Book excerpt: This innovative anthology is the first comparative primary source collection of focus on France and the British Isles in a period critical to their development as great powers. It takes a fresh approach to the history of these two pre-industrial states, with the emphasis being on the regions and nations of which they were composed rather than the monolithic states.

Book excerpt: The Crisis of Courtesy examines the apparent decline of the courtesy-book in Britain after the 16th century and suggests that the matter of courtesy was disseminated into a broad range of literary genres such as poetry, the essay and the novel. The authors highlight the pervasive interest in conduct evinced in Georgian and Victorian literature. They show how it became an important source of inspiration for middle-class writers and artists who were eager to help their readers adapt to a changing society, but preferred to write in a humorous, satirical or imaginative vein rather than in a prescriptive manner. The book will be useful to the literary historian, as some major Augustan works such as those of Swift, Fielding and Hogarth are analysed from a new perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to write a history of the night? Evening's Empire is a fascinating study of the myriad ways in which early modern people understood, experienced, and transformed the night. Using diaries, letters, and legal records together with representations of the night in early modern religion, literature and art, Craig Koslofsky opens up an entirely new perspective on early modern Europe. He shows how princes, courtiers, burghers and common people 'nocturnalized' political expression, the public sphere and the use of daily time. Fear of the night was now mingled with improved opportunities for labour and leisure: the modern night was beginning to assume its characteristic shape. Evening's Empire takes the evocative history of the night into early modern politics, culture and society, revealing its importance to key themes from witchcraft, piety, and gender to colonization, race, and the Enlightenment.

Book excerpt: Traces the spread of the concept of conversation during the Enlightenment, including the project of politeness, the fine arts, philosophy and public opinion. The book narrates this triumph of conversational style and thought partly as a succession to the oratorical rhetoric that characterized the Renaissance and partly as the victory of the only mode of speech that recognized women as women, and not as imitation men. It also rewrites Jürgen Habermas' history of the public sphere as the history of rational conversation.

Book excerpt: This is the first book length study to examine Caroline theater as a space where the concerns of the English Roman Catholic community are staged. Rebecca Bailey juxtaposes a detailed analysis of Queen Henrietta Maria’s ground-breaking performances, which showcased to an elite audience her role as defender of English Catholics, against an exploration of how this community responded to such a startling vision, in particular through the politically charged texts of James Shirley and William Davenant. This engagement on the stage with the anxieties and hopes of the English Catholic community (properly contextualized within the wider and increasingly fragmented religious landscape in the years leading to civil war) opens up Caroline commercial theater as a site which energetically discussed the explosive religio-political topics of the cultural moment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Knack to Know an Honest Man: 1596 The following year a quarto duly appeared, published by Cuthbert Burby, but bearing the device, and no doubt printed at the press, of Thomas Scarlet. Of this copies are rare, and no other early edition is known. The present reprint is based upon a collation of the copies preserved in the Bodleian Library and the Dyce collection at South Kensington. Neither of these contains the first leaf, which was presumably blank (except, possibly, for a signature letter), while in both alike certain leaves are badly cropped in the margin, though in most instances the correct reading can be ascertained by a comparison of the two. The Dyce copy, which is a very poor one in every way, also wants two leaves of text, A4 and B4, which have been supplied by a modern reprint from the Bodleian copy. The quarto, in which the presswork is far better than the composition, is printed in roman type of a body resembling modern English (20 ll. = 94 mm.). On the title-page the play is vaguely described as having been 'fundrie times plaied about the Citie of London?
