Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Langstone Harbour Archaeological Survey Project was founded to undertake a detailed investigation of a large, shallow marine inlet on the southern coast of England. This volume outlines the results of work carried out between 1993 and 1998 when a broad range of inter-disciplinary investigative techniques were employed: fieldwalking, GPS survey, auger survey, limited excavations, underwater geophysical survey and excavation. A history of the physical development of the harbour as well as the populations that lived in the vicinity and exploited its resources, is given, from the earliest evidence in the Mesolithic and Neolithic, to the Bronze Age Urnfield cemetery, salt production in the Roman period, through to more recent changes and ecological and environmental threats to the survival of this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major phase of economic expansion occurred in southern England during the second and early first millennium BC, accompanied by a fundamental shift in regional power and wealth towards the eastern lowlands. This book offers a synthesis of available data on Bronze Age lowland field systems in England, including a gazetteer of sites. The research demonstrates the importance of large-scale animal husbandry in the mixed farming regimes as evidenced in the design of the field systems which incorporate droveways, stock proof fencing, watering holes, cow pens, sheep races and gateways for stockhandling. It is argued that the field systems represented a form of conspicuous production, an "intensification" of agrarian endeavour or a statement of intent, to be understood in relation to the maintenance, display and promotion of hierarchical social systems involved in exchange with their counterparts across the English Channel.

Book excerpt: Wessex -- the ancient counties of Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Berkshire -- is remarkable for its economic and social cohesion as a region, and for the extraordinary wealth of its ancient remains. In this authoritative survey, Barry Cunliffe sets the great monuments and famous sites in their full cultural context. His chief concern, however, is to interpret the landscape of the region, and the people who over so many centuries created it. In his hands it becomes an archaeological artefact as eloquent as Avebury and Stonehenge themselves.

Book excerpt: In recent years zooarchaeology has started to move beyond the purely economic towards social interpretations. In particular, these 'social' interpretations have often concentrated upon complete or partial animal burials rather than upon the disarticulated and fragmented faunal remains more commonly recovered from archaeological sites. This book presents a study of these associated bone groups from the Neolithic to late Medieval periods of southern England and Yorkshire. Not only does it present data on over 2000 deposits, it also discusses their interpretation, arguing that most are based on generalised period-based assumptions. It is proposed that a biographical approach to these types of deposit, allows the investigation of the specific above ground actions behind their creation, moving away from generalisations towards individual interpretations. The study shows the value of not only utilising specialist data, but integrating such knowledge with other archaeological evidence and theoretical approaches. The book is divided into three main sections. The first two chapters discuss the history of associated bone groups in the archaeological record and how they are created by human and natural actions. The second section consists of detailed chapters (three to nine) discussing the evidence from each region and period. The third section discusses trends in the data and the problems with how they are interpreted. It outlines and tests the use of a biographical approach and discusses the implications of these findings for wider research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound scientific knowledge is fundamental to the long-term planning and management of the Solent and its coastline. As such, it is appropriate to bring together in this book, the results and observations of various researchers, to establish the present level of understanding of the Solent System. These Proceedings incorporate scientific papers dealing with four different topics, covered over the two days of the Solent Science Conference: coastal processes; water quality and chemistry; biodiversity and conservation; and integrative Solent case studies. The papers are supplemented by a range of short contributions (presented originally as posters) which examine more specific pieces of research, and the findings of the Conference Workshops. Additionally, two maps have been included in the preface, showing the general location and main sites referenced. The present volume provides further recognition of the 'systems approach' to science and management, which attempts to integrate multidisciplinary science through interaction with various decision-making authorities. Given the increasing number of European Directives and the need for their implementation, it is vital that those who work in the Solent have the support of a strong scientific base.

Book excerpt: The zone where sea meets land is an ever-changing environment, which often reveals fascinating details of human occupation and exploitation of the landscape. This fragile historic environment also creates both research and management problems. The papers published in this book were given at a joint conference of the Nautical Archaeology Society and the Society for Landscape Studies. They review various aspects of and approaches to archaeological research in British coastal landscapes, bringing together research from two traditionally separate disciplines; terrestrial and maritime archaeology.
