Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: Domestic markets are growing too slowly to absorb increases in U.S. farm production. But reliance on foreign markets can make farmers vulnerable to sudden swings in prices, which are transmitted to other domestic sectors as well. This report assesses U.S. agriculture's capacity to meet domestic and export demands, and the likely consequences of doing so, under different economic assumptions about the future. By shifting production among regions, adopting new technology, and keeping up the quality of its resources, U.S. agriculture could double its exports within the next 30 years.

This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after the first generation of genetically engineered (GE) varieties became commercially available, adoption of these varieties by U.S. farmers is widespread for major crops. Despite the benefits, however, environmental and consumer concerns may have limited acceptance of GE crops, especially in Europe. This report focuses on GE crops and their adoption in the U.S. over the past 10 years. It finds that: (1) the pace of R&D activity by producers of GE seed has been rapid; (2) farmers have adopted some GE varieties widely and at a rapid rate and benefited from such adoption; and (3) the level of consumer concerns about foods that contain GE ingred. varies by country, with European consumers being most concerned. This book was released on 1983 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: The research results reported in this report deal with the potential costs to livestock feeders and consumers of unrestricted exports. A simulation model has been developed for this purpose. It is based on what happened to livestock production in the 1970s when feed ingredient prices changed dramatically. To provide the coefficients for the simulation model, three sets of relationships were estimated. First, regression procedures were employed to determine the relationship between corn and soybean prices and livestock feed ingredient prices. Second, a model was developed to assess how rapidly and to what extent livestock production falls as feed prices rise. Finally, the historical relationship between changes in livestock output (by sectors) and retail meat and livestock product prices was estimated in order to provide a basis for assessing the potential impact of changes in livestock output on consumer food costs.
