Jethro, an anthropology professor consumed with saving classic Cadillacs, and his rebellious sidekick, Marlon, meet ex-con Moses Grady living in a 1956 Sedan. Meanwhile Jethro's overworked sister, Delmar, across town, is throwing together a dinner party with her friend Hortense who is trying to lure her noncommital hungry bachelor lawyer boyfriend Stanley into marriage. Stanley, on the sly, suggests to Delmar that she become a surrogate mother for his boss for big bucks, then he'll be made partner. The characters at the table keep coming and going : Delmar's senile mother, who plays stride blues piano, her tempestuous son, a rich old man found at a supermarket and one elderly matron who drops dead after the second course. Enter Jethro to say the Mayan last rites before, “she is pumped with chemicals for marketing purposes.” The Hungry Bachelors Club may have food, sex, Indians, the Blues, and characters who are struggling to see the difference between substance and style, obligation and necessity, but most of all, tolerance, which prevails through affirming and loving relationships. The Hungry Bachelors Club was made into a feature film, released November, 1999, directed by Gregory Ruzzin, starring Bill Nunn as Moses Grady and Jorja Fox as Delmar.

Book Synopsis Don't Go Up Kettle Creek by : William Lynwood Montell
Download or read book Don't Go Up Kettle Creek written by William Lynwood Montell and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Go Up Kettle Creek is a historical portrayal of a river and the people who made their living along its banks and tributaries. Drawing upon the personal recollections and oral traditions of longtime residents, William Lynwood Montell describes a century and a half of life in the Upper Cumberland. Montell organized his material according to the topics that dominated his tape-recorded conversations with residents of the area-farming, logging and rafting, steamboating, the Civil War-topics that the people themselves saw as important in their history. In reconstructing the past, the author also illuminates the relationship between geographic and economic factors in the region; the prolonged affects of a cataclysmic event, the Civil War, on the isolated area; and the impact of modernization, in the form of "hard" roads and cheap, TVA-supplied electricity, on the traditional ways of people. First published in 1983, this book is now available in paperback for the first time. Included with this edition is a new foreword in which Montell and Mary Robbins, executive director of the Tennessee Upper Cumberland Tourism Association, describe changes in the area that have occured since the book's initial appearance. The Author: William Lynwood Montell, now retired, was coordinator of programs in folk and interculturual studies at Western Kentucky University. His numerous books include Ghosts along the Cumberland and The Saga of Coe Ridge.

Book excerpt: The Woodstock Tales is an updating of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Now the tale tellers are a bunch of hippies, womens libbers, a Vietnam veteran and a black Reverend, etc on the way to Woodstock in a dark truck overnight. The words rock with the rhythm of the truck and the poetry of the 'Age of Aquarius'. Every band that played is mentioned in the text, and the stories retain all the humanity and crudity of Chaucer. Updated to '69 it is of course all about drugs, sex and rock'n'roll!
