This fascination is driven by the ancient chemical forces that first drew humans and animals together. It is also the same biology that transformed wolves into dogs and skittish horses into valiant comrades that would carry us into battle. Made for Each Other is the first book to explain how this chemistry of attraction and attachment flows through -- and between -- all mammals to create the profound emotional bonds humans and animals still feel today. Drawing on recent discoveries from neuroscience, evolutionary biology, behavioral psychology, archeology, as well as her own investigations, Meg Daley Olmert explains why the brain chemistry humans and animals trigger in each other also has a profound effect on our mental and physical well being. This lively and original investigation asks what happens when the bond is severed. If thousands of years of caring for animals infused us with a biology that shaped our hearts and minds, do we dare turn our back on it? Daley Olmert makes a compelling and scientific case for what our hearts have always known, that we were, and always will be, made for each other.

Book excerpt: All fifteen-year-old Katie Camilleri wants is the perfect first kiss from the perfect guy—and now he's just magically appeared in her bedroom, completely naked! When Katie and her best friend accidentally cook up a gorgeous teenage boy in the kitchen (seriously—he's like a long-lost Hemsworth brother), things are looking up for Katie and her plan to lock lips. But it turns out spontaneously creating a human being named Guy is slightly more complicated than Katie could have anticipated. Guy is wholly devoted to Katie but can't pin down why. Her high school classmates can't figure out what a hot guy like him is with her. And to make matters worse, her BFF isn't on board with this new romance. Plus, the longtime boy from next door is suddenly all kinds of moody. So is the "perfect" boy the right boy for Katie, after all? From the author of What I Like About Me comes a hilarious twist on the 1985 pop culture classic "Weird Science." Jenna Guillaume uses her signature humor and relatable voice to delight and also explore themes of body image, friendship, and supporting character asexuality.

Book excerpt: Domestic abuse is a national emergency: one in four Australian women has experienced violence from a man she was intimate with. But too often we ask the wrong question: why didn’t she leave? We should be asking: why did he do it? Investigative journalist Jess Hill puts perpetrators – and the systems that enable them – in the spotlight. See What You Made Me Do is a deep dive into the abuse so many women and children experience – abuse that is often reinforced by the justice system they trust to protect them. Critically, it shows that we can drastically reduce domestic violence – not in generations to come, but today. Combining forensic research with riveting storytelling, See What You Made Me Do radically rethinks how to confront the national crisis of fear and abuse in our homes. ‘A shattering book: clear-headed and meticulous, driving always at the truth’—Helen Garner ‘One Australian a week is dying as a result of domestic abuse. If that was terrorism, we’d have armed guards on every corner.’ —Jimmy Barnes ‘Confronting in its honesty this book challenges you to keep reading no matter how uncomfortable it is to face the profound rawness of people’s stories. Such a well written book and so well researched. See What You Made Me Do sheds new light on this complex issue that affects so many of us.’—Rosie Batty

