Subjects consisted of 20 kindergarten and first grade students who had been identified by the school district as eligible for special education services or at-risk with academic concerns using the Response to Intervention (RTI) model. Assessment tools were used to identify and target intervention needs. The results indicated that PALS was effective as a tier II supplementary intervention for all kindergarten students at-risk and some students with disabilities. PALS was not equally as effective with first grade students.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the effects of the partner reading portion of the Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) Reading Methods Program on the reading performance and on-task behavior of four elementary-school children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A multiple baseline across pairs of participants design was employed to examine the effects of the peer tutoring program on reading fluency, reading comprehension, and on-task behavior. Results indicated that the intervention produced decreases in off-task behavior and increases in on-task behavior for the participants and their classroom peers. Minimal gains in reading fluency were attained. Individual responses varied during the follow-up phase. Measures of reading comprehension indicated relatively consistent performance across baseline and intervention phases. Teacher and student ratings of acceptability indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the partner reading portion of the PALS reading program. Limitations, implications, and future research of the study are discussed.

Using a multiple baseline single case design, this study examined the impact of performance feedback from consultants on treatment integrity and student outcomes for Peer Assisted Learning Strategies, an evidence-based, standard protocol, class-wide peer tutoring intervention. Participants were four grade 2 to 5 general education teachers and the students in their classes. Results showed a functional relationship between performance feedback and treatment integrity, including higher treatment integrity of core intervention components. Reading growth rates appeared to have increased, but changes were not statistically significant. Overall, teachers rated the performance feedback procedure and PALS positively. Limitations of the study, implications for practice, and directions for future research are discussed.
