Book excerpt: Research indicates that administrative leadership is the most important factor in determining the climate of a school, and there are specific leadership attributes such as improving working conditions that promote retention. This study seeks to identify leadership behaviors that positively affect quality teacher retention among two particular groups (Beginning teachers with 1-3 years of experience and career teachers with 4+ years of experience) in the middle schools of North Carolina. A Fisher's Exact Test was performed on the data that were collected from the 22 leadership questions on the 2006 North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey. Ten of those questions were statistically significant at the 0.05 level. A Pearson Chi-Square was conducted to determine what working condition domain had the most impact on quality teacher retention for both beginning and career teachers. According to the findings of this study, there is a relationship between principal leadership and quality teacher retention, wherein different leadership attributes can be used as predictors for quality teacher retention. Book excerpt: Since 2002, North Carolina, under the leadership of Governor Mike Easley and the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Commission, has worked to improve understanding of a critical factor in student learning and teacher retention: the conditions under which teachers work. In 2006, 66 percent (more than 75,000) school-based licensed educators responded to the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey. More than 85 percent of the state's schools (1,985) reached the minimum response rate (40 percent) necessary to have valid data, providing information needed to gauge the successes and areas of concerns in their own schools and communities. Several trends can be discerned from the survey data: (1) Teacher working conditions in North Carolina have improved and conditions are better than in other states; (2) Teacher working conditions have an impact on teacher turnover; (3) Teachers and administrators view working conditions differently; (4) Teachers, particularly elementary educators, want more planning and collaborative time; (5) Teachers are positive about the facilities and resources available; (6) Teachers do not feel centrally involved in decision making; (7) Teachers are positive about leadership's ability to communicate, but want more support in addressing working conditions; (8) Teachers were positive about the professional development they received, but did not receive what they needed most; and (9) New teachers are generally positive about mentoring received, but many educators do not appear to be receiving any support. Book excerpt: This dissertation determined the congruence with the order of importance concerning what middle school teachers and middle school principals value regarding the behavioral characteristics of effective middle school principals and if a relationship exists between those characteristics and the 2006/2008 North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Surveys. The indications and suggestions of this research were based on the data collected from many different middle schools representing different geographical areas within a large school system located within the piedmont-triad central region of North Carolina. Information was obtained from different multi-question surveys from middle school teachers and principals, open-ended questions, and focus group interviews. This component of the study identified any common behavioral characteristics that the teachers and principals, at the same school, have of themselves with an order of importance. This information was compared to the 2006 and 2008 results of the North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Surveys information from the same middle schools to determine if a correlation existed between the total data collected. The results of this research indicated that the younger teachers with less teaching experiences wanted their principal to have the traits of a manager and an instructional leader. The older teachers with more teaching experiences wanted their principal to have the traits of one who uses people skills and one who has a vision. The principals see themselves primarily as instructional leaders.

Book excerpt: This report deals with the follow-up stage of a longitudinal study which examined socialization into teaching as reflected by teachers' attitudes towards the control of students. Preservice secondary school teachers were observed in their final year of training, and, in 1978, this "five years later" follow-up was conducted, investigating over half of the original sample. It was found that the initial year of teaching experience is clearly the most traumatic, and that the subsequent years tended to see a leveling out of attitudes towards students and teaching and an internalization of occupational values. This report provides information on: (1) the sample of beginning secondary school teachers; (2) career patterns of respondents to the 1978 survey; (3) use of student control ideology as an index of socialization into the occupation of teaching; (4) cross-sectional analyses of responses to the 1978 survey; (5) longitudinal analysis of responses from members of the 1978 sample who taught from 1973-1978 and comparisons with 1978 non-teaching group; and (6) a summary of followup interviews conducted (during 1979) with both teaching and non-teaching members of the 1978 sample. Book excerpt: School leadership instability is particularly problematic for scholars and practitioners concerned with PK-12 school improvement, as second only to teachers, campus leadership has been identified as a primary factor in students' academic success (Young et al., 2007). Yet, while principals play an indispensable role in students' academic success, the job has become considerably more stressful as the role of a school leader continues to evolve. Specifically, added responsibilities, increased work intensity, and the ever-present menace of high stakes accountability have intensified the stress levels encountered by today's school leaders (Carpenter & Brewer, 2012; Chaplain, 2001; Darmody & Smyth, 2016; Wang, et al., 2018). This intensification negatively impacts a school’s teaching staff and its students, as the overall quality of the school experience can deteriorate if principals are unable to meet their potential due to the burnout and fatigue associated with chronic stress (Darmody & Smyth, 2016; Devos, et al., 2007). For principals to fully realize their ability to serve as catalysts for school improvement, they should be allowed to prioritize physical, mental, cognitive, and emotional health. Desired levels of wellbeing occur in the absence of chronic physical, social, psychological, emotional, economic, and cognitive distress (La Placa, et al., 2013). As authors in this volume demonstrate, many school leaders have commenced specific practices targeting cognitive, emotional, and behavioral wellbeing to cope with occupational stress and flourishing- or, at the very least, surviving in such a challenging environment. Among coping strategies leaders have adopted include mindfulness and other wellbeing interventions/strategies intended to facilitate healthier lifestyles, relieve stress, and improve personal resilience (Aviles & Dent, 2015; Mahfouz, 2018; Wells, 2015). Recently, there has been a call to consider educational leadership through a positive human flourishing lens. Research in this area focuses on integrating wellbeing practices in professional development programs for teachers and school administrators to highlight the positive effects of personal and collective wellbeing in schools (Cherkowski & Walker, 2014). For example, empirical studies have examined how incorporating mindfulness practice promotes positive adaptive skills, stress resilience, and social and emotional skills needed in a school environment (Abenavoli, et al., 2013; Benn, et al., 2012; Dvor a kova et al., 2017; Jennings, 2015; Meiklejohn et al., 2012; Mahfouz et al., 2018). New understandings about the relationship between school administrators' wellbeing and school improvement efforts should ignite interest within the field. As such, this book’s chapters are organized into four distinct sections that provide: (a) an overview of the field (Section I), (b) an empirical argument for why such research is essential (Section II), (c) wellbeing models to be considered for use in the PK-12 setting (Section III), and, (d) specific wellbeing practices and frameworks currently being in PK-12 (Section IV).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference between leadership behaviors of principals employed in middle schools identified as Schools of Excellence and leadership behaviors of principals employed in schools identified as Schools of Progress. The influences of principal demographic variables of gender, experience and education level, as well as school size, were also studied. The population of this study included all of the 80 middle school principals of identified 2002-2003 Schools of Excellence and all 90 middle school principals of identified 2002-2003 Schools of Progress. A total of 61 principals returned accurately complete survey instruments. Each principal participated by completing a Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire - Form XII Self and Demographic Form. The data analyses for this study were accomplished through the application of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The conclusion of the study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the leadership behaviors in principals employed in middle schools identified as Schools of Excellence and Schools of Progress as perceived by principals on the scale of Superior Orientation. There was no statistically significant difference between the perceptions of principals as related to principals' gender, experience, education level, and school size.
