Book excerpt: Fifteen-year-old Charley Thompson wants a home; food on the table; a high school he can attend for more than part of a year; and some structure to his life. But as the son of a single father working at warehouses across the Pacific Northwest, he's been pretty much on his own for some time. Lean on Pete opens as he and his father arrive in Portland, Oregon and Charley takes a stables job, illegally, at the local race track. Once part of a vibrant racing network, Portland Meadows is now seemingly the last haven for washed up jockeys and knackered horses, but it's there that Charley meets Pete, an old horse who becomes his companion as he's forced to try to make his own way in the world. A portrait of a journey - populated by a vivid cast of characters against a harsh landscape - Lean on Pete is also the unforgettable story of a friendship and of hope in dark times.

Book excerpt: Born in Fayetteville, Tennessee in 1810, John Neely Bryan received an education and became a lawyer, dealt in real estate, became a north Texas pioneer, and the founder of Dallas, Texas. During his life he traveled across the southern part of the United States, from Florida to California. He lived for many years in Van Buren, Arkansas where he made a living as a lawyer and bought land. In the late 1830's he went to work at Holland Coffee's Trading Post on the Red River, and from there he moved to the uninhabited land that would become Dallas. He was the first non-Native American to permanently live in Dallas County, and for many months he was the only white person living there. In his travels and business dealings, he met and befriended many Native Americans and learned their languages. He married and had children. He lived to be an old man but his last years were difficult because he lost his sanity. He died in 1877 in the Texas Lunatic Asylum in Austin, Texas .His homestead would later be called Dealey Plaza and was close to where John F. Kennedy would later be killed.

Book excerpt: Willy Vlautin’s award-winning novel Lean on Pete, a moving and compassionate story about a fifteen-year old-boy's unlikely connection to a failing racehorse as he struggles to find a place to call home—now a major motion picture from A24, the studio behind Moonlight and Lady Bird, starring Charlie Plummer, Chloë Sevigny, with Travis Fimmel and Steve Buscemi, and directed by Andrew Haigh (45 Years, Looking). “Lean on Pete riveted me. Reading it, I was heartbroken and moved; enthralled and convinced. This is serious American literature.” — Cheryl Strayed, Oregonian Fifteen-year-old Charley Thompson wants a home, food on the table, and a high school he can attend for more than part of a year. But as the son of a single father working in warehouses across the Pacific Northwest, Charley's been pretty much on his own. When tragic events leave him homeless weeks after their move to Portland, Oregon, Charley seeks refuge in the tack room of a run-down horse track. Charley's only comforts are his friendship with a failing racehorse named Lean on Pete and a photograph of his only known relative. In an increasingly desperate circumstance, Charley will head east, hoping to find his aunt who had once lived a thousand miles away in Wyoming—but the journey to find her will be a perilous one. In Lean on Pete, Willy Vlautin reveals the lives and choices of American youth like Charley Thompson who were failed by those meant to protect them and who were never allowed the chance to just be a kid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel Julian and Other Stories was Bates's first collection following World War II, containing stories he wrote between 1941 and 1951. The title story 'Colonel Julian' sees an eighty-three-year-old veteran of service in India now hosting pilots in his mansion. Here the old generation meets the new. The Colonel is fond of a young pilot, but also bewildered: by his enthusiasm so different from his own business-like relationship with war, by his lack of perspective on his role in a larger military strategy, and by an apparent absence of ethics. 'The Bedfordshire Clanger' sees the welcome return of Uncle Silas after a ten year hiatus. Bates has Silas regaling his young nephew with a typical tall tale, this one involving a buxom landlady and disappointing meal with a pudding that is 'hard as a hog's back' called the Bedfordshire Clanger, but with a conclusion in which Silas, from then on, is 'never in want fur the nicest bit o' pudden in the world.' The collection also features bonus story 'For Valour', where the narrator, on a visit to an old airfield some years after the war, meets a café owner who shows him the medals she received after her pilot son was killed over Arnhem, and tells tales of countless soldiers, and now travellers, who continue to pass by.

Book excerpt: In this fourth volume of J.P.S. Brown's Arizona Saga series, the Cowden family continues its battle for grazing rights in Arizona Territory along the Mexican border. The family defends cattle country on the Santa Cruz river that the Apaches call The Enchanted Land in a war against an eastern syndicate that seeks to drive out all the region's original settlers. Through bribery, slave trading and heroin smuggling, the syndicate led by boss Duncan Vincent, increases its political influence and wealth and legitimizes a disciplined gang of thugs that calls itself the Arizona Rangers. The Cowden brothers have only their guns, fists, good horses, and good neighbors with which to defend themselves in the total range war that ensues. They separate during the battle and Les Cowden finds himself alone in the fight and in love with a girl who is one of his family's worst enemies.
