Book excerpt: This study empirically examined (1) the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment, (2) the relationships between some job facets and job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and (3) the relationships between some personal charateristics and job satisfaction and organizational commitment among 85 nurses in Western Australia. The instruments used included the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS) and Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). Factor analysis has supported the validity of the research constructs. Reliability analyses have shown that the reliabilities of the instruments ranged from 0.67 to 0.94. Correlational analyses have supported a positive relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Satisfaction with the job facets were correlated positively with overall job satisfaction and also organizational commitment, except for satisfaction with co-workers. Only age was correlated with job satisfaction and no correlation was found for other personal characteristics and organizational commitment. Analyses of variances with the facets of job satisfaction were also carried out for the personal characteristics. Older nurses were found to be more satisfied with their co-workers, growth and overall job satisfaction than their younger colleagues. Nurses with 'high school' qualifications are more satisfied with their job security than nurses with 'postgraduate' qualifications. No significant differences were found for marital status, number of children and age.
