Book excerpt: The study was conducted to determine if the use of daily multisensory math instruction would affect fourth graders' mastery of basic multiplication facts. Computer games, verbal recitation, writing, and hearing the question and answer to facts were instructions utilized during this study. The data included anecdotal notes, pre and post assessments, and observations. Analysis of the data determined multisensory instruction positively affects mastery of basic multiplication facts. Of the twelve students involved, all displayed improved assessment scores.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of basic multiplication mastery (0-12) and self-efficacy outcomes for elementary age students attempting to master multiplication facts in a Computer-Assisted Instructional (CAI) environment. Timez Attack (TA), a modern Internet based 3-D multiplication video game, was the computer program used in this study. Four third- and four fourth-grade classes of students at a public charter school received either 12 20-minute Teacher-Led Instructional (TLI), or TA multiplication practice sessions. Pre- and post Math Attitude Survey (MAS), timed multiplication tests, observations, and informal interviews were used to assess and compare TA and TLI's learning environments, performance, and self-efficacy outcomes. Both third- and fourth-grade TA students' level of multiplication mastery improved significantly after intervention. Results from the post-MAS also revealed significantly higher self-efficacy beliefs, and reduced nervousness in learning multiplication facts amongst some TA students. Statistical data analysis revealed no significant performance outcome differences between TLI and TA third-grade classes; however, post-test comparisons between fourth-grade TLI and TA students showed TA students significantly outperforming their comparison group counterparts by answering approximately 50% more problems in a given time and feeling significantly less nervous toward learning new multiplication math facts. The TA program's motivational, self-paced, and self-evaluative features seemed to produce a positive learning environment, which encouraged student learning. Educators should consider using CAI with features similar to TA's to improve students' academic performance and self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between the fourth grade students who did not utilize online websites for instruction and/or practice in the 2006-2007 school year and fourth grade students who utilized online websites for instruction and/or practice in the 2007-2008 school year. The study examined the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) math scores for 25 fourth grade students from a rural Georgia elementary school.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research study was to increase multiplication fact fluency for a small class of fourth grade students by implementing an efficient intervention model. The research question was: What are the effects of a Taped-Problems (TP) intervention on multiplication fact fluency of fourth grade Title I math students? This study applied a quantitative, quasiexperimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. To test the effect TP intervention had on student multiplication fact fluency, mean DCM scores on baseline assessment probes were compared to mean DCM scores on maintenance assessment probes with a two-tailed dependent t-test. For two of the three problem sets, the maintenance mean DCM scores increased significantly over the baseline mean DCM scores. Furthermore, analysis of individual student mean DCM scores indicated an increase from either frustration level to instructional level or instructional level to mastery level (Deno & Mirkin, 1977). The data moderately supported the hypothesis that TP intervention affected student multiplication fact fluency. Based on the results of this study, further research would be merited on examining the number of intervention sessions as related to sustained maintenance DCM scores. It would also be advantageous for future research to investigate the effects of efficiency modifications such as training students or developing computer software for independent administration of the TP intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the effect of the home learning environment on students' mastery of multiplication facts. This is important as students' mastery of multiplication facts provides a foundation for the mastery of advanced mathematics skills and concepts. Sixth grade parents and students, both male and female all in the same classroom from an inner city environment and of West Indian culture, were interviewed. There were three groups of four students each representing three levels of mastery of multiplication facts: below mastery level scoring less than 70%, on mastery level scoring 70% to 90%, and above mastery level scoring greater than 90% on 100 timed multiplication facts. Interacting with money at home and shopping with parents shows a strong relationship with mastery of multiplication facts with the lower and on mastery level groups at 50% frequency and the upper mastery level group at 100% frequency. The frequency of the lower mastery level group is 25%, on mastery level group is 75%, and the above mastery level group is 100% frequency with shopping. Mental math, commonly cited in the interviews involving monetary interaction, also indicates a strong relationship with mastery of multiplication facts with 50% frequency with the below mastery level group, 75% frequency with the on mastery level group, and 100% frequency with the above mastery level group. Results of this investigation indicate an interactive home learning environment involving manipulatives and real life experiences have a relationship to the mastery of multiplication facts.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to see if daily, systematic practice of basic multiplication facts would improve the computational fluency of my fourth graders. I implemented the Facts that Last program over the course of a ten week period in the fall of 2008. Each week of treatment focused on a specific strategy and included daily, direct instruction and time for skills practice. Pre- and posttest data was collect to show growth, in addition to a pre- and post treatment survey to gauge student attitudes in regards to math. Data collected supported my guiding question: Did the use of a systematic supplemental math program, specifically Facts that Last, implemented daily improve the multiplication computational scores of my fourth graders? All participates showed positive growth in their knowledge of basic multiplication facts, with 90% of students meeting the end goal of this study. A majority of students also indicated they felt more confident in their knowledge of math, more specifically basic facts. These finding suggest that strategy-based instruction and guided practice did improve the computational fluency of my students

As far as the symbols of mathematics are concerned, therefore, special teaching techniques are needed, just as they are for the teaching of reading and spelling. The book contains a wealth of material on individual cases and on children of different ages. Two central themes are discussed: first, that dyslexics need to carry out the operations of adding, dividing, and so on, before being introduced to the symbolism; and second that, because of their difficulties with rote learning, they need to be shown the many regularities and patterns which can be found in the number system. All the contributors have had experience of teaching dyslexic children at various levels.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of Nimble With Numbers would increase the retention of basic multiplication facts of fourth graders. The study was conducted over a nine-week period during the fall semester of the 2001-2012 school year. Twenty-two students were given a Mastering Math Facts pretest and an attitudinal survey. Seventeen of the students scored greater than 60% on the 80 question basic math facts test. The remaining five students were chosen to be the treatment group that the researcher would keep data on. There were two female and three male students. During the treatment, students used a variety of Nimble With Numbers activities two to three days each week. While doing so, anecdotal notes were kept on the attitudes and motivation of the students in the treatment group. At the end of the nine weeks of Mastering Math Facts and the same attitudinal survey were given to measure growth. Results from all assessments indicated that an improvement in the retention of multiplication facts as well as an improvement in attitude towards math had occurred. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Book excerpt: The intent of this project is to replicate a specific instructional method used in Wood et al.0́9s study focusing on the use of the pegword mnemonic strategy paired with stories and illustrations for 15 targeted multiplication facts remaining after mastering math facts in the zeros, ones, twos, fives, or nines groups. Three questions will be asked during this project on the effects of mnemonic instruction using pegword strategies on the percentage of multiplication facts answered correctly by third, fourth, and fifth grade students with learning disabilities? 1) Does pegword instruction paired with stories and illustrations result in immediate improvement for the specific multiplication facts taught? 2) Are students0́9 performances on previously taught multiplication facts maintained as new multiplication facts are introduced? 3) Do students maintain accuracy on 2 and 4 week follow-up tests?
