Book excerpt: Fifteen-year-old Charley Thompson wants a home; food on the table; a high school he can attend for more than part of a year; and some structure to his life. But as the son of a single father working at warehouses across the Pacific Northwest, he's been pretty much on his own for some time. Lean on Pete opens as he and his father arrive in Portland, Oregon and Charley takes a stables job, illegally, at the local race track. Once part of a vibrant racing network, Portland Meadows is now seemingly the last haven for washed up jockeys and knackered horses, but it's there that Charley meets Pete, an old horse who becomes his companion as he's forced to try to make his own way in the world. A portrait of a journey - populated by a vivid cast of characters against a harsh landscape - Lean on Pete is also the unforgettable story of a friendship and of hope in dark times.

Book excerpt: Born in Fayetteville, Tennessee in 1810, John Neely Bryan received an education and became a lawyer, dealt in real estate, became a north Texas pioneer, and the founder of Dallas, Texas. During his life he traveled across the southern part of the United States, from Florida to California. He lived for many years in Van Buren, Arkansas where he made a living as a lawyer and bought land. In the late 1830's he went to work at Holland Coffee's Trading Post on the Red River, and from there he moved to the uninhabited land that would become Dallas. He was the first non-Native American to permanently live in Dallas County, and for many months he was the only white person living there. In his travels and business dealings, he met and befriended many Native Americans and learned their languages. He married and had children. He lived to be an old man but his last years were difficult because he lost his sanity. He died in 1877 in the Texas Lunatic Asylum in Austin, Texas .His homestead would later be called Dealey Plaza and was close to where John F. Kennedy would later be killed.

As he recalls his childhood, the decadent indulgences of success, and a new discovery of life itself, Townshend re-creates in fiction a powerful personal odyssey from the inside out.

Book excerpt: A man before his time, Eldon MacCauley, after being wounded in a Civil War battle in which all his comrades are killed, is nursed back to health by a farmers adopted daughter. Although she confesses her love for him, he must flee the killing. On his way west, not only does he rescue a young, starving black boy from a tyrant master, but leads a wagon train of freed slaves to Texas to start a new life. Going against all conventions of the day, the young Scottish immigrant sees racial hatred as a terrible sin, and being a man of not only huge proportions, but also large ideas, through trials and tribulations he carves out a place for himself and his charges. Over many years, he never forgets the woman in West Virginia who saved his life and fell in love with him. One day, he must somehow repay her.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a career spanning six decades, Agnes Moorehead (1900-1974) was perhaps unique among 20th-century American actresses in making her name in four entertainment media--radio, theater, film and television--after age 40. Focusing on 25 of her most representative performances, this retrospective analyzes her work on radio serials like Mayor of the Town (1942-1949) and Suspense (1942-1962), her stage productions of Don Juan in Hell and Gigi, her television appearances on Bewitched and The Twilight Zone and her Emmy-winning appearance on The Wild Wild West. The author presents Moorehead's roles in the context of her personal life, discusses her relationship with directors, producers and other performers and provides little known facts about the productions.

Book excerpt: One-part lively oral history, one-part meticulously researched encyclopaedia, and one-part wild ride, Southern Hoofprints colorfully conveys the story of horse racing in Southern Alberta. And in so doing, it also becomes a fascinating history of the region itself, from the late 1880s through to the present day. From racing’s rough, Wild West beginnings to the vast grandstands of modern times, this regional history of the Sport of Kings has been deeply researched and is delivered in a unique and engaging fashion. With wry humour and occasional pulse-throbbing drama, the reader is treated to an intimate perspective on family traditions of husband and wife owners, the dynasties of multi-generational riders, the spectators, and even the horses themselves. The chronicle of the rise of women riders from the trivialized ‘powder puff’ races to becoming power players on the track, and that of the First Nations people from the early days through to today, make this a completely inclusive history. It tells a distinctly Canadian story and its focus on the Southern Alberta region allows it to paint the picture in vivid detail. With its historical data enriched and enlivened through the human dimension of the oral histories, Southern Hoofprints entertainingly recounts horse-racing’s triumphs, tragedies, and continual reinvention.
