Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bhakti Schools of Vedānta’, of which this volume is a part, is a work intended to bring to the notice of the general reader that it is not correct to equate Vedānta exclusively with Advaita Vedānta, associated with Śrī Śaṅkarācārya. There are several other Ācāryas who have expounded the Vedānta in quite a different way and whose status as teachers of Vedānta requires recognition. The personages treated in the above book are Sri Rāmānuja, Śrī Nimbārka, Śrī Vallabha, Śrī Madhva and Śrī Caitanya. Besides their theo-philosophies, detailed accounts of their lives are given. For it is the support of their lives that gives more authority to their teachings than the philosophical writings of mere armchair philosophers. The frame-work of their lives is mainly historical, but most of the miraculous and extraordinary incidents mentioned in them may largely be projections of the pious imaginations of their followers. These too are to be respectfully received and not pooh-poohed as mere cock and bull stories. It is the way of the Indian mind to convey the idea that these Ācāryas are endowed with extraordinary powers. But for this, their teachings could not have survived through so many centuries influencing the lives of innumerable generations of men.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Teachings of Sri Ramanujacharya The last stroke was still upon the air, when there came a knock at the study door, and roused the author from his deep reverie, back to the world and its sorrows. One more hour, cried-he, another messenger of Time, posting from the dark realms of the Future, on to the regions of the Dead Past. The world has grown older by an hour and I no wiser. With that, there strode into the room. All unbidden, the impatient visitor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Indira Parthasarathy's Tamil play Ramanujar, which won the K.K. Birla Foundation's Saraswati Samman in 1999, presents the medieval Vaishnava acharya not only as an exponent of the Visishtadvaidic philosophy but even more strikingly as a radical social reformer with an inclusive vision. The play strives to demonstrate that he redefined the very idea of a Vaishnava. The play also takes a balanced view of the hagiographic and historical accounts on the controversial events in his long life, such as Chola persecution, Ramanuja's exile, conversion of the Hoysala King from Jainism, and the meeting with the Delhi Sultan. The Epilogue, a playlet included in this new edition, presents an imaginary meeting of the aged renunciant with his long-separated wife. The searching questions she poses make the savant reflect upon and evaluate himself, his past and the impact he has made on society. The present translation of the play including the Epilogue, makes the work available to a wider audience. The Introduction and Commentary point out how Indira Parthasarathy employs the traditional hagiographic accounts as a critical tool to probe issues of social and religious amity and gender equity"--
