Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Honey Bee The honey bee may well be counted as a friend of the human race, since besides furnishing large quantities of the most health ful sweet known, the commercial importance of which at this day is by no means insignificant, it is also of great value as a fertil izing agent to many of the crops produced by the farmer and horticulturist, obtaining results which could not otherwise be secured. Beekeeping on a commercial scale is far from being a royal road to wealth as pictured by some, but requires as much labor, diligence and attention to details as many other lines of business. However, the thorough going apiarist, well adapted and educated to the business, given a good location and a favorable season, usually has no complaint to offer. As along other agricultural lines, weather conditions often exert an adverse in uence and poor seasons intervene, which necessitate extra care, fortitude and enthusiasm on the part of the beekeeper, to safely bridge them over. Probably no other pursuit is calculated to bring one into intimate touch with nature at so many points as is beekeeping. To the gardener, the fruit-grower especially, bees are an absolute necessity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Honey Honey-Bee: Natural History, Physiology, an and Management The natural history and management of bees would probably occupy the attention of man at an early period. Surrounded by a boundless variety of living creatures, he would naturally be led to notice their habits and oeconomy; and no part of the animal world, or at any rate no part of the world of insects, would be more likely to engage his consideration than the honey-bee. Honey would, in all probability, constitute one of his earliest luxuries and as he advanced in civilization, he Would, as a matter of course. Nor will this be at the cost of what still remains to be learned. I shall pass over in silence the hoary traditions that, in the country and many a book, still constitute the legend of the hive. Whenever there be doubt, disagreement, hypothesis, when I arrive at the unknown, I shall declare it loyally; you will find that we often shall halt before the un known. Beyond the appreciable facts Of their life we know but little of the bees. And the closer our acquaintance becomes, the nearer is our ignorance brought to us of the depths of their real existence; but such ignorance is better than the other kind, which is uacon scious, and satisfied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Studies on the anatomy of the bee have not been lacking, for many good workers have taken up this subject for investigation. The popular demand for such information, however, has induced untrained men to write on the subject, and most accounts of bee anatomy contain numerous errors. This is probably to a greater extent true of the anatomy of the bee than of that of any other insect. Frequently the illustrations used by men not trained in anatomical work are more artistic than those usually found in papers on insect anatomy, and they consequently bear the superficial marks of careful work, but too often it is found that the details are in accurate. It has therefore seemed the right time for a new presenta tion of this subject based on careful work. The drawings given in the present paper are original, with the exception of figures 12, 54, and 55, and have been prepared with a thorough realization of the need of more accurate illustrations of the organs of the bee, especially of the internal organs. Mistakes will possibly be found, but the reader may be assured that all the parts drawn were seen. Most of the dissections, moreover, were verified by Dr. E. F. Phillips and Dr. J. A. Nelson, of this Bureau, before the drawings were made from them. An explanation of the abbreviations and lettering is given on pages 139 - 147. For the fourth time the author is called upon to revise his little book, and he still thinks that the leading object in offering it to public notice will best be explained in the words with which it was first introduced. "The existence of the following pages had its origin, some time ago, in the request of a friend, that the author would give him a brief practical compendium of the management of Bees, on the humane or depriving system.
