Book excerpt: Thomas Hosmer (ca.1603/1604-1687) emigrated from England to Newtown, Massachusetts in 1633, and moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1636. Descendants lived in New England, New York, Ohio and elsewhere. Some descendants immigrated to Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. The first volume of this study traces the Hosmer family from its English roots to its settlement in the New World, or from 1550 to about 1775. Volume 2 covers the period between the Revolutionary War and the Spanish-American War. Volume 3 covers a period roughly spanning 1880-1950.

In many cities across the world, particularly in Europe, old buildings form a prominent part of the built environment, and we often take it for granted that their contribution is intrinsically positive. How has that widely-shared belief come about, and is its continued general acceptance inevitable? Certainly, ancient structures have long been treated with care and reverence in many societies, including classical Rome and Greece. But only in modern Europe and America, in the last two centuries, has this care been elaborated and energised into a forceful, dynamic ideology: a ‘Conservation Movement’, infused with a sense of historical destiny and loss, that paradoxically shared many of the characteristics of Enlightenment modernity. This book reveals the means by which property-owning middle-class women achieved entry into the male-dominated sphere of urban planning. It suggests that women in California were not excluded from public life. Instead, they embraced the middle-class ideology of propertied self-interest and participated to the fullest extent possible in the urban struggle for regional dominance that shaped this period of western history. Likewise, as urban historians have presented this story as essentially male, this work suggests that although California's urban elite often maintained a division of labor along traditional gender lines, they clearly worked in a cross-gender alliance to shape a regional identity based on a commitment to urban growth.
