After all, nothing could have been weirder than the werewolf curse and plotting pirates he had to face the summer before! Or at least that's what Stanley thinks; but he has a lot to learn about Cramdon Rock, especially after accidentally bringing some dead pirates back to life—ones that make the previous pirates he faced look like cuddly puppy dogs and ones that are trudging across the arctic determined to fi nd a magical medallion in Stanley's house. The only person who can save him is his dead great-uncle Bartholomew, which is a little tricky considering he's...well, dead. Oh, and did we mention headless? With the help of a talking stuffed fish and a new friend named Daisy, Stanley sets out to fi nd his great-uncle's head, stop the pirates, and win over some new readers in this second funny and spooky installment of a thrilling new series.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book and the March 2001 selection of Oprah's Book Club® ! Icy Sparks is the sad, funny and transcendent tale of a young girl growing up in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky during the 1950’s. Gwyn Hyman Rubio’s beautifully written first novel revolves around Icy Sparks, an unforgettable heroine in the tradition of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird or Will Treed in Cold Sassy Tree. At the age of ten, Icy, a bright, curious child orphaned as a baby but raised by adoring grandparents, begins to have strange experiences. Try as she might, her "secrets"—verbal croaks, groans, and physical spasms—keep afflicting her. As an adult, she will find out she has Tourette’s Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, but for years her behavior is the source of mystery, confusion, and deep humiliation. Narrated by a grown up Icy, the book chronicles a difficult, but ultimately hilarious and heartwarming journey, from her first spasms to her self-acceptance as a young woman. Curious about life beyond the hills, talented, and energetic, Icy learns to cut through all barriers—physical, mental, and spiritual—in order to find community and acceptance. Along her journey, Icy faces the jeers of her classmates as well as the malevolence of her often-ignorant teachers—including Mrs. Stilton, one of the most evil fourth grade teachers ever created by a writer. Called willful by her teachers and "Frog Child" by her schoolmates, she is exiled from the schoolroom and sent to a children’s asylum where it is hoped that the roots of her mysterious behavior can be discovered. Here Icy learns about difference—her own and those who are even more scarred than she. Yet, it isn’t until Icy returns home that she really begins to flower, especially through her friendship with the eccentric and obese Miss Emily, who knows first-hand how it feels to be an outcast in this tightly knit Appalachian community. Under Miss Emily’s tutelage, Icy learns about life’s struggles and rewards, survives her first comical and heartbreaking misadventure with romance, discovers the healing power of her voice when she sings, and ultimately—takes her first steps back into the world. Gwyn Hyman Rubio’s Icy Sparks is a fresh, original, and completely redeeming novel about learning to overcome others’ ignorance and celebrate the differences that make each of us unique.

Fandomania.com’s #1 Book of 2009 To put it bluntly, Max Frei is a loser. He spends his day sleeping and at night he smokes, eats, and loafs around because he can’t catch a wink. But then he gets lucky. Through his dreams, he begins to contact a parallel world where magic is a daily practice—and, strangely, Max seems to fit right in. Once a social outcast, he’s now known in this new world of Echo as the “unequalled Sir Max.” He’s a member of the Department of Absolute Order, formed by a species of enchanted secret agents; his job is to solve cases involving illegal magic. And he’s about to embark on a journey down the winding paths of this strange and unhinged universe. “Fans of Jasper Fforde and Susanna Clark will happily jump into Frei’s world.” —USA Today “If Harry Potter smoked cigarettes and took a certain matter-of-fact pleasure in administering tough justice, he might like Max Frei, the protagonist of this fantasy novel.” —Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dennis Fleet is a hard-working and pious young Christian man who’s come to the big city of Chicago in order to earn money for his poor family. As he braves his first icy winter, he quickly moves up the rungs of business until he finds himself working for the prosperous art dealer Mr. Ludolph. Ludolph’s beautiful daughter Christine quickly catches Dennis’s eye—but much to his chagrin, she’s a non-believer. Roe, a Presbyterian minister from New York, was inspired to write Barriers Burned Away after news of the Great Chicago Fire spurred him to visit the remains of the city. He set the book against the backdrop of the encroaching fire, making the novel a fascinating portrait of an era of Chicago that was literally burned to cinders. The book went on to become the bestselling book of 1872, and with its high moral air and sermon-like prose played no small part in breaking down the prejudice against fiction novels that was common in Christian communities of the day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tall man with long hair and a red t-shirt with black shorts and casual slippers walked out of the washroom, after a shower, and made his way to the bed. 'This was a long day. Should set up the alarm.' He said to himself as he kept his phone on the side and rested his weary head on the pillow. He looked at the ceiling, noticing chips in the paint. He further looked at all the walls around him with a sigh, 'Definitely needs a paint job.' He said with a sigh as he closed his eyes. Soon, he was woken up by a shooting pain in his left leg. It was as if he had one of those painful cramps combined with bashing his little toe against the edge of a steel table. He instinctively pulled his leg closer to himself and sat up. He tried to look at his toe and touched it. It felt like something weirdly wet and sticky. He pulled his fingers closer to his nose, in an attempt to deduce what it was as he wasn't able to see anything in the sheer darkness. He started panting in fear as he recognised the smell. It was obviously blood. He jumped off the bed and picked up his phone trying to flash its torch around the room. He couldn't see anything so, he flashed it down on his hand which was painted red with blood. Shock took over him as he looked down at his toe and saw big teeth marks on his foot, leaking and oozing blood. Just then, the side of his eye caught a glimpse of something crawling in the corner of the room. Without even taking a proper look at it, he knew it was trouble. So, he put off the torch and taking advantage of the darkness, he quietly crept to the corner and tried to inch towards the living room of the house. I need to reach the gate and get out. He thought to himself, trying to hold his panic inside. He kept an eye out behind him while inching closer to the main gate. I'm almost there. I can do this. He thought to himself as he held his tears inside and kept going. But, his fear hit back at him as he heard a weird sound behind him. Something was following him. Crawling to him. He knew it. He could feel it. The pain he felt while moving added to his overall difficulty but he wasn't ready to give up the hope, so he kept going, slowly but steadily. He kept quiet so as to not give this entity the gift of sound to track him down. He kept going, feeling a sense of victory building at the back of his head. But, just then, he felt unbearable pain in his foot. He tried to flash his torch down again, but before he could see, his leg was pulled up with a sudden swing as he dropped down and his head hit the ground. He gasped and screamed as an unbearable and unknown pain hit him, still trying to pull himself with his hands, and inch towards the door. But he realised that his attempts were all in vain, as he felt himself being dragged deeper inside the house. His eyes kept wandering trying to see what it was and find a way out of here, alive. But soon he felt something creep over his body. Then, he came face to face with his biggest nightmare. He only saw that face for a moment before something sharp pierced through his eyes and everything went dark. His struggle was over. The lamp of hope extinguished, and pure silence took over, once again. . . Will this silence ever be replaced?

Book excerpt: A popular claim in recent years is that a person only uses 10% of their brain, and while this is not remotely true, it is accurate that the human brain contains massive untapped capabilities. Brains remain the most magnificent biological machines, and the latest neurobiological research on nutrition, sleep, music and exercise aims to help people keep theirs in top shape. The human mind is more than just electrochemical signals--it's a fountain of consciousness, transcending physicality. This work, backed by decades of experience, includes the latest neuroscience research and vignettes based on the author's actual patients. Containing "mental hacks" to explain how to overcome mental limitations, it explores how simple changes like breaking bad habits, having a better work-life balance, and more could help the human mind go from being just "fine-tuned" to being enlightened and limitless. With these hacks, a designer brain is just around the corner.
