Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore barriers to access to health care among Latino adults. The independent variables examined in this study were acculturation, socio-economic status, and gender. The dependent variable is access to health care. This study utilized secondary data obtained from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), which included 9,506 Latino adults ages 18 years and above that were interviewed. The results revealed that Latino adults regardless of gender, who reported higher levels of acculturation were more likely to have access to care. In regards to gender, Latino men who reported lower levels of socio-economic status and acculturation presented with greater barriers in access to care compared to women. The findings may be beneficial in providing awareness and increase advocacy efforts among those in the helping professions in order to reduce barriers and increase access to care among Latino adults living in the United States.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of acculturation, socioeconomic status (SES), and self-rated health on the psychological distress among Latino American adults, and to acknowledge possible consequences for social work practice and policy. It was hypothesized that poverty and educational attainment would also have significant impacts on Latino American adult population. This study was a quantitative report using secondary data gathered from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) 2013-2014, Adult Survey. A sample population of Latino American adults between 18 and 65 years old was extracted (n = 4,538) from the CHIS. Descriptive and parametric inferential statistics were used for data analysis. The outcomes demonstrated that factors such as acculturation, health condition, health insurance coverage, SES, education attained, gender, and age had a statistically significant relationship concerning health and psychological distress among the Latino American adult population. Social workers should be aware of the findings to appropriately help clients who belong to this particular community. Health professionals and policy makers should work in partnership to develop preventive programs and interventions to address the issues affecting this population.

It is thus important that they have the resources to contribute maximally to American society. This can come about by first understanding and dealing with issues surrounding their health. In hopes of examining these issues and as a part of its continuing commitment to promote a national dialogue on race and diversity in the United States, the National Academies organized an expert meeting on Emerging Issues in Hispanic Health on April 10, 2002. We use data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) linked to data from the 2000 U.S. Census and other data sources. We analyze multiple measures of access to health care. Measures of social networks are constructed at the ZCTA level and include percent of the population that is Hispanic, percent of the population that speaks Spanish, and percent of the population that is foreign-born and Spanish-speaking. Regressions are stratified by insurance status and social network measures are interacted with individual-level measures of acculturation. For insured Mexican-American immigrants, living in an area populated by relatively more Hispanics, more immigrants, or more Spanish-speakers increases access to care. The social network effects are generally stronger for more recent immigrants compared to those who are better established. We find no effects of these characteristics of the local population on access to care for U.S. born Mexican-Americans, suggesting that similarities in race and language may contribute more to the formation of social ties among individuals who are less acculturated to the U.S. Among the uninsured, we find evidence suggesting that social networks defined by ethnicity improve access to care among recent immigrants. A finding particular to the uninsured is the negative influence of percent of the population that is Hispanic and the percent that is Spanish-speaking on access to care among U.S. born Mexican-Americans. The results provide evidence that social networks play an important role in access to health care among Mexican-Americans. The results also suggest the need for further study using additional measures of social networks, analyzing other racial and ethnic groups, and exploring social networks defined by characteristics other than race, language and ethnicity.
