Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the appropriate leadership styles among school principles and its effects on teachers job satisfaction and motivation. In order to answer the research questions, the study adopted quantitative research methodology. Two questionnaires were used in order to gather the data on the leadership styles of school principals and teachers job satisfaction. The two questionnaires used were "Leadership Practice Inventory" developed by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner in the early 1980s, and "Factors Affecting Job Satisfaction, and Teacher Retention for Teachers" developed by Karen S. Myers Giacometti in November 8, 2005. The participants of this study were 200 teachers in 10 schools located in the Metn area. The findings significantly showed that teachers preferred working with a leader that motivated, encouraged, and was always there for them. Thus, the teachers preferred a leader with a mixture of transformational and transactional leadership style rather than the laissez faire one. Teachers perceived leaders with positive practices to have better effects on teachers motivation level and job satisfaction. As for the different demographic variables, statistics showed that each of the university degree, gender, and salary played a separate role depending on the given conditions. This study concluded with several recommendations given to school principals in order to improve the educational system, and their relationship with their teachers and staff members. Specifically, these recommendations contributed to the improvement and understanding of leadership styles in the Lebanese educational context.

Although efforts to recruit new teachers have proven successful, teachers are leaving education at alarming rates, especially in the first four years of their careers. The purpose of this study was to identify what school principals can do to increase teachers' job satisfaction and retention. To do so, 12 veteran teachers from four schools were interviewed from February to April 2009. The participants answered questions concerning their levels of job satisfaction, their perceptions of their principals' leadership styles, and their reasons for continuing to teach. The data revealed that principals can increase teachers' job satisfaction and retention rates by encouraging positive and respectful relationships among teachers and their students and among the faculty, staff, and administration; treating teachers as professionals and providing them with opportunities for professional growth; providing teachers with positive feedback; being accessible and listening to teachers; establishing high expectations for student achievement and teacher performance; and supporting the efforts of teachers. This data will increase principals' awareness about what leadership styles and practices can increase the job satisfaction of their teachers and help them retain highly qualified and effective teachers in their schools.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this mixed methodology case study was to determine the influence that leadership styles had on teacher job satisfaction. The study was conducted in two rural Title I Georgia districts, and the target population was 86 secondary teachers. The principals in the study completed the Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire that was used to determine their leadership styles. The teachers completed the Teacher Job Satisfaction and Retention Survey that yielded their job satisfaction levels in six categories. The categories were: rapport with principal, satisfaction with teaching, teacher responsibilities and workload, rapport with teachers, curricular and organizational issues, and retention. The teachers' job satisfaction ratings were compared to their principals' leadership styles. All surveys were mailed to the five participating secondary schools, which were three middle and two high schools. The quantitative data analysis that resulted from the leadership and teacher surveys were presented in narrative form with corresponding tables. The Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire consisted of 20-items. The principals' leadership styles were identified from the ordinal data. The teacher Job Satisfaction and Retention Survey consisted of 34-items that included demographic items. Also, the survey yielded the teachers' job satisfaction levels for the six survey categories. From the Teacher Job Satisfaction and Retention Survey data, 10 teachers were purposefully selected to participate in interviews. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews were conducted to explore the reasons why teachers were satisfied with their teaching positions at their current schools. The qualitative data from the interviews were analyzed by the researcher. The interview responses from all the teachers were categorized by recurring themes, related ideas, and responses pertinent to the purpose of the study. The intent of the analysis of the qualitative data was to further explore and identify the reasons why teachers were satisfied with their jobs. The findings from the quantitative portion of the study yielded that the directive leadership style was the most dominant. The more directive principals were, the higher the teachers' job satisfaction levels. In addition, the demographic data in the study were also used to identify job satisfaction levels. The data revealed that teachers who were teaching non-content related courses such as fine arts, physical education, and technical courses had higher job satisfaction levels. Also, teachers who had taught at their current schools for 16 or more years had a job satisfaction level of 3.14 on a four-point Likert scale. The qualitative findings of this study revealed that the reasons the teachers were satisfied teaching at their current schools was because their principals were very supportive. They provided the teachers with the necessary materials that they needed to perform their jobs effectively. In addition, the principals allowed their teachers to participate in making instructional decisions that affected the teachers directly. The teachers were also satisfied with the rapport that they had with their students. Educators enjoyed teaching their content and their students. Teachers believed that the strong positive relationships with their students and colleagues were also reasons why they enjoyed teaching at their current schools. The results of this study were pertinent to school districts that want to maintain a positive school culture and retain their current teachers.

Today there is much attention given to effective leadership, that without which organizations will find it difficult to survive. To be effective, leaders not only need technical skills but also people skills that can motivate the followers with understanding, sensitivity and prudence. In this study descriptive research method was used to determine the impact of the principals' leadership style on the teachers' job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The survey respondents in this study are 150 teachers in five Catholic schools in South India. Linear Regression analysis was used to evaluate the data. The results indicated that principals' tranformational leadership style positively influenced teachers' job satisfaction (B=0.214) and organizational commitment (B=0.162). In addition, the study also revealed that job satisfaction was positively related to organizational commitment (B=0.308).

Book excerpt: This qualitative study investigated the connection between the behaviors of principals and teacher job satisfaction and motivation, and how this connection results in increased teacher retention. Particularly, the researcher looked at what strategies principals use to motivate and encourage teachers to remain at a school. The researcher also examined teachers' primary reasons for staying at a particular school. Two urban high schools were the sites for this study. The researcher conducted both focus groups and interviews. Individual interviews were held with two principals; one principal had two years of experience and the other had seven years of experience. In addition, the researcher conducted individual interviews with three teachers from each school. One focus group at each school, each composed of three to four participants, also yielded data. The research showed that college education programs do not adequately prepare teachers to work with students and face the various challenges that often accompany them. Teachers need support in order to succeed as educators. The data revealed that the principal sets the tone and is the driving force of a school, thereby having a huge impact on the school environment. Though teachers were more likely to stay at schools where they felt a connection to their students, this study found that the principal is instrumental in teacher retention. The researcher found that though teachers believe they directly have control of many aspects of the school reality, the principal continues to orchestrate and facilitate school operations in an indirect, inclusive manner. The effective, invisible principal creates an environment where teachers are empowered and moved to the forefront, while the principal navigates from the background. The ability of the teacher to focus on teaching and learning is directly correlated with the principal's ability to maintain a safe and orderly environment, complete with the supports and recognition teacher need. These supports satisfy teachers' intrinsic needs, in turn resulting in increased job satisfaction and then increased teacher retention. The behaviors of the principal as they relate to teacher support, interest in the staff, and the principal's ability to motivate the staff all affect teachers' desire to stay.
