars from various universities in China and the United States, these issues and more are covered in this new volume. Readers will gain a true understanding of the current development of Chinese hospitality and tourism industry.

Book excerpt: This book aims to curate a collection of articles to showcase the latest work and biggest trends shaping the global tourism industry in the past two decades - new technology and the Chinese tourists. While the emergence of new technology continues to propel the evolution of the tourism industry, Chinese tourists as a dominating market have won increasing attention across worldwide destinations. On one hand, the vast advancement of technology has fundamentally shifted the way Chinese tourists travel. On the other hand, the arrival of technologically savvy Chinese tourists has provoked tourism providers and destinations to adopt innovative technology (e.g., mobile payment). Standing on the edge of the third decade of the twenty-first century, the tourism industry and scholarly community are facing unprecedented challenges amidst exciting opportunities. Particularly, this line of research is perhaps timelier than ever, with the pandemic physically distancing people whilst augmenting technology's function in mediating social interactions and connecting lives beyond geographic boundaries. New Technology and Mediated Chinese Tourists will be a great resource for researchers and students of Tourism and Hospitality including those interested to understand how innovation and technology is embedded in the tourism industry. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of China Tourism Research.
