Book excerpt: Two studies examined the effects of exposure to conventional and novel thin-ideal media and the efficacy of a media literacy intervention to reduce immediate negative effects of exposure. Moderators were also examined, along with the efficacy of the media literacy intervention to reduce risk-factors for eating disorders at a two-week follow-up. In Study 1, 263 female undergraduates completed questionnaires, viewed a media literacy intervention or a control video, viewed 20 images of thin female models from pro-anorexia websites or fashion magazines, or a control condition, answered a final set of questionnaires, and completed a survey two-weeks later. Study 2 included 212 female undergraduates and differed from Study 1 in that participants viewed a pro-anorexia website or a control website, and no follow-up was conducted. Collectively, participants exposed to thin-ideal media experienced a range of deleterious effects on mood, body image, cognitions, and behavioral expectations. There was limited support for the efficacy of the media literacy intervention on immediate outcomes, although in Study 2, the intervention positively impacted some aspects of body image. There was no support for the intervention to reduce risk-factors for eating disorders at the follow-up. Moderators played an important role in Study 2, though not so much in Study 1. Findings are discussed in light of the need to develop effective interventions and to continue to explore the impact of novel forms of thin-ideal media.

Research that explores the level and effects of media influences calls for measurements of the quantity and character of exposure to a variety of potentially overlapping media sources, an analysis of the content of the media output, and examination of the social context and relationships that are associated with the media experience. Recognizing the importance of this research, the Board on Children, Youth, and Families, under the auspices of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine, and with the sponsorship of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, held a workshop in March 2006. Its purpose was twofold: to examine the quality of the measures used in studies of the effects of media on children's health and development and to identify gaps in both research and practice. The goal was for a variety of experts to consider steps and strategies that could move this research forward and improve its utility for helping parents, practitioners, and policy makers guide young people in navigating a media-rich environment. Studying Media Effects on Children and Youth provides a summary of that discussion, supplemented with information from two papers prepared for the workshop. It begins with an examination of the potential impact of media exposure, followed by a description of the basic research questions and the methods currently used to study them. Methodological questions and challenges and theoretical approaches are described; they are discussed from the perspective of other kinds of epidemiological research. Unfortunately, less than half of those with eating disorders receive treatment, which can be very expensive. Thus, effective prevention has become a major public health priority. The Body Project is an empirically based eating disorder prevention program that offers young women an opportunity to critically consider the costs of pursuing the ultra-thin ideal promoted in the mass media, which improves body acceptance and reduces risk for developing eating disorders. Young women with elevated body dissatisfaction are recruited for group sessions in which they participate in a series of verbal, written, and behavioral exercises in which they consider the negative effects of pursuing the thin-ideal. Chapters provide information on the significance of body image and eating disorders, the intervention theory, the evidence base which supports the theory, recruitment and training procedures, solutions to common challenges, and a new program aimed at reducing obesity onset, as well as intervention scripts and participant handouts. The Body Project is the only currently available eating disorder prevention program that has been shown to reduce risk for onset of eating disorders and received support in trials conducted by several independent research groups. The group sessions are brief and fun to lead, and this guide provides all of the necessary information to walk clinicians, teachers, counselors, and volunteers through leading the program for vulnerable young women.
