Upon arriving back in her city, Helnia Alnem finds herself branded a criminal by the corrupt and traitorous government, who try to arrest her to keep her from spreading the truth of their betrayal. Allying with a small group of rebels, Helnia must expose the government's betrayal to the people before the city falls to the hordes of monsters that would like nothing less than the total destruction of their society. Helnia Alnem has settled back into normal life in the capital of her home country, but when one of her students is kidnapped by the monstrous Draymens, she must ally with a mad mage in order to save her student's life. And if she fails, then not only will her student die, but she herself will fall into the hands of her enemies, who intend to sacrifice her and her brother to resurrect their dark god. In the final book of The Dragon God Chronicles, revelations will be uncovered, questions will be answered, and the final conflict between good and evil will commence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The claim that Revelation's hymns function as did Classical tragic choral lyrics insofar as they comment upon or interpret the surrounding narrative has become axiomatic in studies of Revelation. Justin Jeffcoat Schedtler marks an advance in this line of inquiry by offering an exegetical analysis of Revelation's hymns alongside a presentation of the forms and functions of ancient tragic choruses and choral lyrics. Evaluating the hymns in light of the varieties and complexities of ancient tragic choruses, he demonstrate that they are not best evaluated in terms of choral lyrics generally, but in terms of dramatic hymns in particular, insofar as they constitute mythological-theological reflections on the surrounding narrative, and function to situate the surrounding dramatic activity in a particular mythological-theological contexts.

They drove out the monsters which lived within it and gave the land to their followers, who thanked the Dragon Gods and pledged to worship them for eternity. As time went on, however, the Yoresians grew proud and ceased worshipping the Dragon Gods, trusting instead in their magic. Thus, the Dragon Gods abandoned the Yoresians, which has turned out to be a mistake, for now the land of Yores is under attack from a powerful evil and the Yoresians cannot stand against it. Twin siblings Sarzen and Helnia, a warrior and a mage, set out to find the Dragon Gods, who they believe are their people's only hope of survival. But the quest ahead of them is fraught with dangers they can't even imagine, including a revelation about themselves that will shake their view of themselves and their leaders forever. The first is concerned with the nature of Satan and his activity in the world God has made. The second examines the different dimensions of Christ’s victory over Satan. The third considers ways in which Christ’s victory over Satan impacts God's people. The final section looks at various areas in which believers must fight sin and Satan. Two concluding chapters examine the weapons with which God equips his people for their spiritual warfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelation's Hymns examines the hymnic pericopes in Revelation in light of the cosmic conflict theme. It considers this theme as integral to the development of Revelation's plot. Recognizing that critical studies give interpretative primacy to the political realities that existed at the time of Revelation's composition, Grabiner responds to the need for an examination of the storyline from the perspective of issues that are of narrative importance. Grabiner argues that the cosmic conflict is at the centre of the book's concerns, and attempts to determine the function of the hymns with respect to this. Previous examinations of the hymns have considered them as a response and/or parody to Roman liturgy, examples of God's unquestioned sovereignty, or expressions of thematic overtones found throughout the book. While these approaches make a contribution to a greater understanding of the hymns, the relation to the ever-present conflict theme has not been explored. This study allows the hymnic sections to engage with the larger narrative issue as to who is truly the rightful sovereign of the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humanities offer insights into the highest (and lowest) capabilities of our own natures and, at their best, they function as prophetic champions of human dignity and as inspired celebrants of beauty. Envisioning God in the Humanities pays tribute to the career of Melissa Harl Sellew, a scholar and teacher who embodies the ideals of these academic disciplines. The collaboration of these essays attests to the potentialities for transcendence that emerge from rigorous and collective reflection on the texts, images, and ideas produced in ancient societies. Taking its cue from Professor Sellew’s own distinguished scholarship, this collection of studies begins with analyses of the New Testament Gospels, then moves more broadly toward the religious life of the ancient world as attested both in literature and materiality, among Jews and Christians, Greeks and Romans. Just as Sellew has done throughout her career, so this volume invites us into to the joy of exploring distant societies and, in so doing, into the fuller discovery of one’s own self.

They don't intend to be difficult; they don't consciously plot destruction or breed discontent among the members. But they often do undermine the ministry of the church and make pastors question their calling.Well-Intentioned Dragons guides those on church staffs in facing the strenuous task of dealing with difficult people--even ministering while under attack. Based on real-life stories of battle-scarred veterans, Marshall Shelley presents a clear picture of God's love for those on both sides of the problem. He describes tested strategies to communicate that love and turn dissidents into disciples. Here is a book that will not only help pastors and church leaders preserve their sanity (and maybe their jobs); it will help them minister more effectively, even to those who make life difficult.

Book excerpt: The Homeric Hymn to Demeter, composed in the late seventh or early sixth century B.C.E., is a key to understanding the psychological and religious world of ancient Greek women. The poem tells how Hades, lord of the underworld, abducted the goddess Persephone and how her grieving mother, Demeter, the goddess of grain, forced the gods to allow Persephone to return to her for part of each year. Helene Foley presents the Greek text and an annotated translation of this poem, together with selected essays that give the reader a rich understanding of the Hymn's structure and artistry, its role in the religious life of the ancient world, and its meaning for the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale of the combat between the Storm-god and the Sea that began circulating in the early second millennium BCE was one of the most well-known ancient Near Eastern myths. Its widespread dissemination in distinct versions across disparate locations and time periods - Syria, Egypt, Anatolia, Ugarit, Mesopotamia, and Israel - calls for analysis of all the textual variants in order to determine its earliest form, geo-cultural origin, and transmission history. In undertaking this task, Noga Ayali-Darshan examines works such as the Astarte Papyrus, the Pisaisa Myth, the Songs of Hedammu and Ullikummi, the Baal Cycle, Enuma elis, and pertinent biblical texts. She interprets these and other related writings philologically according to their provenance and comparatively in the light of parallel texts. The examination of this story appearing in all the ancient Near Eastern cultures also calls for a discussion of the theology, literature, and history of these societies and the way they shaped the local versions of the myth.
