Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The Household Guide to Dying comes a funny and moving account of life in the country. The Captain and his wife accidentally find themselves managing the Hotel Albatross. The Captain floats between the hotel's various bars: chatting to and chatting up customers, breaking up fights, and dealing calmly with the simmering tensions of a small town. His wife has her hands full with the day-to-day running of the hotel: mediating between family members fighting over wedding decorations, appeasing disgruntled staff members and dealing with the horror of what lies in room 101. She also dreams of getting out... Debra Adelaide has created a wonderfully poignant novel about hotel management and human nature. She weaves the eccentric cast of characters together beautifully with the politics of life in a small town to give the reader a sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking glimpse into what it would be like to live at the Hotel Albatross.

Download or read book Albatross written by Graham Barwell and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “At length did cross an Albatross, / Through the fog it came; / As if it had been a Christian soul, / We hailed it in God’s name.” The introduction of the albatross in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” remains one of the most well-known references to this majestic seabird in Western culture. In Albatross, Graham Barwell goes beyond Coleridge to examine the role the bird plays in the lives of a wide variety of peoples and societies, from the early views of north Atlantic mariners to modern encounters by writers, artists, and filmmakers. Exploring how the bird has been celebrated in proverbs, folk stories, art, and ceremonies, Barwell shows how people marvel at the way the albatross soars through the air, covering awe-inspiring distances with little effort thanks to its impressive wingspan. He surveys the many approaches people have taken to thinking about the albatross over the past two hundred years—from those who devoted their lives to these birds to those who hunted them for food and sport—and discusses its place in the human imagination. Concluding with a reflection on the bird’s changing significance in the modern world, Barwell considers threats to its continued existence and its prospects for the future. With one hundred illustrations from nature, film, and popular culture, Albatross is an absorbing look at these beautiful birds.

Download or read book Robbie written by Christine Jennings and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robbie Jennings came from Idle, an industrial village in Yorkshire; but he was never an idle man. His career was a ‘story of the unforeseeable, even improbable, advance to high position and worldwide reputation of a straightforward man of simple origins’ (from his entry in the ODNB by Sir Franklin Berman). Robbie achieved this eminence through academic success, experience abroad, service in military intelligence, years of teaching at Cambridge and the Inns of Court, and as counsel in major international border disputes. Included in this book are many passages of his own writings: his entertaining and perceptive observations on his travels, and many comments on legal problems. He is remembered by former pupils and colleagues from around the world for his wisdom, humanity and humour. His private passions were for the Lake District, for music, cricket and animals; and above all, for his family. Written by Robbie’s wife and close companion for half a century, this book provides for the general reader some idea of the scope and effectiveness of international law, with Robbie’s own comments on its continuous development.

Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Bad Girls, Good Women delivers an epic and adventurous love story set against the stunning backdrop of Antarctica. Alice Peel is a geologist. She believes in observation, measurement, and proof. But now, as she stands alone on the deck of a rickety Chilean ship, everything that lies ahead is mysterious and unpredictable. Six weeks earlier, her life at Oxford had been reassuringly comfortable. But when her relationship suddenly fell to pieces, she accepted a job that would take her to the end of the earth, joining the Kandahar Research Station in Antarctica. When she arrives, Alice discovers an ice-blue world lit by a midnight sun. Nothing has prepared her for the beauty of it—or the claustrophobia of a tiny base shared with eight men and one other woman. The isolation wipes out everyone’s past, and tension crackles in the air. One fellow researcher, James Rooker, is especially secretive. Yet Alice cannot deny the bolt of recognition between them. But Antarctica is a place of danger as well as beauty, and Alice is about to make a discovery that could change her life forever . . . if she survives. “Illuminating yet quietly revealing, Thomas’s latest is elevated by its unique setting and its strong characterization.” —Publishers Weekly

Download or read book The Flag and the Albatross written by Arnold Marsh and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Flag and The Albatross is the story of the last eight months in the life of the USS Regulus (AF-57), a life ended by Typhoon Rose in Hong Kong. It begins with the ship getting a new, possibly unqualified captain, and two minor events which some superstitious in the crew think portend a dark future. In the following months, the Regulus provides exemplary services to the ships operating off the coast of Vietnam in support of the war. By pure chance it also just misses encounters with two typhoons; lucky, yes, but the captain becomes complacent. As the Regulus nears the end of its six-month deployment, it is scheduled for an R & R visit to Hong Kong. Unfortunately, Typhoon Rose also plans to make a visit there at the same time. The initial storm tracks show Rose missing the city, but as time passes, the track keeps changing and the threat increases. Finally, it is clear that Rose will hit Hong Kong, but the captain refuses all recommendations to evacuate and the ship remains at anchor. On the night of August 21, 1971 Typhoon Rose slams into Hong Kong - one of the strongest storms ever to hit the city. Her eye passes directly over the Regulus, and 160 mph winds and 40 foot seas wreck the ship on an uninhabited island. The Flag and The Albatross tells the story of the months leading up to the shipwreck, events during the storm's encounter with the city and the ship, and what happens thereafter. The author was the Executive Officer (second in command) during this period.
