Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of urban vehicle traffic generates serious transportation and environmental problems in most countries of the world. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are effective means to solve basic traffic problems, such as driving safety, road congestion, disaster supplies, emissions, etc. Inter-vehicle communication (IVC) system is one of the most important components of ITS. In recent years, the rapid development of information technologies leads a revolution in IVC, enabling IVC be a powerful multifunctional system. However, there exist numerous challenges for ITS studies. This dissertation is aimed to address three urgent and critical issues in IVC: efficiency of information exchanging among connected vehicles, simulation methods, and IVC applications. Information transmission efficiency, which can be measured by communication throughput or capacity, is a fundamental property of vehicular ad hoc networks. This dissertation theoretically analyzes communication throughputs, including broadcast and unicast communications, under discrete and continuous vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). We also examine influence of transmission range, interference ratio, market penetration rate of IVC-equipped vehicles, percentage of senders, and traffic waves on throughputs. Furthermore, we derive a theoretical formulation to calculate communication capacities under uniform traffic streams. And, an integer programming (IP) model is improved to explore capacities in general traffic, and a genetic algorithm is constructed to search the solutions efficiently. The second contribution of this dissertation is the development of a hybrid traffic simulation model to evaluate transportation systems incorporated with IVC technologies. As IVC-equipped vehicles are able to obtain more road information and they are controlled to pursue some objectives, they will behave differently from others, and transportation systems will become heterogeneous. This dissertation presents a hybrid traffic simulation model coupling microscopic and macroscopic models to address heterogeneity in transportation systems. In the model, equipped vehicles are regulated by a car-following model, while the other vehicles are described as continuous media with the Lighthill-Whitham-Richard (LWR) model. We analytically study the model on a single-lane road using a modified Godunov method. The hybrid model shows its potential of accurate wave propagation from individual vehicles to continuous traffic streams, and reversely; i.e., the model is capable of analyzing heterogeneous traffic. Moreover, consistency, stability and convergence of the hybrid model are carefully investigated. The model also shows the advancement of computational efficiency and control flexibility on traffic simulations. Finally, for IVC applications in environment, we propose a green driving strategy to smooth traffic flow and lower pollutant emissions and fuel consumption. In this dissertation, we study constant and dynamic green driving strategies based on inter-vehicle communications. Generally, speed limit control in successful strategies guarantee a vehicle's speed profile be smooth while still following its leader during a relative long time period. A theoretical analysis of constant strategies demonstrates that optimal smoothing effects can be achieved when a speed limit is set to be close to but not smaller than average speed of traffic. We consider a dynamic strategy in which controlled vehicles share location and speed information based on a feedback control system. The influence of market penetration rate of equipped vehicles and communication delay on the strategy is also analyzed. Besides the development of the green driving strategy, we construct a green driving APP for smartphones on the Google Android platform and design a field experiment to check the feasibility of the strategy. The results are promising and support the advancements of IVC on reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

Book excerpt: In wireless vehicular communication networks the periodic transmission of status updates by all vehicles represents a basic service primitive, in particular for safety related applications. Due to the limited communication resources the question raises how much data each node may provide such that the quality of service required by applications can still be guaranteed under realistic interference conditions. Local broadcasts capacity is introduced and analyzed to tackle this open question.

Book excerpt: Universal vehicular communication promises many improvements in terms of ac- dent avoidance and mitigation, better utilization of roads and resources such as time and fuel, and new opportunities for infotainment applications. However, before widespread acceptance, vehicular communication must meet challenges comparable to the trouble and disbelief that accompanied the introduction of traf c lights back then. The rst traf c light was installed in 1868 in London to signal railway, but only later, in 1912, was invented the rst red-green electric traf c light. And roughly 50 years after the rst traf c light, in 1920, the rst four-way traf c signal comparable to our today’s traf c lights was introduced. The introduction of traf c signals was necessary after automobiles soon became prevalent once the rst car in history, actually a wooden motorcycle, was constructed in 1885. Soon, the scene became complicated, requiring the introduction of the “right-of-way” philosophy and later on the very rst traf c light. In the same way the traf c light was a necessary mean to regulate the beginning of the automotive life and to protect drivers, passengers, as well as pedestrians and other inhabitants of the road infrastructure, vehicular communication is necessary to accommodate the further growth of traf c volume and to signi cantly reduce the number of accidents.

