Book excerpt: This mixed-method survey study was undertaken to determine the extent to which high school assistant principals in Michigan reported experiencing physical or psychological difficulties as a result of occupational stress. Using Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional model as a theoretical lens, this study examined the intersection of people and their work environments through an analysis of their self-reported reflections on their capacity to deal with various work-based stressors. I collected data through an anonymous online survey with 46 questions organized into three sections: (1) Demographic information, (2) Stress in the workplace, and (3) General feedback from an open-ended response. I sent email invitations to high school assistant principals in public and private schools around the state, including deans of students or other administrators in charge of student discipline and supervision as well as teacher evaluation. A series of descriptive statistics, t-tests and linear regressions were run to determine levels of agreement to various statements about occupational stress, and to determine significant relationships 1) by gender, 2) by number of assistant principals, 3) by total school enrollment, and 4) by school setting. Additionally, qualitative analysis of the single open-ended question was conducted in order to allow participants the opportunity to elaborate on their quantitative responses, or provide new information when considering stress in their lives. My primary research question inquired about the impact occupational stress had on physical and/or mental conditions for assistant principals. Results showed minimal impact, primarily related to fatigue and weight gain, as well as difficulty with mentally leaving work responsibilites at the office. My secondary research questions pertained to whether any changes occurred for individuals after assuming an assistant principal position. These changes included challenges related to work-life balance, experiences with burnout, or behavioral changes such as decreased exercise or increased absenteeism or impatience. Results showed the adoption of a poor diet and decreased exercise as most prevalent for new assistant principals, as well as minimal relationships with burnout and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Qualtitative responses communicated concerns about increased workload (especially teacher evaluations), decreased funding, and difficulties maintaining work-life balance because of work-related responsibilities. Recommended coping mechanisms included daily exercise, following a healthy diet, taking mini-vacations to get away from work during the school year, and maintaining a positive attitude. This study provides insight about the potential impact of occupational stress for assistant principals, and gives direction to future research on the most influential conditions for them in schools.

Book excerpt: School leadership instability is particularly problematic for scholars and practitioners concerned with PK-12 school improvement, as second only to teachers, campus leadership has been identified as a primary factor in students' academic success (Young et al., 2007). Yet, while principals play an indispensable role in students' academic success, the job has become considerably more stressful as the role of a school leader continues to evolve. Specifically, added responsibilities, increased work intensity, and the ever-present menace of high stakes accountability have intensified the stress levels encountered by today's school leaders (Carpenter & Brewer, 2012; Chaplain, 2001; Darmody & Smyth, 2016; Wang, et al., 2018). This intensification negatively impacts a school’s teaching staff and its students, as the overall quality of the school experience can deteriorate if principals are unable to meet their potential due to the burnout and fatigue associated with chronic stress (Darmody & Smyth, 2016; Devos, et al., 2007). For principals to fully realize their ability to serve as catalysts for school improvement, they should be allowed to prioritize physical, mental, cognitive, and emotional health. Desired levels of wellbeing occur in the absence of chronic physical, social, psychological, emotional, economic, and cognitive distress (La Placa, et al., 2013). As authors in this volume demonstrate, many school leaders have commenced specific practices targeting cognitive, emotional, and behavioral wellbeing to cope with occupational stress and flourishing- or, at the very least, surviving in such a challenging environment. Among coping strategies leaders have adopted include mindfulness and other wellbeing interventions/strategies intended to facilitate healthier lifestyles, relieve stress, and improve personal resilience (Aviles & Dent, 2015; Mahfouz, 2018; Wells, 2015). Recently, there has been a call to consider educational leadership through a positive human flourishing lens. Research in this area focuses on integrating wellbeing practices in professional development programs for teachers and school administrators to highlight the positive effects of personal and collective wellbeing in schools (Cherkowski & Walker, 2014). For example, empirical studies have examined how incorporating mindfulness practice promotes positive adaptive skills, stress resilience, and social and emotional skills needed in a school environment (Abenavoli, et al., 2013; Benn, et al., 2012; Dvor a kova et al., 2017; Jennings, 2015; Meiklejohn et al., 2012; Mahfouz et al., 2018). New understandings about the relationship between school administrators' wellbeing and school improvement efforts should ignite interest within the field. As such, this book’s chapters are organized into four distinct sections that provide: (a) an overview of the field (Section I), (b) an empirical argument for why such research is essential (Section II), (c) wellbeing models to be considered for use in the PK-12 setting (Section III), and, (d) specific wellbeing practices and frameworks currently being in PK-12 (Section IV).

Book excerpt: Job stress in school staff is a concern for school systems and has an impact on many organizational factors within the school setting. The extent to which school personnel are aware of their stress, coping mechanisms and coping strategies is the focus of this study. The literature review highlights various aspects of stress including the physiology of stress, economic implications, specific job stressors in the field of education, burnout indicators for teachers, principal's awareness of stress, and coping strategies available and reportedly used by school staff.Three job type groups participated in the study: principals, teachers, and support staff. The study focuse don school staff's awareness and perceptions of stress, in addition to coping mechanisms available and reportedly used. A researcher designed online survey instrument entitled the Awareness of Stress and Coping Strategies was used to collect data. A suburban school district in the Mid-South region of the United States was the population studied. There were 211 participants who took part in this study of which 53.6% (n = 113) were teachers, 26.5% (n = 56) were administrators, and 19.9% (n = 42) were support staff. Most participants were female (87.2%). Men represented 12.8% of the participants.Findings from the analysis revealed that there were no significant differences in the perception of stress by job role groups: principals, teachers, and support staff. However, there were statistically significant differences in what stressors were believed to cause the most stress between all three role groups; notable to mention is that a common stressor of satistical significance was interaction with parents. Principals and support staff similarly ranked coping mechanisms; yet, principals and teachers were more inclined not to participate in coping strategies as often as support staff.There is a need to increase stress management opportunities to assist school personnel to meet the changing demands of the education profession. School personnel at the building level must understand how stress impacts their job as well as their ability to carry out their jobs. Principals must take the lead in promoting stress management awareness and coping strategies in order to improve school personnel well-being.