Book excerpt: Have you ever said the wrong thing at the wrong time? Shaun has. Now his ex-wife, Lashelle, is missing and his best friend, Headache, is in a coma. Everything over the past seventy-two hours has traversed from a sanity state to full-blown chaos, and Shaun is at the root of it all. In his straightforward way, he composes a letter to Lashelle, explaining the sacrifices he had made during their marriage, including forsaking his illegitimate son. He closes his letter with hopes that Lashelle will one day get the opportunity to read it. Three days have passed and Lashelle is still missing. Shaun is frantic. She calls Yolanda, Kevyn’s wife in an attempt to let someone know of her whereabouts while maintaining her secret from Shaun. After revealing the details of her argument with Shaun, she learns that Yolanda is having an affair with Kevyn’s best friend, Headache; a man correctly nicknamed. Headache and Yolanda indulge in a “secret rendezvous” but are interrupted by a phone call from Tameika, Headache’s wife. Guilt-ridden, Yolanda gestures for Headache to stop, but he continues, erupting with an orgasmic residue as the condom broke. Yolanda visits Shaun at the hospital, where he works, wanting to speak in private about what has happened, but not before a furious Lashelle reappears and catches them in a compromising situation. Caught up in the moment, Shaun forgets about Lashelle’s disappearance, as he searches for an explanation for being behind a closed door with his friend’s wife. Yolanda reveals that she was raped by Headache and that she wants to press charges. Headache has been gone for the majority of the day and has missed yet another opportunity to spend quality time with his wife Tameika and their son, Keshawn. Just as he returns home, he is summoned for a meeting with Shaun to discuss Yolanda’s plan. Tameika, attempting to stress the importance of spending time with his family, becomes infuriated when Headache indicates that he is about to leave again. She asks for a divorce. Headache doesn’t come home; Tameika assumes he is off on one of his usual excursions. However, she receives a visit from the Sheriff’s department. Headache is in critical condition, a victim of a vehicular rollover. Emotionally torn, Tameika struggles with having to be supportive to a husband that she no longer loves. She calls upon his closest friends and family for support that she can no longer provide. While at the hospital, Tameika learns from Headache that he has had an affair with her best friend, Yolanda. A fight ensues and friends choose sides, severing the close network that once existed. The story ends with a twist as Shaun receives a letter from his illegitimate son. Bitter, his son dismisses the thought of a happy reunion between he and his father, exclaiming that Shaun need not be angered by his decision to not deal with him. He blames Shaun for making him the way that he is and vows not to be like his father, therefore repeating the vicious cycle that Shaun tried so hard to break.

This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “thought-provoking” one-volume distillation of the author’s powerful trilogy in praise of the middle class’s role in creating a better, and richer, world (Library Journal). The economist and historian Deirdre Nansen McCloskey has been best known recently for her Bourgeois Era trilogy, a vigorous defense, unrivaled in scope, of commercially tested betterment. Its massive volumes, The Bourgeois Virtues, Bourgeois Dignity, and Bourgeois Equality, solve Adam Smith’s puzzle of the nature and causes of the wealth of nations, and of the moral sentiments of modernity. The world got rich, she argues, not chiefly by material causes but by an idea and a sentiment, a new admiration for the middle class and its egalitarian liberalism. For readers looking for a distillation of McCloskey’s magisterial work, Leave Me Alone and I’ll Make You Rich is what you’ve been waiting for. In this lively volume, McCloskey and the economist and journalist Art Carden bring together the trilogy’s key ideas and its most provocative arguments. The rise of the west, and now the rest, is the story of the rise of ordinary people to a dignity and liberty inspiring them to have a go. The outcome was an explosion of innovation after 1800, and a rise of real income by an astounding 3,000 percent. The Great Enrichment, well beyond the conventional Industrial Revolution, did not, McCloskey and Carden show, come from the usual suspects, capital accumulation or class struggle. It came from the idea of economic liberty in Holland and the Anglosphere, then Sweden and Japan, then Italy and Israel and China and India, an idea that bids fair in the next few generations to raise up the wretched of the earth. The original shift to liberalism arose from 1517 to 1789 from theological and political revolutions in northwest Europe, upending ancient hierarchies. McCloskey and Carden contend further that liberalism and “innovism” made us better humans as well as richer ones. Not matter but ideas. Not corruption but improvement. Leave Me Alone and I’ll Make You Rich draws in entertaining fashion on history, economics, literature, philosophy, and popular culture, from growth theory to the Simpsons. It is the perfect introduction for a broad audience to McCloskey’s influential explanation of how we got rich. At a time when confidence in the economic system is under challenge, this book mounts an optimistic and persuasive defense of liberal innovism, and of the modern world it has wrought. Praise for the Bourgeois Era Trilogy “A contender for the great book of our age.” —The Times, Book of the Week “Persuasive . . . richly detailed and erudite.” —Financial Times
