Book excerpt: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of academic standards in mathematics and English language arts. The mathematics standards introduce students to many new strategies and expectations to which parents have never been exposed. Many parents have expressed concern and frustration about these standards because they are unable to help their children with completing homework correctly. In addition to this, research has confirmed that parental involvement in education is positively associated with student achievement. Therefore, it is a worry if parents are unable to help their children with homework. The major aim of this study was to further investigate parents' attitudes towards mathematics, and more specifically towards the changes that the CCSS have created in 3rd & 4th grade mathematics. Additionally, this study could be beneficial in making future decisions about supporting parents and families. Parents of 3rd & 4th graders were interviewed and asked questions about their feelings towards mathematics, if they help with the mathematics homework, and if they are happy with the changes in mathematics. This information was then compared with their child's winter scores on the standardized district assessment called, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). Although there was not a direct relationship between students' scores on the MAP assessment and the parents' responses, the information collected from the interviews was extremely valuable. Parents have noticed changes in the way students are being taught mathematics and those changes are making it difficult for parents to support their children with homework. The majority of parents are not happy with the changes and do not see the benefits to their children's mathematics skills. Interestingly, many would be interested in a type of mathematics training course for parents. This could lead to parents feeling more supported by the school, and in turn, being able to support their children with homework.

Book excerpt: Parental home and school involvement at 10th grade of a nationally representative sample from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002) were analyzed to determine its impact on the math achievement of 12th graders from urban, public high school. The study aimed to replicate similar studies using middle school sample. The study also investigated whether parental involvement moderated the math achievement of Hispanic and African American students. Multiple regression was the method of analysis. Unlike studies with middle school students, there was no significant effect of parent-child discussion and parent's participation in school activities on 12th grade math achievement. Instead, for home involvement, rules about grades and homework were negatively associated with 12th grade math achievement which was consistent with previous findings. School involvement did not have any effect on 12th grade math achievement. This study also did not find parental involvement to be more beneficial to the math achievement of African American and Hispanic students than White students. This study concluded that parental home and school involvement might not be as pertinent to high school students as it was for middle school students.

Book excerpt: This book examines socioeconomic inequality and student outcomes across various Western industrialized nations and the varying success they have had in addressing achievement gaps in lower socioeconomic status student populations. It presents the national profiles of countries with notable achievement gaps within the respective school-aged student populations, explains the trajectory of achievement results in relation to both national and international large-scale assessment measures, and discusses how relevant education policies have evolved within their national contexts. Most importantly, the national profiles investigate the effectiveness of policy responses that have been adopted to close the achievement gap in lower socioeconomic status student populations. This book provides a cross-national analysis of policy approaches designed to address socioeconomic inequality.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine how well parent involvement, as a form of social capital, made up for familial differences in human (educational) and financial (income) capital thereby influencing reading and mathematics achievement scores. The sample consisted of 14952 kindergarten students from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study Kindergarten Cohort of 1998. The research examined the effect of parent involvement on overall gains in mathematics and reading achievement scores. Using multiple regression analysis, level of parent involvement was found to have an influence on overall reading and mathematics gains, however the effect was weak. Predictor variables found to have an influence on overall reading gain were poverty level, gender, level of parent involvement, and SES. These variables explain 1.2% of the overall variance in reading gain scores. Predictor variables found to have an influence on overall mathematics gain were poverty level, child changed schools between rounds, level of parent involvement, and SES. These variables explain 1.3 % of the overall variance in mathematics gain scores.

Book excerpt: Many studies have stated that completion of homework, specifically in mathematics positively affects student achievement. However, there are limited resources that provide support for implementing strategies to increase mathematics homework completion while increasing student achievement. In an attempt to offer more research in this area, this study determined whether parental involvement improved student homework completion and in turn increased student academic achievement, allowing students to be successful in mathematics. Data was collected and analyzed to determine whether parental involvement increased homework completion rates and increased academic achievement. An average of homework completion rates were compared prior to the treatment of parental involvement on homework, and again after the treatment. A linear regression test was conducted to determine whether or not an increase in homework completion correlates to higher academic achievement. An ANOVA test was performed at the start and the conclusion of the study to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control group. The results showed an increase in average homework completion rates for the experimental group that had parental involvement. They also showed a positive correlation to an increase in homework completion correlating to higher academic achievement. Lastly, the results of the study showed that when there is parental involvement present in ensuring students complete their homework, there is a significant increase in students' overall academic achievement.

Book excerpt: The researcher has passed a decade long experience as a mathematics teacher at secondary level in Nepal. Triggered by the recurrent failure of students in Mathematics achievement in the upper school level, this research was carried out to find the role of parents' involvement in their children's performance. In the context of developing countries' education system, this book helps to assess the mathematics achievement of high school level students under selected involvements of guardians such as monitoring television viewing, interaction with the teachers, creating learning environment at home and monitoring in home assignment. This book will be useful to promote the awareness in the parents involvement in order to enhance their children's mathematics performance and it also helps the researchers, teachers, academic institutes and policy makers to acknowledge the significance of the parents' contribution in their children's mathematics achievement.
