Book Synopsis Independent review of police officer and staff remuneration and conditions by : Tom Winsor
Download or read book Independent review of police officer and staff remuneration and conditions written by Tom Winsor and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review began on 1 October 2010 and the reviewer, Tom Winsor, was asked to ensure that police pay and conditions and the structures around them are the best they could be given the challenges currently facing the police service. Budget cuts will see forces being required to achieve more with less, but also need to be fair to officers and staff. The review is to report in two parts, covering short-term and long-term improvements. This is Part one and covers: the deployment of officers and staff (including shift allowances, overtime and assisting other police forces); post and performance related pay (including special priority payments, competence related threshold payments for constables and bonuses at all ranks) and how officers leave the police service. Mr Winsor says his recommendations will produce savings of £485m over three years. The recommendations if implemented will concentrate the highest pay on the front line and more demanding roles in the police service. He says police earn 10 to 15% more than other emergency workers and the armed forces and in some areas they are paid up to 60% more than average local earnings. It also recommends making savings of £60m a year in overtime and he also suggests suspending chief officer and superintendent bonuses. The independent review calls for an end to the £1,212 competence-related threshold payment, the Special Priority Payment of up to £5,000 and says no officers should move up the pay scale for two years. The government is planning to cut its funding for the police by 20% by 2014-15. The 43 forces in England and Wales currently employ about 244,000 people, comprising 143,000 police officers and 101,000 civilians.

Book excerpt: Policing in the 21st century is becoming increasingly complicated as economic, political, social, and legal circumstances continue to compel police organizations to evolve. To illustrate the complexity of policing in the 21st century and cover themes common to police organizations around the world, Exploring Contemporary Police Challenges: A Global Perspective is organized into six sections, which cover the key policing challenges across the globe. Based on US President Barack Obama’s 2015 Task Force’s organization into six broad pillars, this volume contains contributions from policing experts focusing on Building Trust and Legitimacy; Providing Policy and Oversight; Utilizing Technology and Social Media; Developing Community Policing and Crime Reduction; Providing Police Training and Education; and Facilitating Officer Wellness and Safety. Scholarly analyses and discussions of these issues in 16 countries on 6 continents offer a global perspective on policing in the 21st century. This volume simultaneously enhances the scope of policing scholarship and demonstrates that no country can sidestep the need to adjust to these rapid and profound changes.

Book Synopsis The Path to the Shield by : Matthew Jamison
Download or read book The Path to the Shield written by Matthew Jamison and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Path to the Shield is a comprehensive guide for those individuals who desire a career in police work or are, at least, strongly considering this career field. Whether a potential applicant is in high school, college, or already in the workforce, there are a set of basic guidelines to which one should adhere in order to ensure the best chances of a police employment offer. The Path to the Shield is up-to-date in terms of its content but also stresses the basic tenets of policing, which are timeless in nature. This work outlines the specific steps that interested individuals need to take in their journey toward a policing career, as well as listing those things that should be carefully avoided. The Path to the Shield is a self-help book designed to prepare potential police officer applicants for this critically important role in our society. The actions of police officers in our great nation are seldom heralded and are very often criticized. The daily newspapers published throughout our land always mention accounts of policing actions, as do television news segments every evening. Due to the vital nature of this career field, it is of utmost importance that the very finest individuals make the decision to answer the calling to law enforcement and are properly guided through the process of getting themselves hired. Perhaps most importantly, The Path to the Shield describes the nature of police work in detail, to help potential applicants make an informed decision as to whether or not to actually apply to a police department. The unpleasant aspects of the job are detailed in this work, as are the positive and rewarding benefits of a policing career. The personal motivation of persons seeking to become police officers is discussed, as one's motives should be rooted in serving society and giving of themselves in this guardian role. This book is highly recommended for anyone even remotely considering a career in policing.

It traces the stories of African Americans' lives through landmark rulings such as Dred Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson, to social status changes through the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, Black Codes, Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, lynchings, incarceration and police brutality, and through to the more recent, notorious cases of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and George Floyd. It also sets out how this history has given a moral authority to, and legitimized the usage of, the phrase “Black Lives Matter”.
