Book Synopsis The Nucleon Optical Model by : Peter Edward Hodgson
Download or read book The Nucleon Optical Model written by Peter Edward Hodgson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleon optical model is widely used to calculate the elastic scattering cross-sections and polarisations for the interaction of neutrons and protons with atomic nuclei. The optical model potentials not only describe the scattering but also provide the wave functions needed to analyse a wide range of nuclear reactions. They also unify many aspects of nuclear reactions and nuclear structure. This book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the subject and a selection of papers by the author describing the optical model in detail. It contains full references to the original literature with many examples of the application of the model to the analysis of experimental data.

Book Synopsis Some Fundamental Aspects of the Optical Potential for the Interaction of Fast Neutrons with Cobalt by :

This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential elastic- and inelastic-scattering cross sections, measured from approx. 1.5 to 10.0 MeV, are interpreted in terms of spherical-optical-statistical (OM) and coupled-channels models. A successful description of the differential elastic scattering below 10 MeV and the total cross section to 20.0 MeV is achieved using the spherical OM with energy-dependent strengths and geometries. These energy dependencies are large below approx. 7.0 MeV, but become smaller and similar to those reported for /open quotes/global/close quotes/ potentials at higher energies. This change in the energy dependence of the parameters probably marks the onset of the Fermi surface anomaly approx. 19 MeV above the Fermi energy. Inelastic scattering to the levels below 1.8 MeV displays a forward-peaked behavior. This nonstatistical component is interpreted using the weak-coupling model in which the f--2 proton hole is coupled to the 2/sup /plus// state in 6°Ni. This model provides an explanation of the unusual energy dependence and relatively small radius found for the imaginary OM potential. The coupling also contributes to the large value of this potential. The real spherical OM potential derived from the neutron-scattering results is extrapolated to bound energies by using the dispersion relationship and the method of moments. The resulting real-potential strength and radius peak at approx.-10.0 MeV, whereas the real diffuseness is at a minimum at this energy. The extrapolated potential is approx. 8% larger than that implied by reported particle-state energies, and approx. 13% smaller than indicated by hole-state energies. 42 refs., 8 figs.

Download or read book Contemporary Models of the Atomic Nucleus written by P. E. Nemirovskii and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Models of the Atomic Nucleus discusses nuclear structure and properties, expounding contemporary theoretical concepts of the low-energy nuclear processes underlying in nuclear models. This book focuses on subjects such as the optical nuclear model, unified or collective model, and deuteron stripping reaction. Other topics discussed include the basic nuclear properties; shell model; theoretical analysis of the shell model; and radiative transitions and alpha-decay. The deuteron theory and the liquid drop nuclear model with its application to fission theory are also mentioned, but only briefly discussed. This publication benefits students and researchers conducting work on nuclear physics, specifically on the constituents and interactions of the atomic nucleus.

Book Synopsis Implications of a Fully Nonlocal Implementation of the Dispersive Optical Model by : MohammadHossein Mahzoon
Download or read book Implications of a Fully Nonlocal Implementation of the Dispersive Optical Model written by MohammadHossein Mahzoon and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully nonlocal treatment for the dispersive optical model (DOM) is implemented for both the real and imaginary part of the self-energy inspired by ab initio theoretical calculations of this quantity. By means of the dispersion relation between the real and imaginary part of the optical potential a link between the energy domain of nuclear reactions and nuclear structure is established. The relevant scattering data for neutrons and protons on 40Ca are described with the same quality as was accomplished with previous local versions of the DOM. The solution of the Dyson equation at positive and negative energies is generated with a complete treatment of the nonlocality of the potentials. The resulting propagator has been utilized to explain and predict relevant quantities of the ground-state of the 40Ca nucleus. In particular the charge density, spectral strength and particle number can, for the first time, be accurately described. Moreover, due to the introduction of nonlocality in the imaginary part of the self-energy it is also possible to describe high-momentum protons and the contribution of the two-body interaction to the ground-state energy. The calculation of the spectral density at positive energies allows for the determination of the spectral strength of mostly occupied single-particle orbits in the continuum. Consistency of the resulting depletion numbers with the corresponding occupation numbers is studied and compared to ab initio calculations for these quantities. Starting from the 40Ca self-energy, an extension to the 48Ca nucleus is implemented focusing on the N-Z dependence of the nucleon self-energy. Neutron scattering data can be described with even better quality than previous local DOM calculations. The scattering properties for protons are of similar excellent quality as for previous local results. From the solution of the Dyson equation for neutrons it is possible to calculate the neutron distribution of this nucleus allowing for the determination of the neutron skin which is relevant for the physics of neutron stars. The resulting value is larger than most calculations previously reported including an ab initio one. An argument supporting a large neutron skin is provided by analyzing proton elastic scattering data on both 40Ca and 48Ca.
