Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Third International Workshop of the European Association for Machine Translation, held in Heidelberg, Germany in April 1993. The EAMT Workshops traditionally aim at bringing together researchers, developers, users, and others interested in the field of machine or computer-assisted translation research, development and use. The volume presents thoroughly revised versions of the 15 best workshop contributions together with an introductory survey by the volume editor. The presentations are centered primarily on questions of acquiring, sharing, and managing lexical data, but also address aspects of lexical description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the generation of a lexicon for a principle-based parser (Minipar [5,%1) using descriptions of verbs based on Lexical-Conceptual Structure (LCS [1,21).1 We aim to determine how much syntactic information we can obtain from a semantic- based lexicon. More specifically, we aim to provide a general approach to projection of syntactic entries from semantic (language-independent) lexicons-and to test the effect of such lexicons on parser performance. Verbs are grouped together into classes-each denoted by an LCS representation and the thematic grid. These are mapped systematically into syntactic categories associated with entries in the Minipar parser. The main advantage of this LCS-to-syntax projection is language potability: We currently have LCS lexicons for English, Arabic, Spanish, and Chinese; thus, our LCS-projection approach allows us to produce syntactic lexicons for parsing in each of these languages. For comparing the performance of the projection from the LCS to Minipar coes, we also generated the mappings for the codes of Longman's Directionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE [81)-the most comprehensive online dictionary for syntactic categorization. Preliminary experiments indicate that our approach yields a categorization of verbs with 58% precision and 65% recall as measured against LDOCE-with an improved precision of 74% when redundancy is removed. The next section presents a brief description of each code set we use. In Section 3, we explain how we generated Minipar codes from LCS representation. Finally, Section 4, discusses our experiments and results.

Book excerpt: This is an exciting time for Artificial Intelligence, and for Natural Language Processing in particular. Over the last five years or so, a newly revived spirit has gained prominence that promises to revitalize the whole field: the spirit of empiricism. This book introduces a new approach to the important NLP issue of automatic ambiguity resolution, based on statistical models of text. This approach is compared with previous work and proved to yield higher accuracy for natural language analysis. An effective implementation strategy is also described, which is directly useful for natural language analysis. The book is noteworthy for demonstrating a new empirical approach to NLP; it is essential reading for researchers in natural language processing or computational linguistics.

Book excerpt: Automatic Indexing and Abstracting of Document Texts summarizes the latest techniques of automatic indexing and abstracting, and the results of their application. It also places the techniques in the context of the study of text, manual indexing and abstracting, and the use of the indexing descriptions and abstracts in systems that select documents or information from large collections. Important sections of the book consider the development of new techniques for indexing and abstracting. The techniques involve the following: using text grammars, learning of the themes of the texts including the identification of representative sentences or paragraphs by means of adequate cluster algorithms, and learning of classification patterns of texts. In addition, the book is an attempt to illuminate new avenues for future research. Automatic Indexing and Abstracting of Document Texts is an excellent reference for researchers and professionals working in the field of content management and information retrieval.
