Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the differences between a human weapon system and a tactical athlete and what a human optimization program is. Furthermore, this book discusses and demonstrates how to put together a training program at an organizational level for the human weapon system. A systematic approach is presented and discussed, from initial analysis of the human weapon system to creating a multi-domain human performance optimization program. This book strives to familiarize the reader with the systematic approach that the author has utilized as an exercise physiologist in the Department of Defence over the past ten years. This book also explains how to utilize technology to individualize the human performance optimization program at an organizational level. The book discusses current technologies in power generation, measuring endurance, and nutrition, and also demonstrates to strength coaches and practitioners how to use these technologies and individualize optimization.

Book excerpt: This is a curated and comprehensive collection of the most important works covering matters related to national security, diplomacy, defense, war, strategy, and tactics. The collection spans centuries of thought and experience, and includes the latest analysis of international threats, both conventional and asymmetric. It also includes riveting first person accounts of historic battles and wars. Some of the books in this Series are reproductions of historical works preserved by some of the leading libraries in the world. As with any reproduction of a historical artifact, some of these books contain missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. We believe these books are essential to this collection and the study of war, and have therefore brought them back into print, despite these imperfections. We hope you enjoy the unmatched breadth and depth of this collection, from the historical to the just-published works.

Book excerpt: "A healthy and fit force is essential for our military to maintain its readiness posture and war-fighting capabilities. "The most important weapon system in the US military is people, and their health and fitness is the basic guarantor of military success at all levels of engagement" (AFDD 2-4.2, 2002, p. 23). Because our greatest resource is personnel, it is imperative that we prepare our members with the capabilities and skills needed to perform in a high stress environment. While the military has made significant strides within the realm of physical preparedness for service, it has not devoted as much attention to promote mental preparedness. Because the profession of arms is inherently stressful, we must adequately equip our members to not only survive, but also thrive within this environment. While each military service addresses and monitors physical fitness as a key component for combat readiness, psychological fitness has largely been undertrained and warrants attention (Thomas, Adler, Witels, Enne, & Johannes, 2004). The objective of this review is to examine the dynamic constructs of resiliency and hardiness as cornerstones for training and promoting mental preparedness in the military."--Abstract from web site.

Book excerpt: "At each stage in the development of a new weapon system appropriate action must be taken regarding the eventual role which men will play in operating and maintaining the completed system. The use of systematic procedures for solving problems and making decisions with respect to these human engineering factors, and for articulating them with other aspects of system development, assures that the weapon system emerges as a maximally effective man-machine system. This report is intended to suggest systematic procedures for the human engineering of developmental weapon systems. A brief discussion of man-machine systems and the role of human engineering in their design is followed by a design schedule. This schedule suggests at what points and in what ways human engineering should be accomplished. Following the design schedule, procedures that may be used to assess and solve human engineering problems are suggested. Finally, human capabilities and limitations are discussed from the point of view of the man as a system component."--Abstract.

I can't recommend it highly enough." —Bill Gates The era of autonomous weapons has arrived. Today around the globe, at least thirty nations have weapons that can search for and destroy enemy targets all on their own. Paul Scharre, a leading expert in next-generation warfare, describes these and other high tech weapons systems—from Israel’s Harpy drone to the American submarine-hunting robot ship Sea Hunter—and examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use. “A smart primer to what’s to come in warfare” (Bruce Schneier), Army of None engages military history, global policy, and cutting-edge science to explore the implications of giving weapons the freedom to make life and death decisions. A former soldier himself, Scharre argues that we must embrace technology where it can make war more precise and humane, but when the choice is life or death, there is no replacement for the human heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A methodology, the coordinated human resource technology (CHRT), was developed to quantify critical human resource, logistics, and cost factors throughout aircraft acquisition. Knowledge of these factors helps influence the selection of a system and support design approach. The factors quantified are manpower, training, technical documentation, and system ownership costs. Reliability and maintainability, both of which directly affect the foregoing, are also quantified. The CHRT methodology also implements an integrated approach to personnel, training, and technical documentation, and operates from a single, evolving consolidated data base. This report describes two parts of a three-part demonstration of CHRT application on an aircraft acquisition program. Parts 1 and 2, respectively, use conceptual and validation (prototype) phase data on avionics and landing gear systems of the Advanced Medium STOL Transport (AMST). The results are presented and evaluated for various design, personnel, training, and technical data alternatives. CHRT is demonstrated as an acquisition management tool which initiates the development of detailed logistic and cost data early in acquisition and provides data source continuity throughout acquisition. Part 3 of the demonstration will use data projected for the AMST minimum engineering development (MED) phase. This phase is similar to full-scale development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weapon systems have at least a material component and a human component. Evaluation of the operational effectiveness of weapon systems must fully involve both components. The evaluation situation must be tactically realistic, personnel who normally man the system should be used, and there should be an attempt to stress the participants. To accomplish these goals, adequate information and response loads must be provided participants, over-control should be avoided, and player and instrumentation personnel quality control should be assured. Suggestions are developed for simulating two-sided combat, the concept of nonreactive testing is introduced, and the role of incentives and rewards to motivate and control performance is discussed.
