If sexual contact (which has long been linked to relationship satisfaction) occurs after couple conflict, it may hasten post-conflict reconciliations by reducing negative emotions and behaviors and enhancing positive ones. The current study was designed to explore the effects of sexual experiences between romantic partners on their emotional recoveries from their conflicts, especially among romantic partners with higher levels of attachment insecurity. In a 3-week diary study, cohabiting couples (N=115) reported on their daily interactions with their romantic partners to address the following questions: (1) what is the impact of post-conflict sexual intimacy on couple partners’ moods and relationship satisfaction following conflict, and (2) what is the impact of sexual contact after conflict on the expected negative association between attachment insecurity and emotional recovery from conflict between romantic partners. Results indicated that sexual contact after conflict helps romantic partners regain their daily relationship satisfaction, but does not moderate the association between attachment insecurity and post-conflict recovery. Findings from this study can be applied in couple therapy, as it is the unresolved and lingering effects of conflicts that often bring individuals to marital counseling.

Book excerpt: Dyadic conflicts may emerge for a variety of reasons however some conflicts are viewed as more influential than others. Moral conflicts are viewed as particularly critical to relationships due to their possible intractable nature (Vallacher et al., 2010). The first goal of the current study was to examine theoretical perspectives from a variety of academic fields to identify the types of moral conflicts that are experienced in marriage. Secondly, this study addressed the perceived conflict management strategies used by a partner during a specific episode of moral conflict. Lastly, the study investigated how the communication strategies used during a moral conflict contributed to relational satisfaction. The present study surveyed 235 married individuals and found that individuals experienced ten types of moral conflict, some of which may be unique to marriage (e.g., loyalty, authority over assets of equal ownership, free will/determinism). Results also indicated that those who perceived their partner also thought the conflict had a moral nature, were more likely to see their viewpoint as superior, despite indicating that they were able to understand their partner’s position. In addition, those who thought that their partner had similar perceptions of the moral nature of a conflict felt that their partner displayed negative emotions during conflict (e.g., crying, depressed), but did not show behaviors attempting to avoid or deny the conflict. Lastly, individuals who perceived their partner as using integrative strategies were more satisfied with their relationship, whereas those who viewed their partner as using distributive strategies expressed lower levels of relational satisfaction. Findings also demonstrated that people felt less satisfied with their relationship when their partners used avoidance or denial during moral conflict and more satisfied with their relationship when their partner displayed expressions of negative affect. Implications about conceptualizing moral conflict in marriage are discussed as well as suggestions for future inquiry.

Book excerpt: Given the nature of couple conflict, couples are frequently tasked with mutually working towards a solution to a given problem. Effective conflict management is a key relationship resource that maintains closeness and cohesiveness (Epstein & Baucom, 2002; Overall & Simpson, 2013), whereas ineffective conflict management is generally associated with impaired relationship functioning (Gottman & Notarius, 2000; Overall & Fletcher, 2010). The overarching goal of the present thesis therefore consisted of further advancing the field's understanding of conflict management as an interpersonal process in heterosexual couple relationships. This goal was addressed through two novel and complementary studies. The sample for both studies consisted of 179 community-based heterosexual adult couples involved in a long-term romantic relationship. During the testing session, participants completed a questionnaire package and discussed a topic of disagreement for 15 minutes. These interactions were then coded for both positive and negative conflict management behaviours. Both studies modeled these conflict management behaviours alongside crucial variables involved in couple conflict. The first study examined the ways in which partners' adult romantic attachment orientations interact to predict their conflict management behaviours. As hypothesized, the results provide preliminary evidence that, in some cases, men's and women's conflict management depends on the interaction between their own and their partner's adult romantic attachment orientation, more so than a sole individual's attachment. The second study examined whether effective conflict management moderates the negative association between relationship satisfaction and men's and women's use of psychological partner aggression. Contrary to hypotheses, the results suggest that, in predicting these aggressive acts, relationship satisfaction and conflict management make fairly independent contributions. These findings are based on strong theoretical frameworks as well as a number of methodological strengths, including the observational coding of positive and negative conflict management behaviours and the implementation of sophisticated dyadic data analyses. Furthermore, by filling gaps in the existing literature, these findings offer several theoretical, empirical, and clinical implications for the field of couple conflict. As individual and collective bodies of work, the studies of the present thesis provide invaluable evidence in support of the complex and interdependent nature of couple relationships. Such findings are highly relevant to couple researchers and clinicians alike, both of whom endeavour to understand and improve couple relationship functioning.