Book excerpt: Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) could be an important component of next-generation Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). It provides wireless connectivity among traveling vehicles to exchange real-time road condition and traffic information to support safe driving and traffic management. IVC system can be considered as a special form of mobile ad-hoc network (MANET). The MANET and IVC are both hot issues for researches. However, there are few domestic literature combining the two topics. Most of them are discussed separately. Thus, the studies on architecture and protocols of mobile ad-hoc network have great value for establishing vehicular networks. Two simple IVC scenarios are implemented on NS-2. The quantitative metrics like network throughput, delay and packet-loss are used to assess the performance of MANET for IVC under different vehicular speeds, transport layer protocols and routing protocols. The results indicate that MANET can be used for IVC well. The different speeds and protocols should be chosen based on specific IVC scenarios.

If we consider in transportation domain, the number of vehicles is increasing every day. Their popularity brings many problems in areas of safety and also environment. Therefore, there are many researchers working in this domain to find solutions on how they can improve safety, comfort in people s life and reduce pollution. There are many existing solutions in inter vehicle communication system and intelligent transportation system. However, there are still some areas that require improvement. This work, we focus on data management level rather than network level. Our goal is to collect all events and then aggregate them together in order to reduce data storage size, package transfer size and response time to driver s queries; and finally to control the exchange aggregated data process between vehicles. To solve these problems, we implemented an aggregation simulator by using a proposed aggregation data structure; and data that was generated by VESPA (Vehicular Event Sharing with a mobile P2P Architecture) parking simulator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road safety has been drawing increasing attention in the public, and has been subject to extensive efforts from both industry and academia in mitigating the impact of traffic accidents. Recent advances in wireless technology promise new approaches to facilitating road safety and traffic management, where each vehicle (or referred to as On-board unit (OBU)) is allowed to communicate with each other as well as with Roadside units (RSUs), which are located in some critical sections of the road, such as a traffic light, an intersection, and a stop sign. With the OBUs and RSUs, a self-organized network, called Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET), can thus be formed. Unfortunately, VANETs have faced various security threats and privacy concerns, which would jeopardize the public safety and become the main barrier to the acceptance of such a new technology. Hence, addressing security and privacy issues is a prerequisite for a market-ready VANET. Although many studies have recently addressed a significant amount of efforts in solving the related problems, few of the studies has taken the scalability issues into consideration. When the traffic density is getting large, a vehicle may become unable to verify the authenticity of the messages sent by its neighbors in a timely manner, which may result in message loss so that public safety may be at risk. Communication overhead is another issue that has not been well addressed in previously reported studies. Many efforts have been made in recent years in achieving efficient broadcast source authentication and data integrity by using fast symmetric cryptography. However, the dynamic nature of VANETs makes it very challenging in the applicability of these symmetric cryptography-based protocols. In this research, we propose a novel Secure and Efficient RSU-aided Privacy Preservation Protocol, called SERP^3, in order to achieve efficient secure and privacy-preserving Inter-Vehicle Communications (IVCs). With the commitments of one-way key chains distributed to vehicles by RSUs, a vehicle can effectively authenticate any received message from vehicles nearby even in the presence of frequent change of its neighborship. Compared with previously reported public key infrastructure (PKI)-based packet authentication protocols for security and privacy, the proposed protocol not only retains the security and privacy preservation properties, but also has less packet loss ratio and lower communication overhead, especially when the road traffic is heavy. Therefore, the protocol solves the scalability and communication overhead issues, while maintaining acceptable packet latency. However, RSU may not exist in some situations, for example, in the early stage deployment phase of VANET, where unfortunately, SERP^3 is not suitable. Thus, we propose a complementary Efficient and Cooperative Message Validation Protocol, called ECMVP, where each vehicle probabilistically validates a certain percentage of its received messages based on its own computing capacity and then reports any invalid messages detected by it. Since the ultimate goal of designing VANET is to develop vehicle safety/non-safety related applications to improve road safety and facilitate traffic management, two vehicle applications are further proposed in the research to exploit the advantages of vehicular communications. First, a novel vehicle safety application for achieving a secure road traffic control system in VANETs is developed. The proposed application helps circumvent vehicles safely and securely through the areas in any abnormal situation, such as a car crash scene, while ensuring the security and privacy of the drivers from various threats. It not only enhances traveler safety but also minimizes capacity restrictions due to any unusual situation. Second, the dissertation investigates a novel mobile payment system for highway toll collection by way of vehicular communications, which addresses all the issues in the currently existing toll collection technologies.
