Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenots in France and America, Vol. 1 of 2 The Memoir of the family of La Fontaine, pub lished in New York, and translated by one of the descendants, finds no corresponding memoir in this country. Yet there are enough records left to prove, that a similar noble spirit animated the Huguenots in America. From this most interesting manuscript, I have been permitted to extract the following pas sage not inserted in the printed edition. I give part of it in the old French, that the arduous work of the translator may be appreciated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doubtless one of the scarcest Huguenot studies and yet unquestionably a classic, Lee's "Huguenots in France and America" is essentially a history rather than a treatise on emigration or a list of names, with primary emphasis on the exposition of facts and notable events. It is an exhaustive account of the origins of the Huguenots in France, their persecution and their subsequent flight, embracing sketches of many leading contemporaries and an account of the Reformation of the church in Europe and kindred circumstances resulting in the rise of French Protestantism. Particularly close attention is given to the major events leading to the Huguenot dispersion to England, Holland, Germany, and America; namely, the St. Bartholomew Massacre (1572), the assassination of King Henry IV (1610), and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). An important section of nearly 100 pages is devoted to the Huguenots of America, with emphasis on the formidable Huguenot settlements at Oxford (Mass.), New Rochelle (N.Y.), New Paltz (N.Y.), Frenchtown (R.I.), and Jamestown (S.C.). The work further contains a "List of the Names of Huguenot Families in America," documenting the arrival in Boston of those families who later settled in Maine, New York, and Rhode Island; and the names of those who settled in the South, including the settlement on the Santee River in South Carolina.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Huguenot Emigration to America, Vol. 1 I have undertaken to narrate the coming of the perse outed Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces now comprehended within the United States. This movement and settlement took place principally at the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. But before that period, important emigrations had already occurred; emigrations to Acadia, or Nova Scotia, to Canada, to the French West Indies, and, by way of Holland, to the Dutch possession of New Netherland - now New York. And still earlier, the effort had been made by Coligny - unsuccessfully, indeed - to plant a colony and provide a retreat for the French Calvinists, first in Brazil, and afterward in Florida. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Rise of the Huguenots, Vol. 1 of 2 The period of about half a century with which these volumes are concerned may properly be regarded as the formative age of the Huguenots of France. It included the first planting of the reformed doctrines, and the steady growth of the Reformation in spite of obloquy and persecution, whether exercised under the forms of law or vented in lawless violence. It saw the gathering and the regular organization of the reformed communities, as well as their consolidation into one of the most orderly and zealous churches of the Protestant family. It witnessed the failure of the bloody legislation of three successive monarchs, and the equally abortive efforts of a fourth monarch to destroy the Huguenots, first with the sword and afterward with the dagger. At the close of this period the faith and resolution of the Huguenots had survived four sanguinary wars into which they had been driven by their implacable enemies. They were just entering upon a fifth war, under favorable auspices, for they had made it manifest to all men that their success depended less upon the lives of leaders, of whom they might be robbed by the hand of the assassin, than upon a conviction of the righteousness of their cause, which no sophistry of their opponents could dissipate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenot, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale of the French Protestants I will not trouble you or the public With any reasoning upon the general conduct of the story Why I suddenly changed the scene here, or flew off to another character there, why I gave but a glimpse of such a personage, or dwelt long and minutely upon another. I believe and trust that those Who read the work attentively will discover strong reasons for all such proceedings, and I am quite sure that much thought and care was bestowed on each step of the kind before it was taken. Your own good taste will decide whether I was right or wrong, and blame or approve, I know, what ever I might plead. The public will do so also and, as a general rule, I think it best to conceal, as far as possible, in all cases, the machinery of a composition of this kind, suffering the wheels to produce their effect without being publicly exhibited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huguenots and Henry of Navarre, Vol. 1 IN the History of the Rise of the Huguenots I attempted to trace the progress of the Protestant party in France from the feeble and obscure beginnings of the Reformation to the close of the reign of Charles the Ninth; when, by reason of heroic struggles, and of the fortitude wherewith persecution and treach ery had been endured, the Huguenots had gained an enviable place in the respect and admiration of Christendom. In the present work I have undertaken to portray the subsequent fort unes of the same valiant people, through a period not less critical and not less replete with varied and exciting incident, down to the formal recognition of their inalienable rights of conscience in a fundamental law of the kingdom, declared to be perpetual and irrevocable. As the Massacre of St. Bartholo mew's Day constituted the most thrilling occurrence related in the former volumes, so in the volumes now offered to the public the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes is the event toward which the action throughout tends, and in relation to which even transactions of little weight in themselves assume importance. A conflict persistently maintained in vindication of an essential principle of morals is always a noble subject of contemplation. But when the matter at issue is nothing less than the claim to.