Book excerpt: "In the current study I examined the impact of enduring vulnerabilities (neuroticism and trait anger) and maladaptive relationship behaviors (hostile conflict, aggression, dishonesty, sexual dishonesty) on both concurrent and longitudinal relationship satisfaction. As guided by the Vulnerability-Stress-Adaptation Framework (Karney & Bradbury, 1995), I examined models in which relationship behaviors were tested as potential mediators between enduring vulnerabilities and relationship satisfaction. In addition, I investigated moderation models in which maladaptive behaviors were allowed to interact with enduring vulnerabilities. To accomplish these goals, I conducted HLM analyses in two samples, a sample of 1833 married, engaged, and dating individuals followed for 1 year and a sample of 287 newlywed couples followed for 2 years. Consistent with my hypotheses, high levels of neuroticism, hostile conflict, aggression, dishonesty and sexual dishonesty all demonstrated associations with lower levels of concurrent relationship satisfaction, and with decreases in satisfaction over time. The findings surrounding trait anger were mixed and suggested both positive and negative associations between levels of trait anger and relationship functioning. Mediation models received virtually no support, with only one of the indirect effects tested reaching statistical significance, offering little evidence of mediation by relationship behaviors during this 1-2 year time-frame. The moderation results suggested two means through which enduring vulnerabilities and maladaptive behaviors interacted to impact relationship satisfaction. A majority of the longitudinal interactions revealed a negative synergy between maladaptive behaviors and maladaptive traits, suggesting that they might have been particularly toxic to relationships in combination. A majority of the cross-sectional interactions suggested that behavior which was inconsistent with one's personality (e.g., high levels of hostile conflict in an even-tempered individual) may have been particularly toxic to current relationship functioning. All of these results were significant after I controlled for race, education, length of relationship, presence of children, and premarital cohabitation. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify the association between conflict management style, self disclosure, and relational satisfaction. Due to the limited amount of research conducted to date concerning the association of all three concepts, the study was conducted to provide insight into the associations. Quantitative research methodology was utilized in this study. Three surveys were used to gather the data from the participants on how they viewed their conflict management style, self disclosure during conflict, relational satisfaction with both their mothers and their current or most recent romantic partner. The surveys were distributed throughout a large Midwestern University and 235 responses were received. Data from this study lent insight into the association between these three concepts. This data showed there were significant associations between conflict management styles used by mothers and romantic partners. Due to the limited research conducted prior to this study, the data also extended knowledge of the association between conflict management styles and self disclosure, suggesting that different conflict management styles yield different types of self disclosure (positive, negative, and uncertainty) during a conflict depending on if the conflict is with mother or romantic partner. Finally, the data suggested the type of self disclosure does not affect relational satisfaction in either a mother-child or romantic relationship.

Book excerpt: Subordinate goal conflict, the amount of conflict over lower goals in a goal hierarchy, can be understood as a function of degree and amount. These constructs in turn may affect negotiation strategies and relational satisfaction. Moreover, I hypothesized that issue recurrence (i.e., the extent to which partners’ subordinate goal conflict is brought to mind) moderate relational satisfaction. These explications were tested in a 2 (degree size: low and high) x 2 (amount size: low and high) x 2 (issue recurrence size: low and high) x 4 (topics: spending time together in person, long distance relational communication, binge drinking, and marijuana use) factorial design scenario method experiment. The results were mostly topic dependent, with subordinate goal conflict increasing distributive strategy in the topic of marijuana use and increasing integrative strategies in long distance relational communication. However, the indirect relationship between subordinate goal conflict and relational satisfaction, and the moderating effect of issue recurrence were mostly unsupported.
