Book excerpt: The House Surrounded By Sugar Cane is about an astonishing farm house located in southern Louisiana. The farm consisted of eight acres of land, but the house and its beautiful landscaping occupied about an acre of that. The remainder was used for share-cropping. Adjacent to the land were the Plantation's sugar cane fields surrounding all of it. Those sugar cane fields were large and extended for miles. During the summer the sugar canes grew high above the house making it impossible to be seen. If it had not been for the tall trees on the farm, one would not have known that the house existed.

Book excerpt: Inhabiting the rainforest of the southwest Maracaibo Basin, split by the border between Colombia and Venezuela, the Barí have survived centuries of incursions. Anthropologist Roberto Lizarralde began studying the Barí in 1960, when he made the first modern peaceful contact with this previously unreceptive people; he was joined by anthropologist Stephen Beckerman in 1970. The Ecology of the Barí showcases the findings of their singular long-term study. Detailing the Barí’s relations with natural and social environments, this work presents quantitative subsistence data unmatched elsewhere in anthropological publications. The authors’ lengthy longitudinal fieldwork provided the rare opportunity to study a tribal people before, during, and after their aboriginal patterns of subsistence and reproduction were eroded by the modern world. Of particular interest is the book’s exploration of partible paternity—the widespread belief in lowland South America that a child can have more than one biological father. The study illustrates its quantitative findings with an in-depth biographical sketch of the remarkable life of an individual Barí woman and a history of Barí relations with outsiders, as well as a description of the rainforest environment that has informed all aspects of Barí history for the past five hundred years. Focusing on subsistence, defense, and reproduction, the chapters beautifully capture the Barí’s traditional culture and the loss represented by its substantial transformation over the past half-century.

Book excerpt: I wrote this fiction/romance novel depicting the struggles and accomplishments of slaves and free blacks in the late 1800 s and early 1900 s in Louisiana. The French Napoleonic laws in Louisiana in the 1800 s did not allow slaves nor free blacks to inherit property. My novel has romance between mixed couples and a suspenseful twist at the end. The novel depicts the discovering of oil underneath a sugar-cane plantation and how wealthy individuals and land barons try to steal property from a young mulatto woman who grew up on a sugar-cane plantation. After finding out about an affair her mother had with a white plantation owner she inherited the largest amount of land and plantations in Louisiana after her father passed away. As she was challenged in court by high powered, politically connected, wealthy land barons she discovered that her lawyer and the preceding judge on her case were on the side of the greedy land barons. After discovering missing legal documents and challenging the current French Napoleonic laws she prevailed in court and became one of the wealthiest female heroines of her time. I grew up in Los Angeles, Calif. in South Central with a family background in Louisiana. I have Bachelor of Science degree s in Sociology and History from Calif. State Unversity at Northridge in 1974. I now own a Consulting Company named Vanlock which consults with companies and makes deals around the globe from (1967-1989). I was recommended by former Calif. Govt. Gray Davis to a Beverly Hills Wall St. tycoon as his personal assistant for the last (22) years. I now owned a Consulting Company named Vanlock which consults with and makes deals around the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Garden District of New Orleans has enthralled residents and visitors alike since it arose in the 1830's with its stately white-columned Greek Revival mansions and double-galleried Italianate houses decorated with lacy cast iron. Photographer West Freeman evokes the romance of this elegant neighborhood with lovely images of private homes, dazzling gardens, and public structures. Author Jim Fraiser vividly details the historical significance and architectural styles of more than a hundred structures and chronicles both the political and cultural evolution of the neighborhood. The Garden District, unlike the French Quarter, evolved under the auspices of predominantly Anglo-American architects hired by newly arriving, and newly wealthy, Americans. Beyond these wealthy homeowners, the Garden District also offers a startlingly diverse and freewheeling history teeming with African American slaves, free men and women of color, French, Italians, Germans, Jews, and Irish, all of whom helped fashion it into one of America's first suburbs and most extraordinary neighborhoods. Fraiser animates the Garden District's story with such notables as Mark Twain; Jefferson Davis; occupying Union general Benjamin Butler; flamboyant steamboat captain Thomas Leathers; crusading Reverend Theodore Clapp; Confederate generals Jubal Early and Leonidas Polk; jazzmen Joe "King" Oliver and Nate "Kid" Ory; champion pugilist John L. Sullivan; local authors Grace King, George Washington Cable, and Anne Rice; Mayor Joseph Shakespeare; architects Henry Howard, Lewis Reynolds, and Thomas Sully; cotton magnate Henry S. Buckner; and Louisiana Lottery co-founder John A. Morris. In words and photographs, Fraiser and Freeman explore the unexpected evolution of this district and reveal how war, plagues, politics, religion, cultural conflict, and architectural innovation shaped the incomparable Garden District.
