Therefore, the aim of this short corpus study is to investigate the usage of idioms in the language of nonnative English speakers, especially in the language production of German English second language learners (“ESL-Students”). It is argued that ESL-Students in Germany do not use idiomatic language in their production of English, mainly due to the circumstance that idioms are not explicitly taught in the English foreign language classroom (EFL-classroom) and because the language input in German English teaching classes is too artificial to pick them up unintentionally. The first part of this paper will contain a definition of what idioms and idiomatic language are and shortly address the processes of idiom processing, comprehension and acquisition. A second part will contain a corpus study that will shortly examine the usage of idioms by ESL-Students in contrast to the idiom usage of native speakers in quantitative as well as in qualitative terms. The two corpora used will be the ICLE-German (“ICLE-GE”) and the LOCNESS corpus. The list of idioms that the corpora are examined for is taken from English second language teaching textbooks currently used in German English classes. The final part of this paper will discuss the question whether the teaching of idioms in German ESL-classrooms is successful (correct and rich usage of idioms by ESL-Students, almost native proficiency) or not (idiom usage in ESL-Students incorrect or low) and make suggestions for effective idiom teaching in the EFL-classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idioms are a linguistic form which appear frequently in bilingual communication andplay a special role because of the way their meaning is generated. In my master thesis, I explored the understanding of idioms and conducted a study with German-speaking residents of Kitchener-Waterloo. My research question was how the use of English as a major communication language influences the German-speaking immigrant's understanding of German idioms. In the thesis, I considered linguistic as well as extra- or sociolinguistic factors. For the linguistic factors that influence the immigrant's understanding of idioms, I chose a psycholinguistic approach that relates the meaning and thus the understandability of idiomatic expressions to cognitive structures. Furthermore, I examined several sociolinguistic factors that influence language attrition. The three linguistic fields of phraseology (Burger, Dobrovol'skij), cognitive linguistics (Gibbs, Lakoff, Paradis) and language attrition (Liebscher) build the theoretical background. I created a questionnaire which consisted of 24 questions and was filled out by 58 participants, 27 by hand and 31 online. The idioms used in the study were randomly selected from a list of idioms at www.sprichwort-plattform.org. To analyze the questionnaires' answers quantitatively, I used the statistic program SPSS. The analyzed linguistic factors were A. similarity between idioms in both languages, B. parallelism of the semantic and syntactic structures, C. idiomaticity. The results showed for A. that both very similar and not similar idioms are remembered well, for B. that separable idioms are remembered better than non-separable, for C. that non-idiomatic idioms are remembered better than idiomatic. According to the results, older immigrants, immigrants who were born in Germany, and who came to Canada a short time ago, had a better understanding of idioms. The factors gender, education, language skills, and language contact have not proved significant.

The first part deals with the linguistic definition of the term “idiom”, including possibilities for their classification. The second section of the first part is going to present the concept of euphemism followed by a brief explanation and categorization of metaphors and the attempt of giving possible reasons for the maintaining taboo of death in western culture. The purpose of the second part of this paper is to analyze and compare a number of English and German idioms of death contrastively, in order to identify lexical and semantic similarities, including the investigation of the origin of certain expressions. Subsequently, a short closing reflection will end up this paper. As death plays a significant role not only in western society but in communities all around the globe, idioms related to death became an important tool in human communication. But what is the actual purpose of using paraphrases in order to relate to death in an utterance? Why do idioms of death have a cultural importance and how is an idiom actually defined? Do certain idioms of death have the same semantic meaning in other languages? Human communication has created a great number of idioms and figures of speech which range throughout every section of the daily life and appear in every situation possible. As this phenomenon indeed shows its importance, linguists have created the field of phraseology to investigate such expressions. Based on language contact and historical events, many idioms have synonyms and equivalent counterparts in several languages. Learning the specific idioms related to a certain culture helps to get to know more about the history, ethics and social values of a certain community.
